Artist Corner: Emma Gerig
“Oh, just let me make another print! Almost ready.” Emma Gerig, a sophomore art major, hurries over to her desk to finish a new addition to her collection of hand-made greeting cards. Bending over a flat pane of glass, Gerig picks up a stamp tool and a folded piece of cardstock. Brushing some black paint onto the glass surface, Gerig presses the stamp first to the glass and then to the front of the cardstock. “It’s a carrot!” says Gerig, holding up the expertly crafted greeting card with a rustic illustration of a carrot stamped on its front. “This is...

Artist’s Corner: Ben Adams
One night while laying in bed on SST in China, Ben Adams had an idea. The next morning, he woke up and drew the sketch that would become his second tattoo. Adams had been thinking about getting another tattoo for a while. “I work on lots of ideas in my sketchbook,” he said. A junior art major with a focus on graphic design, he was inspired by the work of the artist who designed his first tattoo. “After that,” he said, “I thought, ‘I could do this myself.’” The sketch Adams did in China took about an hour to draw,...

Artist’s Corner: Tim Landes
Tim Landes, a junior art major, likes to make things, but the is interested in more than just producing art: his sculptures are an exercise in recycling and giving attention to the forgotten. “In sculpture, I work with what I find,” said Landes. “I focus on what is cast off and forgotten about by society and then combine and transform it into something new that is a composite of what I have found.” Landes’ interest in sculpture was fueled by a welding course he took at a community college in Albuquerque, N.M. during a year of service between high school...

Artist’s Corner: Anna Ruth, Emma Ruth, Lydia Yoder by Twila Albrecht
Emma Ruth, Anna Ruth and Lydia Yoder spent three hours this past Sunday in the art building, experimenting with a new style of 3-dimensional art. Emma Ruth, a sophomore sociology major, was inspired by the work of artist Alexa Meade, who paints on the body in order to transform a 3-D plane into a 2-D perception. Interested in trying the project for herself, Emma Ruth asked her sister, senior English major Anna Ruth, and Yoder, a junior environmental science major, if they would paint her using this technique. They began the process by painting a background for Emma to stand...

Artist’s Corner: Yoder practices Miksang contemplative photography
Josh Yoder had never owned a camera before this summer. In preparation for his fall S.S.T. in Peru, the sophomore environmental science major purchased a simple point and shoot, not only to document his experience but to pursue a spiritual discipline. Several years ago, Yoder learned about the Buddhist photography practice called “Miksang.” Translating to “good eye,” Miksang is a contemplative approach to photography with the goal of paying attention to simple, daily wonders.“I’ve never taken pictures before and am definitely not a gifted photographer,” Yoder said, “but this is a good way for me to be more in tune...

Artist Corner: Tasha Friesen
Tasha Friesen, a freshmen art major, sees beauty in the miniscule. Thanks to the zoom filters on her camera, Friesen is able to capture detailed photographs of everyday objects and nature in a style called macrophotography. The idea of macrophotography is to document only a fraction of a given subject matter in order to bring out the beauty in its entirety. Friesen began snapping photos of the miniscule only after learning more about camera operations in her Photo Communications class. “After taking Photo Comm, I feel like I know how to use my camera,” Friesen said. “I feel like I...

Artist Corner: Levi Smucker
“This is the biggest project in my life ever,” says Levi Smucker. Smucker, a junior music major from Akron, PA, will be participating in this year’s Concerto Aria—an impressive feat for a Goshen College musician. However, Smucker is taking an unusual approach: he composed the song with which he competed. “I’ve been writing music since middle school,” says Smucker. “Lots of piano and piano/cello stuff, and it just took off from there.” Smucker said that when you learn music and theory together, writing music comes naturally. Smucker adds that one Lent season, he gave up not writing one hymn a week....

Artist’s Corner: Phil Scott
If you’ve taken a look at the funnies page of any of the past Record issues this year, you’ve probably seen the work of artist Phil Scott. Scott, a sophomore art education major, says that he has always been interested in creating things. “I have always loved to make things: books, drawings, instruments,” he said. As far as his comics go, Scott explained, “Most of that is to make myself laugh, and if it makes others laugh that’s good too.” However, drawing and painting aren’t Scott’s only passions. “I like writing and making music more than 3-D art,” he said....

Artist’s Corner: Julz Quiroz
Julz Quiroz, queen of vintage-styled hats and red lipstick, has been dipping her fingers into many categories of art since fifth grade. “I go through art phases,” said the crafty R.A. of Yoder 4 North. “I don’t always have a favorite; it just depends on what I’m feeling at the time.” For Quiroz, any kind of art is a way of expression, whether it is poetry, fashion, painting or even doodling. “I have to be doing something while I’m in class,” she said. She displays her left arm, which is covered in a detailed design of a flower, turned into...

Artist’s Corner: Abi Tsigie
Photography: The highest form of art Starting out on a 35mm Zenith film camera, Abi Tsigie, an art and history double major, developed a love of photography several years ago. “It’s straight-up documentation,” he said, explaining his appreciation. “A philosopher said once that sculpture was the highest form of art because of its scale and likeness to reality. For me, today, that is photography.” Tsigie uses his skill with photography to capture certain aspects of human nature. Tsigie focuses his camera lens on people and, more specifically, on their faces. “I like people; I like eyes; I like faces and...

Artist Corner: Justine Maust
Justine Maust is usually the one pointing a lens and calling out, “Say cheese!” to her friends. Maust, a second-year art major from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, enjoys photographs of nature and people as a means of documenting normal life. “I just take pictures of whatever’s happening or looks beautiful at the moment. I like taking pictures in the ‘golden hour,’ when the sun is just about to rise or set,” she said. Maust’s interest in art started when she was young. Over the years, she has pursued it and excelled. Last year, she was featured in “Tolerance and the Other,” last...

Artist’s Corner – Abbie Miller
Abbie Miller seldom strays far from her Nikon D50. Miller, a third-year interdisciplinary Major from Wellman, Iowa, favors photography as her medium of choice due to its instinctual nature. “Photography doesn’t require finding an amazing scene,” she said. “Your eye knows what is interesting.” According to Miller, the photographer must consider a number of elements, mainly light, angle and structure, when setting up a shot. “You play with these effects and get a photo that only you would take,” Miller said. One such photo that represents Miller’s artistic touch was captured in response to this year’s Student Art Show theme...

Artist Corner – Devon Spitler
For Devon Spitler, art goes beyond paint on a canvas. “I like things that I can visualize, that I can put together in an aesthetically pleasing way,” she said. “For me, this includes ceramics and computer design, but I also find it in cooking, even putting together outfits.” Spitler, an art and PJCS double major from Wooster, Ohio, is beginning her second semester at Goshen after living in England for a year through Mennonite Mission Network. Her focus is design and aesthetics, though she hopes to someday combine her love of art and peace studies. “My dream for the future...

Artist’s Corner: Jess Sprunger
This summer, while most students spent their days taking online classes or waiting tables, Jess Sprunger, a second-year art major from Goshen, was in her garage, carefully sanding the corner edges of a wooden pizza peel. “I got the idea from my dad and brother, actually, after they made one for my mom at Christmas,” Sprunger said. With the help of her dad, the construction only took a few days. Sprunger joined multiple strips of scrap cherry wood to make a smooth, inclined surface, almost two feet in length. “I’ve already used it to make a few loaves of bread....
