Sara Method joins GC art department
Sara Method, the new art professor at Goshen College, got the first of her three degrees “at a small liberal arts college [sic] not unlike this one.” She has practiced and studied art throughout her life, growing up in Virginia before moving to North Carolina. “As a kid […] I would always ask people what I should draw on those long road trips we took as family […] and I stuck with it!” Method said, reflecting on what led to her becoming an art instructor. She has an extensive background in studio art and art history, having studied at Salem...

Kauffman revitalizes GC yearbook
For years, Leah Kauffman, a senior graphic design major, has wished that Goshen College had a yearbook. This year, she took it upon herself to create one. Goshen College published its first yearbook in 1915. For almost a century, yearbooks provided a record and history of the school. But after the 2012-13 school year, there was insufficient interest and funding to justify continuing the yearbook’s publication, so it was eventually phased out. Kauffman and friends had discussed bringing back the yearbook, but other ideas had always pushed it to the backburner. At the start of this year, that finally changed....

Senior art exhibit showcases student work
Senior art majors showed off their work to friends, family and community members at the first of two senior art shows on Sunday. The event was held in the Hershberger Art Gallery, where artwork by four students is on display. Exhibit One features the artwork of four seniors: Anna Smucker, Leah Kauffman, Andrew Bodden and Jacqueline Efigenio. Anna Smucker, a graphic design major, presented a zine booklet documenting her SST experience in the Southwest United States in the summer of 2021. The booklet is split into two parts, based in the Navajo and Hopi Reservations she visited. Smucker said the...

Outdoor art on campus: Worth a second look
Art is abundant at Goshen College. Galleries are located in Good Library, the music center and the Union Building. Much of the art on display, however, is located outside of these art-specific locations. Scattered throughout campus, works such as “Broken Shield” greet students and staff as they make their way through the day, popping up in surprising locations. What goes into purchasing, maintaining and rotating artwork located outside of specific art galleries? “The purchases happen in a variety of ways,” said Merrill Krabill, an art professor at Goshen. “Some of the work is donated.” “There’s also a collection of art...

New tattoos on campus, courtesy of Brandon Jiménez
Brandon Jiménez, a junior peace, justice and conflict studies major, has been fascinated with tattoos since his childhood. Recently, he has become Goshen College’s most sought-after tattoo artist. “I have always been super intrigued by tattoos,” said Jiménez. “Growing up, I always saw people with tattoos and thought they were super cool.” Katie Baer, a GC alum, taught Jiménez how to do stick and poke tattoos about a year ago. “She taught me how to do them, and it all started from there,” said Jiménez. “I started practicing on myself and on my friends. I just fell in love with...

GC (kinda) gets two snow days
Alena Miller, Contributing Writer There’s nothing better than waking up and realizing that you don’t have to go to school because it snowed. As a child I would spend my snow days sleeping in, reading books, cutting paper snowflakes and, most of all, playing in the snow. Unfortunately, the Internet has managed to infiltrate our days off from school, so this past Wednesday and Thursday were actually just normal class days on Zoom. Me and my friends, however, decided to make the best of our snowday-esque time. First we woke up and made blueberry pancakes. Next we went on a...

Photo essay: Creating, exhibiting, surviving
Over the last few years, I’ve been breathing, dreaming, eating and hearing art. The desire to make art keeps me up at night, and at times I even dream about it. For an art major, the senior art show is everything. It is the chance to show the entire world the artist that you are and the art you have created. One year ago I thought I had mine all figured out. I was wrong. Thoughts came rushing in, and I began to overthink. I had a mental block that lasted an entire semester. “This is not good enough, you...

GC grad’s dream becomes reality at DreamWorks
Many children have goals that seem impossible or hard to reach, but what happens when those dreams come true? Dianna Campos, who graduated from Goshen College last year, can answer that question. In December 2021, Campos announced she would be working as an Animation Production Intern for DreamWorks starting in Janunary, and that she was “over the moon” to begin her work. Campos is working on an unannounced project in the production process. “I am currently five weeks into my internship, and I honestly cannot believe how much I’ve been learning!” she said. Campos explained how her dream came to...

Greg Constantine continues visiting artist legacy
Many visitors come to the Music Center to attend performances in Sauder Concert Hall or Rieth Recital Hall, but another notable stop is the Hershberger Art Gallery. The gallery is currently featuring a collection of works by artist Greg Constantine. The exhibit will be open until March 13. Constantine is a visiting artist with the Eric Yake Kenagy Visiting Artist Program, a memorial for a student artist who attended Goshen College and passed away at the age of 20. The program has hosted visiting artists from around the globe since 1988, but the last artist featured by the program visited...

The Good Library is launching its first-ever Geek Off contest this year, with students, faculty and staff encouraged to express themselves creatively by submitting an artistic piece focused on one of their favorite fandoms. The deadline for submission is Feb. 4 and the winners will be announced a week later on Feb. 11. The top three winners will choose from a prize selection including a Nintendo Switch Lite, a VIP ticket to Elkhart County’s Comic-Con and a ThinkGeek collection box. “People have a lot of talent,” Kelsey McLane, the service specialist for Good Library, said. “We want to present it...

‘Voices in the Movement’ contest awards student artists
This Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Goshen College hosted the first annual King Celebration “Voices in the Movement” arts competition. Separated into multiple artistic categories, including writing or spoken word, film, music, and visual art, Goshen College students and Elkhart County High School students were asked to demonstrate high artistry while addressing themes embedded in Dr. King’s vision. Students were split into two tracks. The first, entitled “Descendants of Dr. King,” was a category created to highlight the experiences of students from the Black community. The second, entitled “Allies of Dr. King,” was for students outside of the Black community...

The annual student exhibit co-sponsored by the art department and the art club opened yesterday in the gallery in the basement of the library. The exhibit is entitled “Recycled,” and all artwork submited had to relate to this theme in someway. Students from watercolor, drawing, ceramics, sculpture and art and the sacred classes all submitted work. The exhibit will be open until March 5, and there will be a convocation on Jan. 19 during which students will speak about their work.

‘Voices in the Movement’
Each year in January, Goshen College honors the work and activism of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by taking the day off and hosting events. This year, they will be adding a new contest to the line-up of events. On Nov. 17, the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and the MLK Day Committee announced their upcoming art contest “Voices in the Movement.” The contest is open to Goshen College and high school students in the Elkhart area. Students must submit their work in one of two categories. “We have two tracks,” said Jessica Lala, assistant professor of social...

Cindy Cooper’s ceramic coral reef
On Nov. 7, local artist and retired art teacher Cindy Cooper presented her coral reef-inspired pottery in the Hershberger Art Gallery in the Music Center. Cooper has been a professional artist for many years and has a wide range of experience, from winning awards to being founder of the Goshen Clay Artists Guild. After serving as an educator at Goshen High School, she shifted her attention to creating pottery. The art exhibition, entitled One Piece at a Time, stems from Cooper’s passion and dedication for ocean preservation. “It is painful to see what man has ignorantly done to harm the...
