R.F.C. provides a workout experience for all levels and schedules
The sounds of Latin music permeate the Union Gym on Monday and Wednesday evenings as students and community members come together to work out through dance. Sophomore Austin Van, a regular Zumba attender, said that she enjoys the class because it has “a spicier type of dancing with good music.” Though they were held in the Recreation-Fitness Center last year, Zumba classes are now in the Union Gym where the space is larger and there is a better floor and improved air flow. Zumba classes are only one of the programs the R.F.C. offers students. There are a variety of...

Solar-paneled system to heat water in RFC
In a month’s time, the Recreation-Fitness Center will be the first building on Goshen College Campus to use solar-powered water heating. Faculty advisors John Buschert and Glenn Gilbert had, for several years, pondered utilizing solar-powered energy on campus. But it was not until last year that the plan began to take shape. And that shape was tubular. Rows of 25 tubes will lie parallel to make up eight 7-foot solar panel racks that will power the RFC’s daily hot-water use. A layer of glass surrounds a smaller tube that has a special coating that collects heat from the sun. The...

Price of RFC pool upkeep raises questions
A rumor circulating that the Recreational Fitness Center’s pool will be closing down next year has been confirmed to be just what it started as: a rumor. “There are no plans to close the pool,” verified Bill Born, Vice President of Student Life. Students and community members may have heard rumors of the pool’s financial instability since conversation regarding the issue began last spring. But swimmers can be assured that the pool will remain open at this point. However, the financial implications of the pool’s upkeep will continue to be heavily considered by the President’s council. The pool currently costs...

Embracing dancing, embracing Zumba
Zumba, the heart pumping, music infused, cardio workout dance class has entered the doors of the RFC. On Wednesday and Friday evenings from 8 to 9 p.m., college students and community members gather for one hour to tone and sculpt their bodies with Latin rhythms and choreographed dance moves. “I think a large number of the female population on campus has experienced Zumba now,” said Josh Keister, director of the Recreation and Fitness Center. Keister counted 100 plus participants in the first Zumba class several weeks ago, eighty-five percent of which he estimated as college female college students. Prior to...

CITL scores goals for the future
Students associated with the Center for Intercultural Teaching and Learning woke up early on Saturday to host "Goals for the Future," an event that attracted around 82 high school students. Twenty CITL students, 22 other Goshen College volunteers and three parents helped out with the event. According to Rebecca Hernandez, CITL project director, "The purpose of the event was to have current CITL students practice leadership skills through planning and execute an event, [and] bring high school students to learn more about how to get to college." The main event of the day for high school students was a soccer...

Clearing up solar domestic hot water
Letter to the editor In the last year or so, the Record has published two articles about the proposed Recreation-Fitness Center solar hot water project. These articles have done a great job at presenting the concept, but have not been very descriptive of some of the issues involved. The project started about a year and a half ago, when we learned that Indiana offers a matching grant of up to $25,000 for the installation of a solar domestic water heater (there have yet to be any takers for this money). Domestic hot water is the stuff you shower in. The...

Group hopes to shower RFC with sun
In a collaborative effort to continue the push for solar powered showers in the Recreation-Fitness Center, a group of students led by John Ross Buschert, professor of physics, met in the basement of Schrock science building on Tuesday. It was the second official meeting for the solar sunshower collective. According to Buschert, there is hope for the solar powered showers. “We’re deep into the details of the design,” said Buschert after he announced that the preliminary proposal for the showers passed the approval of the college's ecological stewardship committee. The next step is for the group to submit their official...

Don’t be bored Friday! Events fill ‘Night at RFC’
Students won’t be sleeping at the Friday evening “Night at the RFC." But they will have a chance to win pillowcases and blankets made from old extra-large Goshen T-shirts. Hosted by Residence Life, CAC, the RFC and Sodexo, events begin at 10 p.m. and include a range of activities. In addition to the T-shirt pillowcases and blankets, other prizes include two free pizzas and gift cards to Subway, Java Junction and iTunes. In the gym, the basketball teams and volleyball team will help organize pick-up games. Additionally, Yoder residence assistants will lead “yard games.” Racquetball courts will be converted into...
