Jeremy Corson: Westlawn’s Top Chef
We all know him: Jeremy Corson, the man in charge at our neighborhood Westlawn Dining Hall, or perhaps better known to most as “The Rott.” Occasionally he is the friendly face who greets you and takes your ID as you enter Westlawn, or maybe the person captaining the most high-tech golf cart you’ve seen on campus. In any case, many are not familiar with just who Jeremy is. Corson’s interest in becoming a chef was first peaked as a junior in high school, 1986 to be exact. “At that time I knew I liked to eat and enjoyed being in...

EcoPAX hosts Food Week
This week, the EcoPAX club has put together numerous events to celebrate Goshen’s first ever Food Week, including presentations, volunteer opportunities, and conversations about food. Hannah Yoder, a sophomore leader of EcoPAX and an organizer of the week explained that Food Week is a week where “we are focusing on themes of food justice, food waste and packaging, food production, food deserts and scarcity, and food in community.” By hosting these events, EcoPax is hoping to encourage discussion on campus about global problems surrounding food. In order to allow time for discussion on campus, planners of the events decided to...

Eco-PAX Encourages Community, Sustainability
The Eco-PAX Club hosted 25 students who shared “stone soup.” Stone Soup is an event that promotes a strong sense of community and fellowship. Each person who attends the event brings an ingredient, and the various offerings are thrown into a pot. The participants enjoy the resulting soup. “At the beginning we had some lofty goals of actually making the soup in a large cauldron, which we did attempt, but we just took it into the kitchen—and now we carry on with that tradition,” Joanna Epp, a junior, said. Eco-PAX is a student-led group–the leaders for the 2014-15 year are...

‘Grab-N-Go’ Debuts At Westlawn
AVI Fresh Dining Services have implemented a new takeout option this year. The new program, called “grab-n-go,” is convenient for people needing a quick meal between classes or off-campus students. “Grab-n-go” begins with customers obtaining an eco-friendly container at the main cashier that they can take to the salad bar. Main greens include fresh spinach, romaine and iceberg lettuce, an assortment of vegetable and other salad toppings are also available with a variety of homemade dressings. The container is then weighed at the main cashier for 47 cents per ounce. Students with a meal plan cannot use this option for...

Sweet Life: Graduate of Milton Hershey School Opens Shop in Goshen
After a series of twists and turns on the road, the Old Bag Factory came into my view near the outskirts of Goshen. I took my first steps on the mismatched red brick path and turned left to enter the old factory building. Multiple signs with arrows guided my way to my destination; at the end of the hallway, the Olde Country Confections Chocolate Factory greeted me with a sweet smell. Stepping in, my senses were in heaven. With a brown Hershey’s cap on his head, Daniel Robert Spence, the owner of the Olde Country Confection Chocolate Factory, gave me...

Family Matters; One Woman’s Unique Experience with AVI Fresh
When we think of the food service industry, family is not the first word that comes to mind. But for Jodi Kuhlman, who works and greets students and faculty with a friendly smile as they enter the Leaf Raker, family is what her job is all about. Kuhlman began her work here at Goshen College three years ago when the college decided to make the switch to the AVI Fresh food service. During this transition, her fiancé and her son began working with AVI as well. But what makes Kuhlman’s story unique is the opportunity she had to work with...

AVI and student senate partnership caters to vegetarians
This semester AVI took initiative in starting conversation with students. Previously, students could express concerns and recommendations via comment cards, but now AVI would like to engage in face-to-face conversation with those they serve. Garret Tyk, resident director of AVI, will meet periodically with a Student Senate committee made up of Karsten Hess, Elizabeth Derstine and Ellen Conrad. “[Tyk] approached us asking if we could get a few people from student senate to gather students and maybe have a meeting with him or someone else from AVI at least once a month,” said Hess. During the first meeting, two students,...

Honey’s scoops up sweet business
Two years ago, Kelly Huffman and her husband traveled down to Columbus, Miss. for a family vacation. While in the city, the couple stopped by Smackers, a local frozen yogurt shop. The atmosphere was like nothing the Huffmans had ever experienced. “The yogurt itself was tasty, made with real fruit, peanut butter and cookies,” Huffman said. The toppings – M&M’s, gum drops, gummy worms, kiwi, mangos and countless other options – were displayed in such a way that allowed children to have fun while looking through the different kinds of goodies. The adults were able to appreciate the aesthetic beauty...

Making peace with dandelions
This spring, GC students are setting out on a campus-wide dandelion harvest to be served at a dandelion themed meal. Spring finally graced Northern Indiana with its presence this week, bringing one very important thing with it: dandelions. The dandelion, a traditional foe of lawnkeepers the world over, has been cast aside as a weed and a menace by many. The idea, pioneered by Jon Mark, a senior EcoPax member, and aided by EcoPax, is a new one for GC. According to Mark, there were several reasons behind this initiative. First, many people do not recognize the nutritional benefits of...

Restaurant review: Los Primos
Most everyone would agree that for college students, the price of the food matters as much as the taste. How fortunate, then, that a restaurant in Goshen offers food that is both inexpensive and delicious. As a cash-strapped college student working at nearby Camp Friedenswald last summer, I found myself with a carload of hungry counselors who were looking for something other than chicken strips and macaroni. As we neared Los Primos, we were a little concerned. The restaurant didn’t look like much more than an apartment building converted to business, and we had to squeeze our way through the...

The Brew to move off Main Street
Myron Bontrager is “selling the old farmhouse.” That’s how he describes his latest decision as owner of The Electric Brew, located in downtown Goshen. This summer, Bontrager will move The Brew one half block, from 136 South Main St. to 118 East Washington St., to the building in which Better World Books is currently located. Meanwhile, Better World Books will move to 215 South Main St., a building that Town and Country Appliance is vacating. Bontrager’s “farmhouse” has offered coffee, live music and a gathering space to the Goshen community for the last 17 years. During events like First Fridays,...

What happens to our leftover meals?
Goshen College students were barred last semester from donating leftover dining hall meals to the homeless. Since then, some students are left wondering what they can do with their unused meals at the end of the semester. “Since I lived in campus housing, I had to have 80 meals,” said Jenae Rupp, a senior nursing student who wanted to donate her unused meals last December. Rupp, along with seniors Saralyn Murray and Jan Zawadzki, facilitated a Facebook group with the intention of enabling students across campus to donate their unused meals. “I figured those [meals] were ‘mine,’ to use as...
