Futsal scores community goals
From Adidas cleats to Vans slip-ons, all shoes are welcome on the futsal turf. All players are welcome, too, from Goshen College athletes to high school students and community members who love the game. With outdoor soccer fields under a layer of snow, the turf room in the GC Recreation-Fitness Center has become a gathering spot for soccer enthusiasts. “We are really trying to invite literally everyone to come play,” said Cormac Koop Liechty, a first-year who is one of the lead organizers for the group. “We know that it’s a lot of fun, and the amount of fun doesn’t...

Fall sports wrap, soccer and XC continue
As we welcome November and decreasing temperatures, fall sports at Goshen College have begun to come to a close. However, the women’s soccer team and the men’s and women’s cross country teams are the last ones standing for the Maple Leafs. The women’s soccer team was able to clinch a Crossroads League tournament spot with their 3-0 shutout win against Huntington on Tuesday afternoon. Head coach Justin Crew said, “It’s been an up and down season, we have had some highs and some lows, however, I believe we continue to move in the right direction as a program.” This is...

Students and faculty compete in new Fantasy Premier League
Philipp Gollner, associate professor of history, began watching soccer as a boy in Austria. Today, he is dominating the sport ‒ not on the pitch, but in the Goshen College Fantasy Premier League (FPL). Gollner is competing against 25 students, faculty and staff in the college’s first FPL. As of this week, Gollner is in first place with 504 points; Brian Yoder Schlabach is in second, with 474; and Andy Bennett trails in third, with 425 points. Students, faculty and staff were invited to sign up for the FPL through a link that was sent in the communicator earlier this...

Athletic department searches for a new mascot
Goshen College is beginning the process of creating a new mascot to pump up the fans during sporting events. On Monday, Sept. 20, a committee comprised of faculty, community members, students and alumni sat down to start thinking about the mascot that a costumed student will impersonate to represent the campus. Erica Albertin, athletic director and head of the committee, said, “Historically there have been some mascots off and on, but there hasn’t been one that stuck. I would love to have one for a long time moving forward.” Goshen College’s history with mascots has mostly consisted of students dressing...

Intramural sports bring students together
Nearly every week, large groups of Goshen College students gather in the Recreation Fitness-Center, on the sand volleyball courts, or at the KMY lawn to partake in intramural sporting events and tournaments. To start the semester, students formulated teams and played in the annual sand volleyball league and tournament. Likewise, an outdoor soccer tournament was held this past weekend. According to Chad Coleman who works in Student Life and has managed all intramural sports on campus since 2009, intramurals create a great sense of community and camaraderie amongst students. “Intramurals provide a competitive, yet fun, inclusive environment for students, particularly...

Disc Golf comes to Goshen
The sport of disc golf has exploded since the start of the pandemic, with new courses popping up across the country. This summer, the city of Goshen jumped on the bandwagon. Mullet Park, a short walk through the woods from the better-known Shanklin Park, became the first disc golf course in the city of Goshen in July when a full nine-hole course was installed. A local father and son-in-law combo are responsible for bringing the game to Goshen. Stuart Meade and his son-in-law Kevin Hinkle, got into the game three years ago. After visiting courses around Northern Indiana, the pair...

Cole, Jr., Phillip Miller and Kevicia A. Brown are also in consideration for the position. Each candidate was invited to campus to participate in a day and a half interview as a part of their evaluation process. The interviews will be conducted through Mar. 30. Goshen College updates fan policy
After nearly a year of bad news, cancellations and postponed seasons, good news has finally broken through, just as spring athletic sports begin the home stretch of the season. On Mar. 9, a change in the Goshen College spectator policy for the 2021 spring season was made. The GC athletic department discussed and came to an agreement with the GC Pandemic Task Force, announcing Tuesday new rules for outdoor sporting events. The shift has been made as all Goshen College students and faculty currently have access to events at the Ingold Athletic Complex and Gunden Gymnasium. GC athletes will now...

The chants have returned
Goshen College athletics come with a very supportive fan base. Not being able to support players for the last three months has been hard on many members of the community. Recently however, there seems to be a sign of hope for fans who are eager to return to the stands. The spectator policy implemented on Sept. 4 underwent significant shifts: from allowing a small number of fans, to allowing players two family members each, then canceling all attendees altogether. This policy has been amended once again, now permitting athletes four complimentary tickets through a pass list at the gate to...

When will the chants return?
For nearly a year now, COVID-19 has ravaged its way across the U.S., cancelling event after event, and the world of sports is no exception to the changes brought on. Loyal alumni, the always-proud student section and families of the players can now only watch the Maple Leafs play from a digital standpoint — online at goleafs.net or over the airwaves on 91.1 The Globe. When the Goshen College spectator policy was first released, 100 seats were made available for spectators for indoor events, a number that fell to zero on Nov. 16 when the spectator policy was amended due...

Tai Chi: a morning routine fit for the president
The dreaded sound of an alarm goes off before the birds are even awake. Most would hit snooze and try to get a few more minutes of sleep before starting their day. But that’s not the case for Goshen College President Rebecca Stoltzfus. “I honestly roll out of bed in a good mood because I like this part of my day so much,” Stoltzfus said. “It’s one of my favorite times of the day.” President Stoltzfus had always wanted to create a better morning routine for herself so she did just that. The structure of her mornings are simple: brew...

A season of losses for fall sports
The Goshen College fall sports season was filled with ups and downs as the uncertainty of COVID-19 loomed over the teams. Thirteen games across the Goshen College athletic department were cancelled during the fall season and two teams ended with a winless season. The Goshen College men’s soccer team was the first team hit with the coronavirus back in early August, only impacting their practice schedule as the team was still ready and able to compete in game one of their season. However, the team was hit with an outbreak in the middle of their season. This forced the team...

Without RFC: How are students working out?
When the Recreation-Fitness Center closed for additional COVID-19 housing last week, members of the Goshen College campus were forced to find new ways to continue exercising. Some had already made adjustments when COVID-19 first hit. Kyle Hufford, associate professor of communication, used to go to the RFC four to five hours a week. Since March, that number has dropped down to one to two hours. Hufford alternated between cardio, such as the “rowing machine, elliptical and using the weight room,” he said. Hufford often worked out on weekdays when he had night classes. “But I really haven’t been super comfortable...
