Cold shooting keeps GC women from win column
The shooting woes continued for the Goshen College women’s basketball team as they fell in a low scoring 44-39 affair to Aquinas College Tuesday evening at Gunden Gymnasium. Neither team was able to find their stride throughout the peculiar offensive-struggle as each team finished the night with an identical amount of field goals made. Goshen (0-2) finished just above the Mendoza line as the Leafs tallied a meager 21.9 percent (14-for-64) clip compared to Aquinas’ (2-0) 25.9 percent (14-for-54) mark. The disparity in the final score came by way of the charity-stripe in favor of the visitors as the Saints...

Basketball seasons come to a close at Marian
Alyson Prigge, a first-year, scored a career high 17 points and grabbed nine rebounds Tuesday evening as the Goshen College women’s basketball team fell to fourth-ranked Marian University 82-54 in the first round of the Crossroads League Tournament. Three days removed from an 86-51 defeat at the hands of the same Marian team, the injury stricken and short-handed Maple Leafs simply could not crack the defending NAIA National Champions and No. 1 seed in this year’s CL Tournament. It was an eerily similar story for the Leafs as they failed to knock down shots and struggled to take care of...

Fast start not enough for Leafs
Sophia Sears, a senior, scored 14 points in her return to the lineup, but the Goshen College women’s basketball team stumbled after a strong first quarter, falling to the visiting Trojans of Taylor University 72-55 Saturday afternoon on Senior Day. Gabby Williams, a senior, and Lynnia Noel, a senior, each recorded double digit performances with 12 and 10 points respectively with Williams recording a team-high eight rebounds. Fellow seniors Calla Bartlett, Kelsey Fraley and Angela McLean also recorded points in their final home game. Despite leading 11-10 after the first quarter, the Leafs were outscored in each of the last three quarters as Bethel pulled away. Leafs suffer loss to Indiana Wesleyan
The Goshen College women’s basketball team was unable to overcome a slow start Wednesday night, eventually falling on the road to Indiana Wesleyan University 60-32. The Maple Leafs were held without a field goal through most of the first half before Gabby Williams, a senior, recorded Goshen’s first basket from the field. Goshen was only able to muster 10 first half points and IWU took a 29-10 lead into the halftime break. Despite a better offensive output in the second half, the Maple Leafs ended the game with a 18.52 shooting percentage from the floor. The Wildcats were able to...

Sears, Noel recognized for 1,000 career points run
Every great team has prolific scorers and the Goshen College women’s basketball team is no exception. Senior guards Sophia Sears and Lynnia Noel recently became the 15th and 16th Maple Leafs to reach 1,000 career points and were honored on the evening of Jan. 11 in Gunden Gymnasium. The ceremony took place at halftime of Goshen’s 57-37 win against Mount Vernon Nazarene University. A native of Fort Wayne, Indiana, Noel is touted as the team’s sharpshooter. She currently leads the Leafs in three-point scoring by converting on 27 of her 77 attempted shots from beyond the arc. Noel currently stands...

The Leafs were able to outscore Taylor in each of the first two quarters to take a 33-22 lead into the half. Tyra Carver: the new assistant coach at Louisburg College
After helping the Goshen College women’s basketball team make it to the NAIA Fab Four, Tyra Carver graduated in May and headed south for a coaching job in North Carolina in the midst of Hurricane Matthew. After the 12-hour drive, Carver arrived in Louisburg to heavy rain and strong winds. The next day, there was no electricity. On top of that, the residents were ordered to stay inside their homes due to the weather emergency. Several days later, the weather cleared, and Carver was able to start settling into her new home and city. After graduating with a broadcasting major...

The O’Neal sisters join the Maple Leaf squad
Twin sisters, Carley and Caitlyn O’Neal are junior transfer students who both play basketball for Goshen College. Carley is an exercise science major, while Caitlyn is an art major with a minor in marketing. Carley and Caitlyn had initially visited Goshen as juniors in high school for softball. While visiting, Stephanie Miller, head coach, heard that they also played basketball and met with them. They’ve kept in touch ever since. “We really hit it off,” said Carley. “She was the very first collegiate coach to be interested in us as a ‘package’ for basketball. And that relationship held a special...

Lynnia Noel led all scorers with 24 points and was one of five Maple Leafs to hit double digits as the Goshen College women’s basketball team played to an 89-81 victory over the Cincinnati Christian University Eagles Saturday afternoon. Noel was electric from the start, scoring eight points and dishing out four assists to lead the Maple Leafs in the first 10 minutes of action. However, it was the Eagles (2-6) taking a 30-27 lead into the first break. After a combined 57 points in the first stanza, struggles from the floor rendered a much lower scoring second quarter. Goshen...

Lynnia Noel tallied 25 points and Sophia Sears added 10 assists as the Goshen College women’s basketball team played to an 84-77 victory over the Brescia University Bearcats Friday afternoon. Gabby Williams returned to the starting lineup after missing the first two games of the season, and her impact was felt immediately, as the 6’1 senior scored the first bucket to give Goshen the early lead. However, it was Bearcat Kelsey Kirkpatrick who stole the show in the first stanza, knocking down four shots and a pair of free throws for 12 of Brescia’s 22 first quarter points. With a...

A letter to Leaf Nation
I want to talk to you all about a basketball game: shocker, right? Though this time there was no buzzer beater, no national coverage and no post game accolades. I was a freshman and it was the last home game of the season. As an underclassman you want nothing more than to send your seniors out on a high note, but after compiling a 3-26 record prior to this game, we weren’t expecting to play in front of anything more than a meager crowd. However looking back, meager is a word I will never use to describe any Goshen crowd...
