Mohamed joins Leafs from Poland
The odds of Syanne Mohamed, a 21-year-old Polish basketball player, landing in Goshen were very unlikely. And yet, here she is, a center for the Maple Leafs, standing at 6 feet, 3 inches in the Gunden Gymnasium. Syanne Mohamed was born in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe before moving to the United States at age 2 when her family relocated to New Hampshire. At age 9, Mohamed moved to Poland, where her grandmother introduced her to league basketball. She began playing for the Baystate Jaguars. When it came to her college decision, Mohamed chose Goshen for two reasons: the small class sizes and...

Men’s and women’s basketball preview
The Maple Leaf Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams both tipped off their 2021-2022 season against Andrews University this week. The men’s team has added three freshmen and three transfers to their roster after finishing 3-24 a season ago. Despite the young group, Head Coach Jon Tropf feels that his team is prepared for what’s to come. “We have given these guys a lot and have been very demanding but we have grown a lot over the preseason, and I expect to continue to see improvement every day,” Tropf said. “We will play better basketball as the year goes on.” Their...

GC basketball represented in all-conference awards
On Wednesday, Crossroads League officials announced the 2020-2021 men’s and women’s basketball all-conference selections. Women bound for conference tournament
For the first time since 2017, the Goshen College women’s basketball team will compete in the Crossroads League tournament, securing the seventh seed with just one game remaining on the season. For the three seniors on the team, it will be their first conference tournament appearance. “We’re all pretty pumped,” said Claire Rauck, senior guard. “ I think we have the ability to beat anyone on any given night, and we really do just have to play like there’s nothing to lose.” Despite the conference tournament bid, the team wasn’t quite satisfied with how the regular season played out. “All...

Getting on the same page
For the Goshen College women’s basketball team, confidence and poise under pressure is key. Faced with a confidence issue mid-way through the winter-break, head coach Stephanie Miller decided that it was high time that her squad broke through some of their mental blockages. Instead of drilling complex schemes and strategies over and over, coach Miller began the confidence-rebuilding process off of the court by having the team, as well as the staff, read a self-improvement book entitled, It’s a Mental Thing: Five Keys to Improving Performance and Enjoying Sport. “We broke it up, did a few chapters at a time,...

No timeout for sports
Despite a combined eight canceled games over the holiday break between the men’s and women’s basketball teams, the season surges on for both squads. The men’s team got off to a slow start as the holiday break began, dropping their first three contests vs. Taylor University, Indiana Tech and Indiana Wesleyan University. Despite the big loss, the Leafs were not rattled, returning home to beat the Spring Arbor Cougars in overtime, 70-68 just three days later. The Leafs were unable to capitalize on the momentum from their overtime victory however, and are now in the midst of an eight game...

Warren giving new roles a shot
From the office to the sidelines, Richard Warren has recently accepted two new roles on campus. In the past three years, you would’ve found Warren cooped up in the Admissions Office. Today, he’s hiding out in the bottom of the Administration Building or on the basketball court with the Goshen College women’s team. After serving as the senior admissions counselor at Goshen College, working specifically with adult and graduate studies for the last eight months, Warren sought a new opportunity and a change of pace. The nameplate on his desk now reads, “Annual Giving & Advancement Coordinator” as of Dec....

Life doesn’t always go as planned. At 40 years old, Tyler Morris can tell you that – in person. From teaching elementary school students in Nebraska, to coaching high school students in Minnesota, to whipping up homemade pizzas in Iowa, to coaching at the collegiate level in Wisconsin and now in Goshen, Morris has done it all. On Nov. 2, Morris stepped into the assistant coach role for the Goshen College women’s basketball team, just five days before the team’s first game of the 2020-21 season. Morris had five days to work alongside Stephanie Miller, the head coach, getting quick...

Split success for Goshen basketball
Both the men’s and women’s basketball teams were in action this past weekend. The men’s team failed to defend the Ruth Gunden Gymnasium as they fell to Trinity International University 79-93 on Saturday. Meanwhile, the women’s team traveled to Western Wisconsin for a weekend tournament hosted by Viterbo University. The Maple Leafs lost Friday’s matchup 77-56 before bouncing back for Saturday’s game to win 70-62. At home, the men began the game playing their brand of basketball. They like to play a physical defense, and when attacking, they look for layups and hunt for 3-point opportunities. On offense, the Maple...
