From the office to the sidelines, Richard Warren has recently accepted two new roles on campus.

In the past three years, you would’ve found Warren cooped up in the Admissions Office. Today, he’s hiding out in the bottom of the Administration Building or on the basketball court with the Goshen College women’s team.

After serving as the senior admissions counselor at Goshen College, working specifically with adult and graduate studies for the last eight months, Warren sought a new opportunity and a change of pace.

The nameplate on his desk now reads, “Annual Giving & Advancement Coordinator” as of Dec. 1, 2020, while his Nike gym bag and whistle sit in the corner of his office.

As the annual giving & advancement coordinator, Warren will oversee the phonathon, serve as a member of the Maple Leaf Athletic Club and collaborate with Financial Aid regarding student scholarships.  

Another duty of his will be to collaborate with the advancement team and communication and marketing team in the planning of giving days.

“I really want to work towards fostering positive relationships with our GC alumni and friends, all while providing additional resources for current and future students,” Warren said.

When asked about the difficulty of this move, Warren was nostalgic yet optimistic. 

“It is difficult leaving a team that I value and respect professionally as well as personally,” he said. “The admissions team was great to work with, always supportive, and was an incredible environment to be a part of.”

Nonetheless, the transition has gone smoothly and Warren attributes that to Caleb Longenecker-Fox and the entire advancement team.

“Caleb Longenecker-Fox was a huge help during the transition period. Caleb and I had a month of overlap in the role. I was able to pick his brain daily and learn a great deal,” Warren said. “The advancement team has played such an essential role in helping me learn new software, sharing institutional knowledge, and being available to answer questions I have had.”

“What excites me the most about my future in this role is that I get to work with so many different departments, all of which are geared towards helping students and improving their future,” he added.

Warren is confident that his previous experience in admissions and as a head track coach at The Ohio State University are bound to help him excel as the annual giving & advancement coordinator and assistant coach.

“These experiences provided insight into the amount of time, collaboration, and resources that are involved in putting on a successful event. My role in admissions will also aid in future success as I was able to gain valuable institutional knowledge of GC,” he said.

Warren’s desire to become more involved on campus is what led him to grabbing a position on the women’s basketball staff.

On the court, Warren provides an extra pair of eyes and gets down to nitpicking detail, works closely with the team’s post players, and brings a great deal of energy.

Warren cites his favorite quote from former football player and coach Woody Hayes’ as a driving force for himself moving forward.

“You win with people.”
