A new season and a new team
The Goshen College women’s basketball team has several new additions this year, including three first-year athletes and a new assistant coach. The year has not started off as well as the team had hoped, with only one win of the seven games they’ve had, but they are confident things will start looking up. “We’ve been starting off a little rough,” said the new assistant coach, Teana Lewis. “But how the team is developing has been tremendous since day one.” Part of the reason for this rocky start is last year’s loss of seniors. “Last year, we had 10 seniors. So...

Roundballers advance to tournament
With a record of 5-12 in Crossroads League play and 11-15 overall, the Goshen College women’s basketball team has secured a spot in the conference playoff tournament, with two games left in the regular season. On the court, they are led by the ‘big three,’ seniors Ava Lickliter and Syanne Mohamed alongside fifth-year Zion Neat. The Maple Leafs sit in eighth place in the conference. Neat is currently in the Transition to Teaching program after receiving her bachelors in social work in April. She is a shooting guard and small forward. She says that the confidence has been high within...

Neat, Mohamed join 1,000-point-club
Goshen College women’s basketball players Syanne Mohamed and Zion Neat have both reached the milestone of 1,000 career points at GC, marking a significant achievement for the program and solidifying their places in school history. For Mohamed, a senior center, hitting 1,000 points was a goal. “To be honest, it feels amazing to be the 19th women’s basketball player to join the 1,000-point club,” Mohamed said, “I am super grateful that I was able to accomplish this throughout my four years at Goshen College.” Mohamed’s journey to this achievement has been unique. She originally pursued a career as a professional...

Proving the league wrong
On Saturday, the women’s basketball team beat Taylor for the first time since 2021, 62-60. The win was hard-fought as Goshen struggled in the first quarter, facing a 16-point deficit, but a buzzer-beater three-pointer going into halftime by Emme Boots, a senior, brought them closer. Zion Neat, a fifth-year, shined in the third quarter contributing 12 points on 4-6 shooting. This was followed by a key bucket in the fourth quarter that brought the Leafs into the lead. Taylor fought hard and took back the lead by five points, but senior Ava Lickliter sprung to action with two layups, cutting...

Carver coaches the next generation
With a striking change of pace and fresh strategy, Tyra Carver is determined to turn things around for the women’s basketball team this upcoming season as their new head coach. As a Goshen College alumna and former player, she has returned to her alma mater with a wealth of experience and a vision for success. Growing up, Carver developed a love of basketball through her father. She said, “He had these basketballs downstairs and by the time I was four, I was dribbling around a men’s size basketball and just fell in love with it.” The love only intensified during...

Women’s basketball fights but falls to Taylor
This past Saturday, women’s basketball lost to Taylor 79-72, falling to 8-10 overall, and 3-5 in conference play. Kyla Foster led the team with 15 points, filling the box score with 11 rebounds and 5 assists as well. Her 5 offensive rebounds helped Goshen to outscore Taylor 11-8 on second chance opportunities. “I felt good about it,” she said. “I wish we could’ve come out with a W, of course, but it felt good being the motor of it while we were down and just trying to keep us together.” Taylor started the game on an 8-0 run; however, Goshen...

Women’s basketball bouncing back
The Goshen College women’s basketball team is more than halfway through the season, and they have their eyes set on the Crossroads League tournament. This season started off strong with the team winning their first three games, but it eventually slowed down. During winter break, the Leafs went 1-7, but the team culture remains unbreakable. Head coach Stephanie Miller described the team as feeling “frustrated but hopeful.” “I am so proud of this group for the way they are being resilient during a difficult time,” said Miller. “This group is doing a really good job of just understanding that it’s...

Leafs look to continue strong start to WBB season
The last time the Goshen College women’s basketball team had a winning record in a season, the team went on a run to the 2016 NAIA national semifinals. This year, the Maple Leafs are striving to end the six-year losing streak — and it’s beginning to look like a real possibility. With the Leafs holding a 5-2 record before Wednesday night’s matchup at the University of St. Francis, Goshen has come out of the gate hot and ready to “turn some heads,” as junior Zion Neat put it. “We have a really good culture going right now,” Neat said, “and everybody...

Basketball begins season looking for growth
College basketball returned to Goshen last weekend, as the Goshen College women’s basketball team won two games at the Ruth Gunden Memorial Classic while the men fell to the University of Northwestern Ohio. “We sure are energized, and we’ve got a lot of talent,” said Stephanie Miller, the women’s head coach, after the Goshen team’s 75-68 comeback victory over William Jessup University, a private California school. “We’re very young,” Miller said, “and you can see that. We’re making a lot of mistakes…we’re not really 100% sure about anything. I think it’s just gonna take some time for us to really...

Men’s and women’s basketball seasons come to an end
The Goshen College men’s and women’s basketball teams battled against Bethel University at home on Saturday in the annual US Highway 20 Cup. The women’s team came out on top, winning 108-98, whereas the men’s team fell short, finishing the last game of their season 63-84. On Tuesday, the women’s team also wrapped up their season after losing to Indiana Wesleyan University in the conference tournament. “I was disappointed in the result tonight and felt like we are a much better team than we showed out there,” said Stephanie Miller, the women’s basketball coach, after the Tuesday game. “But what...

Coach Stephanie talks basketball
With two games left in the season and a 12-16 record, the women’s basketball team has begun preparing for the Crossroads League Tournament, just a week away. I asked their coach to reflect on the season. Q: From a coach’s perspective, what are your thoughts on the season so far? A: This season has been such a wonderful adventure. Blending the combination of seasoned veterans with new and young talent has been a refreshing formula for success for us. We have truly had some exciting highs and frustrating lows, but that is what makes it interesting and keeps us pushing...

Women’s basketball defeats league rival Taylor
On Nov. 23, while most students were heading home for Thanksgiving break, the Goshen College women’s basketball team traveled to Upland, Indiana, for a conference match-up with Taylor University — and they came out victorious. The team knew they needed to slow down the Trojans’ transition offense, defend the perimeter with purpose and rebound the ball to eliminate second chance opportunities, but head coach Stephanie Miller placed the biggest emphasis on “traveling well.” In a shortened school week with holiday break looming, it’s easy to lose focus in anticipation of the holidays, but the Leafs were able to get the...
