Art exhibit continues for another month
Since November 19th, student artists have been displaying their work in the Good Library Basement Gallery in an exhibit entitled “Tolerance and the Other.” Students were challenged to reflect on the theme of “Tolerance and the Other” and create artwork that would give viewers an opportunity to view themes of tolerance from new perspectives. The result was a variety of different pieces done with a variety of different mediums all working to capture one open-ended theme. Ida Short, a senior visual art major and piano pedagogy minor, submitted two pieces for the exhibit: a photograph titled “Human Trees” and a...

Gallery Showing Mennonite Identity Through Every Day Objects
How do Mennonites use material objects to express identity? Historically, it may have been through plain dress, head coverings, and large potluck dishes. But now, in order to represent the more recent history of the Mennonite church, we look to things like plates, mugs, and t-shirts. A new gallery on Goshen’s campus tracks this history in a creative display curated by Kate Yoder, a senior art and English writing double major. In a press release from August 25, Yoder wrote “This exhibit is devoted to the way Mennonites since World War II have used commercially produced items of material culture...

About 680 people were in the audience in Sauder, including the 145 ISC participants, which included 42 performers plus the 40 members of the Women’s World Choir, 13 cleaners, 33 cooks, 11 ushers and publicity workers, and a couple of MCs. Around 400 people attended the dinner in the Church-Chapel. Skip Barnett, associate professor of English and...

Midwest artist Dooley named Kenagy Visiting Artist
The Goshen College Art Department welcomed Scott Dooley, chair of the Art Department at Wittenberg University, on Wednesday, Mar. 5. He is the Eric Yake Kenagy Visiting Artist for the 2013-14 academic year. Wednesday’s lecture was made possible by the Kenagy Endowment to Goshen College. The Eric Yake Kenagy Visiting Artists Lecture series has included printmakers, potters, sculptors, painters, jewelers and others from all over the United States and the world. Ink Spill: Students Share the Stories Behind Their Tattoos
Kayla Riportella Copy editor kmriportella@goshen.edu The decision to get a tattoo requires a great deal of both thought and courage. Figuring out something to keep permanently on skin is time consuming and difficult. After deciding, one is then faced with the process of being stabbed with a needle more times than you can count. Most people tend to avoid encounters with needles if they can. But for those who view the pain as worth the product, it is a necessary step in acquiring something that becomes a part of them forever. Ben Pollitt When contemplating the idea of getting another...

Author, Quilter Speaks on the Art of Amish Quilts
Janneken Smucker knows quilts. A 1998 graduate of Goshen College, Smucker recently released the book “Amish Quilts: Crafting an American Icon,” which explores the colorful history of Amish quilts, quilters, and those who love them. The book has been quite successful and was even featured in the New York Times 2013 Holiday Gift Guide. In Monday’s convocation, Smucker gave a presentation entitled “Amish Quilts: America’s First Abstract Art.” During her presentation she discussed the rich history of quilts and showed a number of slides. Until Smucker’s presentation, many students may have thought of quilts as simply something to put on...

Artist Corner: For the love of the process
I like not knowing where I’m going or what lies ahead. The excitement in the unknown is what drives me to create. Whether the final product will be a success or a flaming piece of crap is beside the point. The process is an addiction– it is where I learn and where I can experiment with new ideas. It is where I stumble in the dark trying to figure out what to do. Focusing only on the end goal destroys the fun and makes a much less satisfying end result. Not knowing where I am going awards me unlimited possibilities....

Artist’s Corner: Maddie Gerig
My favorite medium is clay. I feel like I am still becoming an artist. With clay, my hands seem to do the work and my mind follows along. It wasn’t originally a conscious decision to try to be an artist. I realized art was something I did in order to keep sane amidst the stressors of everyday life, so I figured the most practical (and personally satisfying) thing to do would be to make it a vocational goal. I created the bottle this past May while experimenting with different forms and firing techniques. I was inspired by a photo of a...

Artist’s Corner: Daniel Buschert
You may recognize some familiar campus spots in Daniel Buschert’s drawings, which will soon be on display in the Hershberger Art Gallery as part two of the senior art exhibit. “Stairwell Distortion,” one of Buschert’s favorite paintings in the exhibit, depicts the over-emphasized distortion of the hand railing at the east end of the KMY Connector. Buschert explained how the familiar scene of the steps and ramp gets distorted as the hand railing, which he has painted on the front of a Plexiglass sheet, is curved and presented on the backdrop of the game room, which is painted on the...

Students display art in senior exhibit
Artwork by four Goshen College seniors is on display in the Hershberger Art Gallery through March 27. These students–Abe Stucky, Laurel Woodward, Emma Brooks and Meredith Ebersole–are participating in the first of two senior art exhibits this semester. A reception to celebrate the work of these four artists was held in the Music Center on Sunday, March 9. The exhibit features many types of artwork, including ceramics, figure drawing, mixed media and graphic design. Brooks, who chose to present graphic design works, is using different techniques to display her designs. For example, a spiral-bound calendar hangs from fishing line, while an...

Artists Corner: Laurel Woodward 2/7
Like many budding artists in schools around the world, Laurel Woodward found herself utilizing the margins of her note growing up. “It wasn’t only sketches,” she said, but doodles and lettering, too. Woodward’s early love for drawing has led her here, preparing for her senior show as a fourth-year art major. Perhaps because she had always enjoyed sketching, she said, “Figure Drawing sophomore year was a class I fell in love with.” Woodward found the intimacy of figure drawing to be a subject full of potential. Drawing has always been her preferred medium, and sketching her favorite style. But as...

Senior art major finds inspiration on 8th street
Have you ever looked at other people’s houses on Google Maps, zooming in to get a close-up view of the porch, the windows, the doors—every external detail? That is what Abbie Miller, a senior art major, did to create what she has named “The 8th Street Project.” After taking contemporary art history, an upper level art class, Miller started thinking about things she saw in her everyday life as inspiration for her work. She began by drawing the houses on 8th Street in Goshen, each house on one library catalogue card. Then she began looking at other 8th Streets across the country...
