Beating the end of semester burnout
As we feel the endless waves of disdain towards the horrible trudging of this long semester coming to a close, we also see the students on the Goshen College campus showing their unique but fun ways to cope with their piling workloads. In order to avoid the infamous “burnout,” our students implement ways to keep themselves motivated, and most importantly, “locked in” to their work. Just yesterday, the warmest day in a while, instead of studying for finals students were playing sand volleyball, boosting their shrinking spirits! Walking to class, you could see some students carrying a Nintendo Switch...

Leafs celebrate culture shift
The Goshen College baseball team boasts the biggest roster on campus, with 41 current players. Brad Stoltzfus is in his second year as head coach after spending five years in the assistant head coach position. One of Stoltzfus’ accomplishments over the past two years was to bring change to the culture within the team. Stoltzfus outlined his ambition for the team when he was appointed as head coach. He said, “My goal coming in, one of the major focuses for me last year, was kind of getting the Goshen college baseball culture to a good spot. We want it where,...

Voices on Paper: students unite
A variety of students gathered in the visual arts building on Wednesday to make posters in support of the protest that will be held in downtown Goshen this Saturday. The event was organized by students from the student task force — the organization’s current name that the leaders hope will soon become more refined, as they plan to submit an application to become an official club soon. The event opened with a brief presentation from the planners, explaining the reason for gathering, and providing ideas for possible poster slogans — such as “we are human,” “unidos jamás seremos vencidos” or...

Romero elevator down multiple times
The elevator in the Octavio Romero Apartments, the primary residential building for upperclassmen on campus, has seen an increase of issues in the last few months. In addition, Romero has seen an increase of fire alarms recently, leading to questions about the alarm system, and making students reluctant to leave the building when the alarm goes off. Brian Mast, director of facilities, said that troubles with the Romero elevator began right before winter break. Mast said that within the past few months, there have been seven or eight reports of the elevator breaking down, with half of the outages being...

Students spooked at Haunted Halls
While Miller Residence Hall typically sits empty, last Friday, Oct. 25, Res Life once again hosted their Haunted Halls event. While some may remember the event from last year, Kevin Schultz, assistant director of Residence Life, says this year’s turn out put last year’s to shame. Schultz stated that he “lost count,” of how many people went through during the night, some groups coming back multiple times. There were a total of seven rooms — each designed to scare — that were put together by resident assistants. Chandler Buchfeller, resident director, was responsible for leading each group through the darkened...

Letter to the Editor: The New ID Card Policy Isn’t That Bad
I’m a senior this year, and I’ve lived on campus with the original ID card policy for the last four years. I’ve also worked as a resident assistant for three of those years, and I’m happy with the new ID card policy. During my time as an RA on Yoder 1, all throughout the day, people would cut through the floor to get across campus. To me, my floor felt more like a glorified hallway than an actual residential space. This led to a number of really awkward and uncomfortable situations. When I would take a shower, I would walk...

Student Senate: Voices of Goshen College student body
The Student Senate is the connection between the student body and administration here at Goshen College. Spencer Castillo, co-adviser and admissions counselor, said that the “Student Senate is the voice of the Goshen College student body.” He works with Gilberto Pérez Jr., co-advisor , vice president of student life and dean of students, to guide the senate in advocating for diverse student groups, helping secure funding for clubs and organizations and facilitating discussion that shapes campus policies. The president of the senate is Javier Reyes, a sophomore pre-med major. After having taken leadership roles in high school and...

Clocktower rings once more
After years of waiting, the clocktower’s chimes returned to campus earlier this month, ringing out every 15 minutes from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Since most current students have never known the chimes to ring, it took a concentrated effort from Leon Stutzman, ’59, to put the wheels in motion enough to bring them back. “I have one of those recumbent trikes,” Stutzman said. “I’ve always enjoyed riding through the campus, but there were no chimes and it just didn’t seem right. It just felt kind of flat or empty.” Stutzman moved back to Goshen eight years ago, and in...

Academic Success Center adds new positions
The Goshen College Academic Success Center (ASC) renovated their facilities in the Good Library with help from a $3 million grant from the US Department of Education. The facility was finished on Monday, August 19, just when classes started. This allows them to expand their services and staff in a new environment, and create a space where students feel welcomed. The grant was given to support achievements of Hispanic/Latinx and commuter students, connecting them to careers. “We want to make sure that the students have a solid foundation,” said Michelle Blank, director of academic success. Isacc Hernandez, a connections...

ID cards lose access
The beginning of a new school year has brought a significant change to how student ID cards work around campus. This change comes in the form of access; now students can only get on the floor or in the building that they live in. Previously, ID cards would allow access to any residence hall before 11 p.m. on weekdays and 1 a.m. on weekends. This change seeks to improve campus security, however, it poses potential problems for students trying to meet friends who live in a different building or floor. This change means that someone with a stolen ID card,...

Family gives Nappanee orchard new life
Editor’s note: This article was adapted from an Expository Writing class last May Term. Nikki Beer, the owner of Miller’s Orchard, is a first cousin to the author. In the southwest corner of Nappanee, a small town about thirty minutes outside of Goshen, a rustic wooden building trimmed with green is nestled beside a border of towering trees and a simple white picket fence. Behind the building, a large expanse of vibrant green stretches toward the road. Dotted amongst the grass are rows of small, spindly trees, numbering almost 500 in total. The apple trees planted in Miller’s Orchard...

Reflections on heckling
Palms slam the chain link fence, a vuvuzela blares and voices are raised in a chant of “you can’t do that” as a referee awards a yellow card to an opposing player. The Goshen College student section is out in full force for women’s soccer. It ends unfortunately for the Leafs; Siena Heights gets the 2-0 win, dealing the Maple Leafs their second loss of the season. But the student section is engaged until the end, cheering on their team, making noise and willing them to put a ball in the back of the net. The GC student section was...

‘Gift to our community’: Reyes as a campus counselor
Master of Social Work (MSW) intern Cristina Reyes has worked on campus Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and students have already noted her impact. “Every week, I receive requests from students specifically asking to see Cristina because they have heard great things about her from friends and other GC students,” said Liz Andes, assistant dean of students and director of health and wellness. Reyes is currently enrolled in the MSW program at Indiana University South Bend which places students at a practicum site based on their preference. She is also set to graduate next month. Reyes...

Andes to step into new role as assistant dean of students
Starting next school year, Liz Andes will serve as the Assistant Dean of Students at Goshen College, working alongside the head dean of students Gilberto Perez. Andes currently works as the college’s director of health and wellness and Title IX deputy coordinator. She is trained as a clinical social worker. Prior to her time at GC, she lived in Seattle, Washington for 15 years. For eight of those years, she worked in refugee resettlement, then became a medical social worker at Seattle Children’s Hospital. Andes moved to Goshen during the COVID-19 pandemic, but she did not expect to work at...

Students protest housing policy after 33 waitlisted
Around 60 students gathered at Schrock Plaza at 10 a.m. today to protest this year’s surge in students waitlisted to the Romero student apartments and what students have described as a lack of transparency, communication and equity. As people began to circle the fountain, music played and leaders encouraged attendees to make signs. After twenty minutes of an open-mic style session where students shared their frustrations, they walked to the Adelphian Fountain chanting “we want change” and posted their signs near the administration building. Students then offered Gilberto Pérez, Jr., dean of students and vice president for student life, the...
