Hot softball start in Florida
Baseball Hall of Famer Ernie Banks might be best known for his catchphrase, “Let’s play two!” The Goshen softball team took Banks’ advice to heart over spring break, playing ten games in four days at the National Training Center in Clermont, Fla. Thanks to a rain delay, the Leafs finished their trip against their first-day opponent, Michigan-Dearborn. After Goshen opened the trip by falling 8-1 to Hanover on Sunday, Feb. 26, the GC/UMD game was suspended to Wednesday, Feb. 29 to create a tripleheader. The Leafs took two of three on the final day, winning the first game 5-4 and...

Softball season winds down in prep for conference tourney
The Goshen College softball team posted a 2-4 record through three double headers over the course of this past week. The Maple Leafs competed against St. Joseph College on Thursday, Purdue University North Central on Friday and Marian University on Sunday. A fourth contest against Bluffton University, Goshen’s home finale, was scheduled for Tuesday, April 19. Due to heavy rain, though, this game was postponed until Friday, April 22. The first pitch of the double header will be at 12 p.m. Managing only two hits in a non-conference game against the NCAA Division II Pumas on Thursday, the Maple Leafs...

Softball team adds two to the wins column
The Goshen softball team has had a busy week playing 6 games and getting rained out for another starting last Thursday. On Thursday, the team traveled to Huntington, Ind. to face off against conference rival Huntington University for a double header. Huntington played strong games to come away with two wins with scores of 10-2, and 10-4. On Saturday, the Maple Leafs hosted the University of Saint Francis for MCC play. In the first game the Maple Leafs pulled ahead in the first inning by scoring 3 runs. The Leafs were able to hold Saint Francis to less than two...

Softball concludes busy week with winning record
The Goshen College softball team won three out of five games this past week. On Thursday, March 31, the Maple Leafs split a double header with conference opponent Indiana Wesleyan University. Another twin bill was scheduled for Friday, April 1 against Calumet College of St. Joseph. Goshen lost the first game, and the second was canceled due to rain. The Lady Leafs then swept the Calvin College Knights on Saturday, April 2 in yet another double header. Thursday held two outcomes, as the Maple Leafs lost the first 0-9, but came right back in the second with an equally commanding...

Softball team off to great start after extended break
The Northern Indiana weather and game scheduling can be blamed for the long break in softball action, but this did nothing to deter the Maple Leafs as the softball team swept Grace to start off conference play, as they hosted Grace College in a double header for the Goshen home opener last Tuesday, March 29. The Maple Leafs swept both games to advance their record to 6-5, 2-0 in the Mid-Central College Conference. The first game started with Grace taking an early lead as the Grace Lancers got one run in the top of the first. The Leafs were able...

Softball Team Starts Off Season with a Road Trip to Florida
The Goshen College Softball team spent their spring break in Florida, playing nine games in four days, diving right in to the start of the 2011 season. The Maple Leafs started off by winning their first game, and ended the trip on a 4-5 record. The first game was against the University of Michigan Dearborn, which Goshen won with a score of 7 to 4. The second, third and fourth games saw a Goshen losing streak going up against a good Saint Xavier with a score of 8-0, and Webber International, whom they played twice to losing scores of 6-3...

Goshen falls short against St. Joseph
The Goshen College softball team was swept 6-2, 14-2 by the St. Joseph’s College Pumas in a home double-header on Tuesday. Brisk winds whipped a newly-positioned flagpole behind center field as the visiting Pumas pulled out two powerful rallies to win both games. First-year Ashley Hackman slipped a home-run hit over the fence during the Maple Leafs’ first at bat to take a 1-0 lead, which the team would hold until the top of the fourth inning, when St. Joseph achieved a hit into the outfield to bring two on-base runners home. This 2-1 lead would be held until the...

Softball-playing population skyrockets
A large incoming class seeks to build on last year’s start. 15 first years will be included in this year’s softball roster. When asked about the outlook for the coming season, Coach Lee Mast said, “I’m excited, I’m fired up, it’s gonna be a fun year…our goal is to compete in conference and be at least a .500 team.” This year’s team looks to be more versatile with much more depth instead of being one-dimensional. Mast says the incoming class will add needed depth, giving the team flexibility in pitching, catching, infield, and outfield. This year’s roster will have a total...

Leafs batting power splits Wildcats
Shortstop Amy Clem, a senior, was recently named Mid-Central College Conference softball player of the week. None of her efforts, however, were as big as her walk-off home run on Thursday as Goshen College earned a 4-3 win, the first win over Indiana Wesleyan University since 2003. The Maple Leafs lost game one in the double-header 9-6. “My expectations are usually better than anyone,” said Maple Leafs Coach Lee Mast, “but [Indiana Wesleyan] is a very good hitting team. I knew this would be a dog fight.” It was the power bats of the Leafs, though, that was the difference...

Healing Leafs fall to Marian Knights
Despite injury-recovered senior pitcher Haly Williamson back in the circle, the Goshen College softball team could not knock off a hot Marian College squad as they were swept 9-1, 3-2 on Saturday in Indianapolis. “Usually it’s the opposite,” said Maple Leafs Coach Lee Mast. “Game one is normally closer, while game two the deficit has been wider.” The Marian College Knights broke into game one with a single run in the bottom of the first inning. The Maple Leafs defense then held strong until the bottom of the fifth inning, when Marian increased its lead to 2-0 with another run....

Leafs straggle behind Pumas
Coming off a Mid-Central College Conference series against Grace College where both games went extra innings, the Goshen College softball team was swept 9-0, 8-7 in a doubleheader on Thursday against the Pumas of Saint Joseph’s College of Indiana. The Pumas smashed through Goshen’s defense, scoring three runs in the first inning of game one. The Maple Leafs failed to bring in any runs as the Pumas rallied for six more runs in the third inning for a nine run lead. The Pumas held on for a 9-0 win in game one. “For some reason, we were just not in...

Injured Leafs tested against Lancers
Despite three injuries sustained last weekend in the Lindsey Wilson Sports Tournament, Maple Leaf softball was back in swing just two days after returning from Kentucky. This time, hosting a doubleheader against Grace College, it was pitcher Jessica Reed commanding the mound in game one. Starting pitcher Haly Williamson sat out due to a line drive that broke her pitching hand on Saturday against St. Catherine’s College. “I had no idea how Jessica Reed was going to pitch,” said Maple Leafs Coach Lee Mast, “but she stepped up to the challenge and did an excellent job.” The Maple Leafs kept...

Leafs swept by Belles of St. Mary’s
After two weeks of preparation, the Goshen College softball team visited St. Mary’s College in Notre Dame for a double header on Tuesday. “[Last Tuesday’s game] was a tale of two different teams,” said Goshen College Coach Lee Mast. “St. Mary’s College has a strong program and, in my mind, is better than any team we played in Georgia.” The St. Mary’s Belles came into the game on Tuesday with a 10-1 record. Both teams remained scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when the Belles broke into the game leading by two. The Maple Leafs managed to defensively hold...

Playing ball southern-style
After a season of no softball, Goshen College boarded a bus to Georgia for the first spring training under Maple Leafs Coach Lee Mast. It was a first for many of the new team members – 11 had never played at the college level. According to Mast, “It was a wake-up call for a few.” The team’s first game against Weston College in Tennessee was canceled due to the cold weather. The team continued to Savannah, Georgia for a double-header. The Maple Leafs lost both games, 3-2 and 11-5. “You could tell it was the first time outdoors,” Mast said....
