Students protest housing policy after 33 waitlisted
Around 60 students gathered at Schrock Plaza at 10 a.m. today to protest this year’s surge in students waitlisted to the Romero student apartments and what students have described as a lack of transparency, communication and equity. As people began to circle the fountain, music played and leaders encouraged attendees to make signs. After twenty minutes of an open-mic style session where students shared their frustrations, they walked to the Adelphian Fountain chanting “we want change” and posted their signs near the administration building. Students then offered Gilberto Pérez, Jr., dean of students and vice president for student life, the...

Hahn steps into new director position
Emily Hahn stepped into a new position on Jan. 3 at Goshen College: She is now the program director of sexual assault prevention, education and advocacy. Hahn was previously the full-time Residence Director (RD) of Kratz Residence Hall and Kulp Residence Hall, but she has been splitting her time between the two jobs this semester. The new position has been created and funded by a three-year grant that GC received in October 2022 from the Office on Violence Against Women, a branch of the U.S. Department of Justice. The grant is intended to improve an institution’s ability to handle the...

Restorative changes in residence life
Although Goshen College is retaining its status as a dry campus, the Residence Life (ResLife) team is taking a new approach to campus discipline, shifting the focus towards reconciliation rather than punishment. “Misconduct and violations of the Standards have historically been seen as this ‘Thing’ that’s bad and shameful,” said Kevin Schultz, residence director for Romero Apartments and Intentional Living Communities (both of which serve mostly juniors and seniors). “Now, these situations are an opportunity to figure out where the gap is between the student and the community.” The new, more restorative approach will attempt to reconnect students who have...

Gender-inclusive housing finally finds a home
After multiple short-lived attempts over the past few years, gender-inclusive housing will return to campus next fall. Available to students of all genders, this housing option will be located on the first floor of Kulp. The Advocates club has been a long-time proponent of this addition, as its mission is to educate and promote open lines of communication between LGBTQ people and straight, cisgender communities. While an original plan would have labeled the floor an Intentional Living Community (ILC), as it has been in the past, the new model released by Residence Life categorizes it as a standard dorm floor...

ResLife reinforces dry-campus policies
Residential students received an email about recent violations of GC’s dry campus rules from Residence Director Emily Hahn on Sept. 10. The email primarily focused on student’s alcohol consumption and stated that alcohol use “on campus and/or while underage is a violation of our community standards.” The message encouraged students to review the standards and think about the impact and consequences of their actions. According to Hahn, the motivation behind the email was twofold. It was partially due to increased reports of alcohol consumption on campus. “There were a lot of conversations,” she said, “a lot of people talking...

Residence life restructures
After a complete overhaul, three new residence directors are reshaping student life this year. After losing both Zachary Frank and Phil Brown, former residence life coordinators, the student life department sought out candidates to fill the two existing residence life coordinator positions over the summer. When three strong applicants emerged, they decided to restructure the program and hired the trio to fill the newly-created roles of residence directors (RDs). The department also added a new position: Director of Health and Wellness, filled by Liz Andes. Kevin Schultz, Emily Hahn and Chandler Buchfeller bring a mixture of expertise. Schultz, a GC...

Residence Life welcomes Phil Brown to Goshen
From May to December of 2019, Phil Brown sent out five resumes a day, Monday through Friday, to colleges and universities all over the country, until he found a job here at Goshen College as Residence Life Coordinator for upperclassmen housing. Brown fell in love with helping people and learning how people think and relate to one another while he was in college, which has led him to his current career path. “I grew up on the outskirts of Queens, which is very metropolitan, so Goshen in comparison is very different,” Brown said. He was the youngest of three children...

Commuter students and Goshen College
An issue becoming increasingly more evident on campus is the physical divide between commuter and residential students. Corie Steinke, associate director of community life, said that commuter students and residential students often do not interact beyond the classroom environment, in large part because there is a lack of a true shared community lounge space. From 2007 to 2017, the percentage of traditional undergraduate students living off-campus rose from 30 percent to 40 percent, said Justin Heinzekehr, director of institutional research. When looking at all students, the percentage rose from 52.3 percent to 46.7 percent between 2013 and 2017. The number...

Brandy Lowe: RA and true F.R.I.E.N.D.
Frank N. Furter lives on the second floor of the Kratz Residence Hall. The bright red beta fish is owned by none other than Brandy Lowe, a sophomore from Angola, Ind., who happens to be the RA for Kratz 2. She is majoring in American Sign Language interpreting and minoring in pre-law. Her interest in those programs, along with her goal to become a legal/courtroom interpreter, is part of what brought her to Goshen College. “There are only a few colleges in Indiana that offer American Sign Language interpreting,” Lowe said. “I [also] really like the community life because I...

Q&A with Emily Hahn
Where are you from and where did you go to college? My name is Emily Hahn, legally, but socially it’s Emily Hildebrandt Hahn so if you see me on social media you’ll see that. I’m from Ohio originally but moved to Indiana to attend Huntington University, and then moved to Goshen just under a year ago for my husband’s job, and here I am! What did you enjoy most about college at Huntington? I was a very big reslife fan. I lived in the same residence hall for all four years, and my residence hall was freshman through senior, so...

Resident Life’s man of many hats since 2002
Overseeing intramural sports, serving students and planning for the future are just a few of the things that Chad Coleman does as a part of his job as the director of residence life. Coleman grew up outside of Goshen, near Dunlap, Indiana. He attended Northridge High School and then went on to Indiana University in Bloomington. Originally he wanted to be a sports broadcaster, but found out how difficult a career that was to get into. Instead, he found he enjoyed being in an educational setting and eventually started looking at working in a college. “I had a former friend’s...

Res Life hosts 12 days of Christmas
Student leaders for Residence Life are working to bring holiday cheer to Goshen College’s campus through a “12 Days of Christmas” event lineup. The daily holiday-themed events started on Nov. 30 and will continue until Dec. 11, which is the first day of winter break. Among many other events, the schedule includes Christmas card making, the music department’s Festival of Carols concert, two movie nights and a hymn sing. Although Residence Life doesn’t have any annual Christmas events, this year’s resident assistants decided that they wanted to do something a little different. Jenae Longenecker, a sophomore and a resident assistant...

From summer camp to resident director
He arrives to meetings early, answers emails, looks for ways to address different issues in the Kratz and Yoder dorms and has to somehow balance the complicated puzzle that is created when a whole community lives together, most of them right out of high school. Fire drills, dealing with misconduct and social interactions with students are Friesen’s bread and butter. Despite being such an important part of the lives of GC students that people seem to assume he sprang full-grown into Java Junction at the beginning of time, Friesen spent many years acquiring the credentials to qualify for the job....

Res Life positions applications
Residence Life is seeking responsible, hardworking and creative students interested in connecting with other students and administrators to bolster the Goshen College community as a whole. Leadership positions such as resident assistant, ministry leader and Campus Activities Council member are not only a great way to get involved, but they also have endless benefits for the future. Not only do these experiences look great on a résumé, but leaders are a valued commodity in the job market. According to Assistant Director Katie Dwyer-Zeman, “Being a student leader provides you with the space to learn about yourself and others, teaches you...

Apartment Council Fosters Community
Tuesday morning, residents of the student apartments received a wonderful surprise if they left the building between 7:00 and 9:30 a.m. Nestled in the corner behind the northwest staircase, the Apartments Community Council (ACC) waited, handing out coffee and Rise ‘n Roll donuts to every unsuspecting person who walked down the stairs. “It was a nice way to get started on a rainy morning,” Grace Weaver, a junior, said. The four current members of the ACC, which started just last year, are Katie Dwyer-Zeman, assistant director of residence life and student activities; Lucas Harnish, a junior; Seth Krabill, a senior;...
