First-year students had the opportunity to listen and ask questions to Kris Holloway about her experience writing “Monique and the Mango Rains” in an Identity, Culture and Community plenary session on Monday, Nov. 2. Holloway, an Ohio native, is the author of “Monique and the Mango Rains,” a required text for ICC classes since 2017 that highlights the story of Monique Dembele, a midwife and healthcare worker from Mali, West Africa. Elizabeth Bennion teaches students how to be politically active
Elizabeth Bennion, professor of political science at Indiana University South Bend conducted a workshop and lecture on Zoom Tuesday, Oct. 13 and Wednesday, Oct. 14 for Goshen College students on what voters should know before casting their ballots in the upcoming election. Wednesday evening’s lecture was sponsored by the Yoder Public Affairs Lecture Series. Michelle Alexander visits Goshen College
Last night, on Feb. 19, Goshen students, faculty, staff and community members, welcomed writer, civil rights advocate and professor Michelle Alexander. Alexander, best known for her 2010 book “The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness,” presented at the Atlee and Winifred Beechy Peace, Justice and Reconciliation Lecture, in Sauder Concert Hall. Goswami wins Oratorical Contest
Ronit Goswami, a sophomore exercise science major from Goshen, won the 2020 C. Henry Smith Peace Oratorical Contest and $300 in prize money on Tuesday Feb. 18. The transcript of his speech, “Finding Peace in the Trenches: The War on Homlessness,” and a video of his performance will now be submitted to the bi-national C. Henry Smith Peace Oratorical Contest hosted by Mennonite Central Committee. Summit evaluates democracy, climate
“Good morning, and welcome to the climate crisis.” Jim Poyser, executive director of Earth Charter Indiana (ECI), kicked off the fourth annual Indiana Climate Leadership Summit last Thursday with these words as he addressed those in attendance in College Mennonite Church (CMC) on Goshen College’s campus. Hayhoe calls for loving ‘our global neighbor’
This past weekend, Goshen College hosted the 19th annual conference on religion and science. The conference included a series of lectures, two of which were open to the public, as well as multiple discussion sessions that were reserved for registered participants. The keynote speaker was Katharine Hayhoe, an atmospheric climate scientist and a professor and director of the Climate Science Center at Texas Tech University. A presentation on Tuesday evening given by Kimber Nicoletti-Martinez, MSW, LCSW and director of the Multicultural Efforts to End Sexual Assault (MESA) program at Purdue University, marked the beginning of events and workshops held at Goshen College for Sexual Assault Awareness Month. A plenary lecture on Tuesday evening by Elaine Meyer-Lee, associate vice president for global learning and leadership development at Agnes Scott College, marked the opening of a two-day global education conference at Goshen College. Emily Stoltzfus, a senior social work major from Goshen, Indiana, won the C. Facing fear through connection
On Tuesday, Feb. 5., Merrill Krabill, professor of art at Goshen College and the department chair, delivered the 2019 C. Henry Smith Peace Lecture.
