Bollinger named men’s volleyball head coach
Wyatt Bollinger will take over the reins for men’s volleyball, replacing Jeff Phillips as head coach. Phillips will remain on as head coach for the women’s volleyball team. The move was announced by the athletic department on April 23, less than a week after The Record published a story covering Phillips departure from the men’s team. Phillips joined Goshen College in 2023, and coached both the men’s and women’s teams for two years before stepping back from the men’s side this spring. Bollinger transferred to GC for his senior year, and holds the single season record for assists per set....

Taking games ‘one at a time’
Six games remain in what has been one of the toughest seasons in Goshen College Men’s Volleyball history. The team is stepping into the final games with a conference record of 1-9. Though it is mathematically possible for the team to still make the conference tournament, Coach Phillips stated that the most important thing is to put together a good run of performances and pick up some wins to end the season. The team has endured an extremely tough season having only recorded four wins so far. Sophomore right side hitter, Sawyer Frystak, commented on the team’s struggles: “We had...

Men’s volleyball gets early start
Men’s volleyball advanced through three rounds in The Academy Men’s Collegiate Invitational in Indianapolis last Saturday with two wins (2-0 and 2-1) and one loss (1-2). The games were part of an exhibition tournament that helped the team prepare for their official season, which will start in January. Head coach Jeff Phillips has had this tournament on his radar since he took over the program early last year. “[The tournament] was one of those ones we kind of planned to make sure that we got into this year,” he said. “It just gives us an idea to obviously go play...

Representation and retention fall short
On Jan. 3, Goshen College men’s volleyball coach Lauren Ford left GC to take a job at Edward Waters University, a historically Black school in Jacksonville, Florida. Ford’s departure was notable for many reasons, including her success with the team. Crucially, though, it marked the latest occurrence of a recent trend: women of color leaving GC. According to Justin Heinzekehr, GC’s director of institutional research and assessment, there were 16 women that were Black, Indigenous or people of color (BIPOC) employed by GC on Nov. 1, 2021. On Nov. 1, 2022, 11 of those 16 were left. Moreover, two of...

Men’s volleyball prepares for upcoming season
With only a few months until their season begins, the Goshen College men’s volleyball team prepares to compete as a relatively new team. This year’s team features a significantly different roster from the one fans saw last season. With only one starter returning, senior Ian Fox, many of the team’s players are new. Despite these new players, however, the team as a whole isn’t necessarily young; the group includes two first-years, one sophomore, four juniors, four seniors and two fifth-year players. To prepare for the season, players have been engaging in fall practice. Fall ball allows players to tune their...

Men’s volleyball closes conference season with a win; seniors receive recognition
The men’s volleyball team defeated Cornerstone University on Saturday to rack up their 20th victory of the season. The game was the last of the season after not qualifying for national tournament pool play. The men ended the season with an overall record of 20-9 and an even 7-7 record in the Wolverine-Hoosier Conference (WHAC). The home game was preceded by a time to honor the program’s nine graduating seniors. This group has seen the program through its four years of existence since the sport was added just three years ago in 2019. Before recognizing the seniors, Lauren Ford, the...

Michael Wahl reaches 3,000 assists
Michael Wahl, a fifth-year ASL major from Canton, Ohio, broke the 3,000 assist mark on Wednesday, March 16. Wahl is currently leading in total assists in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) and is third in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) for total assists. “[3,000 assists] was my biggest personal goal so it was really great to reach that,” Wahl said. “It feels nice to finally feel like all this hard work that I’m putting in is finally paying off for something.” Although 3,000 assists is a huge personal accomplishment for any setter, Wahl attributes this milestone to more...

Men’s volleyball 4-0 on the season
The Goshen College men’s volleyball team started their season off strong, defeating Trine University at Indiana Tech last Friday, after a season-opening sweep over Hiram College at home the previous Saturday. They continued their winning streak on Tuesday, beating both Trinity Christian and Olivet Nazarene. “I’m pleased with how they’ve played the past four matches,” said Lauren Ford, the new men’s volleyball head coach, who was hired this past summer. “We’ve worked so hard on a lot of things and I see a lot of it translating onto the court in tiny ways.” On Friday night, the Goshen College team...

Men’s volleyball falls in conference tournament
Men’s volleyball ended last Friday with a loss to ninth-ranked Lourdes University 3-0 in the conference tournament semifinals. It was the first time the team played in the conference tournament. This is despite a shake up at the head coaching spot, as Jim Daugherty was placed on administrative leave from the team on March 8 and resigned on March 29, as reported by the Goshen News. Despite all the season’s turmoil, the team finished 15-9 overall and third in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference with a 7-5 conference mark and were ranked for the first time, reaching as high as 14th...
