With frost comes the end of allergies
As cool weather settles in, allergy sufferers anticipate relief. “I’m waiting for the frost,” said Kay Miller, an elementary school teacher from Goshen. Miller has struggled with severe allergies for years. Laryngitis, sinus pressure, chest cough, puffy eyes. “It’s pretty bad,” she said. Miller looks forward to fall weather for a return to normal. “Once the frost hits I have no trouble,” she said. But relief will be less reliable in the future. Climate change is altering the length and intensity of allergy season, experts say. A 2010 report from the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA), “Extreme Allergies...

Healthy living at Goshen College: a guide
When Bryce Stopher arrived at Goshen College as a first-year in the fall of 2016, he had unknowingly brought with him an infection, which had taken root in his arm. Stopher, now a senior, said he didn’t really notice the infection at first. His arm had become sore and warm — he thought maybe he had hurt it while moving in. He brushed it off and tried not to worry about it. At least, until he passed out in his dorm room. When he came to, it became clear he needed to get to the hospital. But instead of asking for...

A journey of self-discovery and yoga
If you need a break from school, take a year off to teach yoga. That’s Reed Yoder’s strategy, a 21 year-old Goshen resident who was a junior studying social work at Goshen College. Yoder is taking a gap year to teach yoga in the fall, and plans to travel to India to study the practice this spring. Last year, Yoder was at a crossroads in his life. He said he felt like he needed to focus on personal growth and was unsure whether or not social work was what he wanted to do. But one thing he has always been...

Got Yoga?
In need of a good stretch? Perhaps you’ve been feeling overstressed and under-relaxed. Luckily for you, Reed Yoder, a junior social work major, has you covered. This semester marks the beginning of a yoga club led by Yoder. The club meets Monday mornings at 10:00 a.m. in the Recreation-Fitness Center. Teaching is relatively new to Yoder, as his first venture came only months ago, during GC’s 2018 Healthy Bodies week. However, Yoder is a seasoned yoga practitioner. Since the age of 15, he has been practicing yoga primarily for the mental and physical health benefits it provides. He believes that...

Moving Forward by Stepping Back
To be blunt, taking a semester off halfway through your undergraduate degree is weird. Between second and third year is where things are supposed to really get difficult. But instead of focusing on my junior project like so many of my classmates were, I went home. My two years at college had been spent jumping from purpose to purpose, major to major. I didn’t have time to think about whether I would stay interested in my latest major, so I didn’t. It was easier to keep changing majors and chasing the high that comes with thinking that this time I...

October and GC’s Lambert family encourage breast cancer awareness
Come October, breast cancer awareness falls low on the list of things of things busy college students are thinking about. But for the Lambert family, those diagnosed with breast cancer are always at the forefront of their minds. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an annual international health campaign by breast cancer charities to increase awareness and raise funds for a cure to the disease that Trish Lambert was diagnosed with in 2014. Trish had a routine test in 2014 that uncovered the cancer. “I sort of had an inkling that would be the news, but it still doesn’t prepare...

New campus counselors hope to be valuable resource to students
Goshen College is partnering with Oaklawn Psychiatric Center and welcoming two new counselors, Rick Eby and Jennifer Miller, to their staff for the 2018-19 academic year. Eby, an Eastern Mennonite University graduate, taught for many years before getting his master’s in counseling at Grace College. He has counseled at many places including Bowling Green State University, a juvenile justice center and received his current position at Oaklawn Psychiatric Center in Goshen just over a year ago. Goshen College is a familiar place for Jennifer Miller, a 1992 GC graduate. Miller, who grew up in Germany, recalled memories of living in Goshen’s...

Spacious Heart Yoga: a stress-relieving life-saver
Sara Ruth Klassen, Liz Core Shenk and Aaron Shenk, the new owners of Spacious Heart Yoga in downtown Goshen, believe college students shouldn’t be intimidated to try yoga. That’s their mission—to make yoga as available and accessible to anyone as possible. “Yoga helped me bridge this idea that I had learned in college where, in Western civilization, we are more dualistic and tend to separate the mind and the body,” Klassen said. “The body is viewed as negative or as more dirty. Yoga was this spiritual process that said that the body was as sacred as the spirit and integrated...

Healthy Bodies Week celebrated
Students got the opportunity to learn more about their bodies and self-care through a variety of Healthy Bodies events sponsored by Goshen Students Women’s Association (GSWA) this week. There were various events that covered many topics such as a “Conversation about Masturbation,” a Healthy Sex panel led by Dr. Catherine Bast, building self-care valentines, and ending the week by body casting and painting. The week started off with some relaxation and exercise with Yoga Night led by Ann Hostetler on Sunday evening. On Monday, there was space made for a conversation on gender identity and misogyny led by PRISM students....

Safe Zone training informs and advocates

Community Wellness Week convo addresses substance abuse at GC
As part of Community Wellness Week, Barbara Meyer, MD came to campus from Goshen Family Physicians on Oct. 25 to give a convocation called “Your Body: Your Choices.” In this presentation, Meyer covered why substance abuse is a problem, especially for college students, in terms of health, opportunities, and relationships. Meyer said that this wasn’t just any presentation; it was one that was close to her heart and occupation. “Your health and your happiness is part of my job,” she said. “In the hubbub of all the educational and social and spiritual opportunities that flow through your college years, you...

From the U.S Women’s National Team to GC
Twenty-five yards out, off the right post and into the back of the net. That’s how a striker for the U.S. Women’s National Team, who cannot be named due to HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act), scored her first goal after being out for seven long months with an ankle injury. Walking off the pitch that day, the famous player turned and joked to the athletic trainer who had taped her left foot before the match, “You’re gonna have to tape my ankle for the rest of my games.” The athletic trainer laughed in appreciation of the compliment from...

GSWA sponsors Healthy Bodies Week
Throughout this week, the Goshen Student Women’s Association (GSWA) is sponsoring Healthy Bodies Week (HBW): a series of events celebrating physical, emotional, mental and interpersonal health for students on campus. “On campus, there isn’t always space given for positive body talk and for personal exploration through facilitated discussion or workshops,” says Riley Mills, a third year communications major. Mills is one of the five GSWA leaders involved with planning the events. “HBW is a really cool, unique opportunity for people to get together and learn about others’ views on bodies, whether the focus be gender-identification or how to stay mentally...

Lady behind the GC Leafs
There are 17 orange Gatorade containers in the training room in the Recreation-Fitness Center, as well as six padded blue tables with backrests, three orange ice coolers and a shiny metal bathtub. This is the place where Linda K Kaminskis, known as K, spends most of her time. Her office, which is attached to the training room, is comfortable and homey, with books on anatomy overflowing from the shelves, a cabinet full of granola bars and Campbell’s soup, a display of mementos from students and a microwave stacked high with mugs for coffee and hot chocolate for any athletes...
