Anna Barnard leaves mark on community
Part of the Goshen community was tragically lost on Dec. 18, 2016. Anna Barnard, a senior at Bethany Christian High School, lost her life from injuries that she sustained in a car crash on Indiana 23. Barnard was the passenger in the car of another Bethany student when their car drifted into the lane of oncoming traffic and collided with another vehicle carrying six other people. Goshen: A biking community
A year ago, Nat Dick was assigned a project for a class requiring him to develop a way to advance campus sustainability. This fall, his idea became a reality in the form of a bicycle repair station, located outside the Kratz-Miller-Yoder Connector. At first glance, the repair station does not look like much more than two purple poles sticking out of the ground. However, it contains an air compressor which can be used to fill up a flat tire. Along with the air compressor, there are tools chained onto the poles for simple bike repairs. These tools include wrenches, bike...

Rugby club coming to GC
Rugby fans rejoice; the sport is on its way to Goshen College’s campus in the form of a club. If you’ve been around for the past several years, you’ve probably noticed a group of muddy students playing rugby in the KMY lawn on Saturday mornings, despite the actions of mother nature. In the past, this has been a small group of students, however the group is now becoming more public. This year, Lydia Kelsey and Austin Reith have decided to make the rugby group an official club, with membership open to anyone. Andrew Moeggenborg is the faculty adviser for this...

When the race course is a stairwell
The stairs or the elevator? Bob Toews will tell you he takes the stairs almost every time. Toews is the assistant director of institutional research and academic database manager at Goshen College. In junior high, he was always one of the last to finish sprints in basketball practice, but now he participates in a different kind of conditioning. “I’m not a runner, though I probably should be,” Toews said. “I do try to get in at least one stair workout a week.” Toews participates in stair climbing competitions—serious climbs, in buildings like the Willis Tower (103 stories 2,115 steps) in...

In the Lawn by Rec-Fit, Frisbee Rules
In a college town where flying discs outnumber footballs, the Goshen Ultimate Summer League has provided opportunities for student and community players alike to stay active. Ultimate Frisbee is a popular sport on Goshen College’s campus, and pick-up games are often organized on the KMY lawn. However, the college doesn’t have an official team, so students who want more structure turn to local leagues. For a $40 registration fee, players receive a shirt, a disc and a chance to play Ultimate all summer. Students are even eligible for a discounted registration fee of $35. Seth Unruh, a desktop architecture specialist at...
