ABC’s “Secret Millionaire” targets alumni’s organization
Volunteers and students at Urban Faith Works, a small non-profit organization in Gary, IN, received quite the surprise when a ‘documentary’ film crew revealed the truth about their reason for filming there. The crew was actually part of the new ABC reality show Secret Millionaire. The premise of the show is that a millionaire goes undercover to various organizations that operate in underprivileged areas in the US. By the end of the week, according to the show’s website, the millionaire reveals their identity and donates “hundreds of thousands of dollars of their own money” to the organization. When the...

William Klassen’s studies range from GC to Princeton
Author and theologian William Klassen’s experiences at Goshen College included waking up in the middle of the night to load 300 chickens onto a truck as part of a part-time job, taking courses in history and English, learning from speakers and participating in age-old GC traditions. He graduated in 1952 with a bachelor’s degree in English and History and eventually studied at AMBS and Princeton to develop his religious studies. One tradition Klassen participated in during his GC days was the annual feast with Harold Bender, dean of students and professor of theology at the time. Every year, Bender would...

Alumni receive awards for living out core values
Seven alumni were recognized for their wide range of accomplishments last Friday morning, October 1st, when they were presented with the Culture for Service Awards, the Decade of Servant Leadership Awards and the Champion of Character Awards in the Church-Chapel. Though their work varied from doing mission work around the world, to working as a public interest lawyer, to helping artisans around the world, these seven alumni each continued to practice the core values they learned during their time at Goshen College. Special pieces of pottery by Marvin Bartel were presented to Wilma Shank ('46), David A. Shank ('48) and...

Schwartzentruber honored as 100 Most Influential
In May 2009 Dr. Doug Schwartzentruber, medical director of the Goshen Center for Cancer Care and a 1978 graduate of Goshen College, announced the results of the clinical trials for a vaccine to treat metastatic melanoma (skin cancer that has spread to other parts of the body). Little did he know that his successful research would earn him recognition a year later as one of Time Magazine’s “100 Most Influential People.” “My first reaction [to being on the list] was disbelief,” said Schwartzentruber. “I was shocked and wondered why they picked me out of so many people.” On the evening...

Tuition FREE Day
Goshen College students may be upset at the rising tuition costs--the coming year is projected to cost $34,790--but a little known fact is that tuition only covers 65 percent of one's actual educational cost. Friday, March 5, known as “Tuition Free Day,” symbolically marks the approximate point in the year when students' tuition stops paying for their education and the financial support from other means begins,” said Rose Shetler, the assistant director of annual giving. During the 2008-2009 year, alumni and those with connections to the college have given a total of $2.4 million. Moreover, 186 of the faculty and staff at...

Mannequins, Soccer and Printmaking
A new installation art and printmaking exhibition opens this Sunday, Jan. 17, with a reception following from 2-3:30 p.m. Located in the Music Center’s Hershberger Art Gallery, Goshen College alumni Ben Reed ’04 and Sue Hershberger Yoder ’91 will each present their art. Defying the stereotypical divide between art and sports, Ben Reed bridges the gap in an exciting new work titled “Strategy through Creativity.” With a master’s degree in fine arts from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, Reed’s installation creates a smart connection between soccer and art. Large male mannequins stand dressed in suits, peering over large...

Haarer seeks breath of God through radio, poetry
Carl Haarer, one of Boston’s top radio reporters, can play the guitar and piano, sing, write poetry and speak theology. He did all these things – and talked about journalism -- on Tuesday in his Umble Master Class keynote address. Haarer, who works for WBZ, said he had no idea he would become a journalist when he graduated from Goshen College with an English major in 1979. He described his job as a radio reporter as similar to being a student: you listen, learn, process and try to find meaning in new-found knowledge. The key, he said, is to be...

Alumnus proposes Goshen immigration tax
Miguel Cruz, a Goshen College alumnus, is working on a tax to benefit immigrants, the economy and the local government. An article in the Elkhart Truth published last week described illegal immigrants lying about their number of dependents when they file their W-2s. This has resulted in Goshen receiving less money from the state because Goshen can’t prove the actual population. According to Miguel Cruz, immigrants are actually encouraged to make the exaggerations by their employers. Cruz, along with Charles Mumaw, are proposing a flat tax for immigrants in which half of the money would be set aside and refunded...
