Homecoming Weekend Preview
On Wednesday morning, a purple welcome banner was hung on the Goshen College sign. A large white tent popped up on the lawn outside Kulp. All over campus, signs of preparation for Homecoming Weekend, held this Friday through Sunday, were taking shape. Goshen College expects to welcome back an estimated 400 alumni in an annual event that has occurred for decades. Kelli King, director of alumni, church and parent relations, estimates that gatherings have been held for more than 90 years, since the Alumni Board formed in the 1920s. The weekend boasts a full schedule of events, kicking off with...

Goshen students record hymns with professional composer
Twelve Goshen College musicians became professional recording artists last week by collaborating on a new hymn CD with Adam Tice, a hymn composer and GC alum. Tice has published two volumes of 50 hymns and is set to publish another one soon. GIA Publications, a major publisher of sacred choral music, asked Tice to make an accompaniment CD using GC choir members and St. Joseph Valley Camerata, a community choir directed by Scott Hochstetler, professor of music. Tice invited Goshen students because “he knows the halls and acoustics that Goshen has and knew this would be the perfect place to record,”...

Tsigie molds new perspectives with clay
Sitting on a stool and eyeing a spinning mug from six inches away, Abi Abebe Tsigie trims the unwanted clay from the base of his hand-molded mug, and smooths the edges round before initialing the bottom and moving on to the next mug. On a shelf where he stores his artwork, Tsigie shows his collection of pots, mugs, vases and ceramic sculptures. Some have been glazed and fired, and some are the collapsed remnants of failed throws, but all bear the fingerprints of an artist who hopes to shape the world he lives in like the clay he sculpts. Tsigie...

Marvin Graber: A life filled with light, living in the dark
Marvin Graber owns a 1966 Chevelle convertible. “The color is cranberry metallic,” Graber said. “I can imagine the red and the sparkles of the metallic. It has purple, red and maroon pearl chips in it, a black convertible top, black interior, black tires, white letters and chrome wheels.” He went on to describe the engine parts under the hood, including the power steering and power brakes. Graber can provide an exact description of his car despite the fact that he has never seen it or driven it — because he is blind. He lost his vision at age 10. “If...

Math major turned ‘hipster-homemaker’ releases cookbook
Rosanna Nafziger Henderson graduated from Goshen College in 2006 with majors in English and math, not the most obvious path to becoming an authority on food. Henderson herself admits that she could not have predicted that six years after leaving Goshen she would be a cookbook author and food blogger. On Oct. 2, she celebrated the official publication day of her second book, “The Lost Arts of Hearth & Home,” which Publishers Weekly called “an utterly charming collection of recipes and how-tos for the 21st-century hipster-homemaker.” Henderson described the slow process of writing at her home in San Francisco, where she...

McCollum excels as basketball ambassador on world court
Errick McCollum II holds the single season and career scoring records in basketball at Goshen College. In the spring of his senior year in 2010, as a 6’1” guard, he executed a soaring dunk that became an ESPN SportsCenter’s Top 10 play. But unlike the majority of Goshen College students, McCollum never traveled abroad en route to earning his undergraduate degree. His credentials as a global citizen came later, courtesy of his ability to speak with the basketball in any language. This year, McCollum, who is 25, is playing for Apollon Patra, a team in the Greek Basketball League. The...

Acayo, 2011 graduate, competes at NCAA Division I Championship
Peni Acayo, a 2011 Goshen graduate and long jumper competing for Kent State University, finished 11th in the triple jump at the NCAA indoor track and field championships. The Kampala, Uganda native missed the podium and the finals by two spots with a jump of 41’4¼” on Friday, March 9 in Nampa, Idaho. After completing her volleyball eligibility and graduating from Goshen, Acayo chose to finish her last year of track eligibility at a higher level of competition. She chose Kent State University because of the strong reputation of its visual communication design program and its Division I athletics. “Kent...

Tsigi partners with Goshen Arts Center for “Experimental Studio”
The Goshen Art Center has, for the past four months, been developing a wider sphere of influence in the larger Goshen community through its new location on Lincoln Street. Abi Tsigi, a photographer and 2011 graduate of Goshen College, has been renting space for his budding photography company, Ras Studio. Out of the nine rooms that the Goshen Arts Center calls home above the Republican Headquarters in downtown Goshen, Tsigi uses two for gallery space, one for studio and office space and the remaining he shares with the other tenants and artists of GAC. Those artists include painters, musicians, potters...

Filmmaker Landis-Eigsti debuts 20 original films
Jacob Landis-Eigsti, who graduated from Goshen College in spring 2011, will present 20 original comedies this Saturday at 10:00 p.m. in the Umble Center. The show will be completely free and is expected to last about 90 minutes. Landis-Eigsti has been working on films from a very young age. “I just loved the idea of creating something from an idea and sharing it with people; my friends and I remade Star Wars when I was nine," he said. That passion for films was apparent during his time at Goshen College, during which he accumulated many awards for his work on...

Winning marathons a daily occurrence
Justin Gillette ran two marathons last weekend. He won them both. After finishing in two hours, 34 minutes and 50 seconds at a race in Sarasota, Fla. on Friday, Gillette got on a plane and flew back home to northern Indiana. Less than 24 hours later, he ran the Veterans Marathon in Columbia City, Ind. in two hours, 40 minutes and six seconds. Although he hopes to sometime run a marathon on back-to-back days again, Gillette will wait a little while. “I know I’ll do it again, because you hate to not do it again,” he said. “But I’m not...

Goshen alum serves sentence for civil disobedience
Michael David Omondi—a recent Goshen alum who was arrested for hopping the fence onto federal property at the WHINSEC (formerly called School of the Americas) vigil last fall—will be released from his six-month prison term on May 20. Ross Weaver, a fifth-year senior, attended the WHINSEC vigil with Omondi near Columbus, Georgia, in November. Thousands of people gather outside this military base every year to protest this institute that has been known to train military figures charged with serious violations of human rights. Groups of students from Goshen have often attended the protest. According to Weaver, Omondi, who was a...
