Bowling over the competition: Prospectives visit campus
This past Saturday, Goshen College welcomed 36 prospective students to campus for the annual Take Another Look weekend. Activities began on Saturday morning, when students met with faculty in their intended majors. Other activities included attending the ISC Coffeehouse, cosmic bowling at Maple City Bowl and a student-led worship service, all complete with plenty of food. The activities were intended to help build relationships with other attendees and current students. Attendance for this year’s weekend was similar to years past. Dan Koop Liechty, director of admissions, said the weekend is a chance for admitted students who have visited campus before...

iPad initiative unveiled
Goshen College students may welcome a new addition to campus next fall, and it won't just be the incoming first-years. Earlier this week, Goshen College announced the proposal of an initiative to provide each incoming first-year student with an iPad. Ross Peterson-Veatch, associate academic dean and director of curriculum for CITL, is one of the minds behind the proposed plan. “The basic proposal is that all incoming first-year first-time students will receive the latest iPad,” said Peterson-Veatch. “This initiative coincides with the launch of our new core curriculum. Professors will teach the new Identity, Culture and Community course, which every...

Degree partnership with Ivy Tech possibility for 2012
Students who want to come to Goshen College but can't due to the cost will hopefully have another option this fall. Ivy Tech Community College and Goshen College are working on initiating a degree partnership. The collaboration will make classes from Ivy Tech and Goshen College transfer seamlessly, giving the students cheaper options for their education. The idea is to have students enroll for the program as a first-year. The students must meet the enrollment requirements of Ivy Tech, a state-wide college, and Goshen College. Only students that would normally be accepted to Goshen would be accepted in the program....

College count stands at 945
Enrollment stands at 945 students this year, down slightly from 960 a year ago. With the end of the drop/add period on Monday, the registrar's office released enrollment figures. Of the 945 total students: * 893 are undergrads *770 are full-time undergrads *170 are first-year students * 52 are graduate students * 52 are in the Division of Adult and External Studies These numbers continue the 40-year downward trend of student enrollment. "I'm dissatisfied with the inconsistent, herky-jerky growth and I'm doing everything I can to turn it around to a consistent upward trend," said President Jim Brenneman. "However, the...

Enrollment update
The class of 2014 adds 182 new faces to campus this fall, with a total of 239 new students including transfers. This year's first-year class total is down from last year's first-year class which set enrollment records as the highest in 17 years. According to Lynn Jackson, vice president for enrollment management, nursing is the most popular declared major among first-year students, followed by biology and then business and psychology. The largest group of new students are from Indiana, with 50 percent coming from within the state. Pennsylvania sends the second largest pool of new students, with 16. Among first-year...

Students leave, GC still high in enrollment
Sixty-nine students dropped out of Goshen College after last semester, the most to leave at midyear out of the last 12 years. Registrar Stan Miller said that while this number is higher than usual, more students also joined before for semester and that the students who left did so for a variety of reasons, including health issues, . Launa Rohrer, associate dean of students, and Miller agree that there wasn’t one overall reason for why students withdrew from classes. “Very few were unhappy with their experience at Goshen College,” Rohrer said. “Most students left because of more personal issues—with family,...

A New Model for Athletic Scholarships
In an effort to attain a larger incoming class for 2009 and to build better teams, Goshen College created a new scholarship model for its athletics program. The program seems to have worked, considering the large proportion of athletes who are new to GC this year. Of 292 athletes, 104 are first years and 11 are transfer students. Coaches who recruit more student athletes now receive more funding for scholarships. The new model took effect in September and greatly contributed to Goshen’s highest enrollment in 27 years (with 237 incoming students), according to Tim Demant, Goshen’s athletic director. This year,...

Goshen College ‘celebrates scholars,’ increase in first-year applications
More than 100 unfamiliar faces were on campus this past weekend for the annual Celebrate Scholar Day. And if it's a sign of things – or students – to come, the admission decline from last year will not become a troubling trend. The high school seniors and potential classmates visited Goshen College to interview for the President's Leadership Award, Gorsline and Anglemyer scholarships, Center for Intercultural Teaching and Learning scholarships and music scholarships. "We want to bring all of these students to the college so they can meet more faculty and learn more about Goshen," said Lynn Jackson, vice president...
