2015 Student Demographics
Each year, new students come to Goshen College from all varieties of backgrounds. In particular, this year has seen a significant increase in the number of Hispanic students enrolled at GC. Historically, Goshen has been predominantly white and Mennonite and that majority has remained true this year. However, one of the most striking things about this year’s demographics is a 5% increase in Hispanic students; from 13% in 2014-2015 to 18% in this academic year. To put this in real numbers, this increase translates into approximately 115 full-time undergraduate students out of 640 total full-time undergraduate students. This increase may be...

GC celebrates Scholar Day this Saturday
Roughly 70 students will be on campus this Saturday for Scholar Day. Seniors in high school will be on campus to apply for a variety of scholarships. According to Jo Helmuth, admissions office and events manager, these include music auditions, communication and business interviews, the Leaf scholarship and leadership scholarships. Not everyone who attends Scholar Day will receive a scholarship. Different departments give out a specific number of scholarships to its applicants. Helmuth named the leadership scholarships as an example, stating that only 35 people are actually given awards. Helmuth believes that this day is and has been a very...

SST requirements change for GC transfer students
For most Goshen College students, Study Service Term is one of the defining experiences of their time at Goshen College. Students who transfer to GC, however, have a difficult time fitting in the three-month long study abroad opportunity amongst the other Core requirements. New changes, active for the fall of 2015, will try to make this credit and time requirement a bit more manageable for transfer students. The changes were approved by faculty vote on January 15th and will be active for students who transfer beginning in the fall of next year. The changes reduce the credit load on...

Enrollment In Mennonite Colleges
Goshen College, as an institution, has made some changes over the years to increase student enrollment on campus. This graphic provides enrollment information from other Mennonite colleges in order to provide the opportunity to see where Goshen stands in relation to these other institutions in terms of both enrollment, as well as the overall gender population of these schools. The student enrollment numbers for this graphic were obtained from both enrollment reports and announcements on Goshen College, Hesston College, Eastern Mennonite University and Bluffton College websites. Both current and past enrollment reports are available for each institution. Along with the...

Goshen College’s Admissions Office Changes Structure
As part of restructuring, Goshen College’s admissions office has shifted in personnel and structure in the last few months. Jeremy Pope, Lizzy Diaz, Nina Mishler, Will Velez and Dan Liechty are no longer a part of the admissions team and have been replaced. In addition, James Townsend is no longer Vice President of enrollment and marketing. Losing Townsend’s position caused one of the biggest structural changes. Kathleen Yoder, Joel Short, Jodi Beyeler, Adela Hufford and Michael Shearer now control the position collectively. Dr. Lee Snyder, the interim provost and executive vice president, heads up this team. The admissions office has...

Goshen College Hires Consulting Firm For Admissions
Goshen College hired the Noel-Levitz Higher Education Consulting firm to aid in revitalizing enrollment operations this year. Though numbers for the 2014-15 academic year increased in the adult and graduate division, the number of students in the traditional undergraduate program showed a slight decrease. Goshen College hired Noel-Levitz with hopes that they will be able to rejuvenate the recruitment management. The firm’s mission is to “achieve Goshen’s goal through a systematic, data-informed and effective marketing and recruitment process.” Dr. Lee Snyder, interim provost and executive vice president, and the leadership team initiated the search to hire a consulting firm. The...

A Year Of Fuller Halls
Goshen College has restructured the underclassmen dormitory arrangements and new students will experience fuller halls. This year, the school has decided to temporarily retire Miller hall, leaving Kratz and Yoder halls available for student living for the 159 first-year, full-time frosh (FYFTF) and 134 returning sophomores. There are 16 commuters from the first-year class, meaning that Kratz and Yoder still hold most of the 85 females and 74 males of the first-year class. The sophomore class, of 76 females and 58 males, is also mostly housed in the dorms. Of the first-years there are 28 Hispanic students and 21 Catholic...

HSI to create ‘positive cultural shift’
Goshen College is slowly and steadily building up to becoming a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI). The designation will make GC able to apply for federal funding that could increase resources for intercultural development. Without the HSI status, GC cannot apply for that specific funding. President Jim Brenneman said, “We have been building the infrastructure and the potential capacity that opens the doors for this kind of growth. We must incrementally keep building the systems.” GC was the first Indiana college to attend the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) six years ago. Rebecca Hernandez, associate dean for intercultural development...

More Signatures Needed for GC Custom License Plates
Goshen College needs you and 350 others to support the Goshen License plate incentive. Coming in 2015, Goshen College and the Bureau would like to produce GC license plates, for parents and students alike. But in order for this to happen, the school needs 350 people to commit to buying one of these new plates (when they are available) by March 31. With the license plates going for $45 apiece, $25 of this fee will go directly to the GC Restricted Student Aid for Indiana students. Along with this donation, the new plates will also be tax deductible. To sign...

Enrollment Application Numbers Rise for Coming Year
Looking to the academic year of 2014-2015, Goshen College is hoping for a larger incoming class, more transfers and enrollment that may lead to becoming a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI). For the past several years, enrollment at Goshen College has been stagnant and goals to increase enrollment have not been met. However, James Townsend, Vice President for Enrollment and Marketing, reported that as of January 9, there was a 16 percent rise in applications and there has been a 12 percent rise in the amount of admitted students compared to last year. With these numbers, the admissions department is heading...

Fact Book makes data as close as the click of mouse
For years, a collection of facts about Goshen College finances, enrollment and student life was tucked away in a filing cabinet in the Registrar’s office. Scott Barge, director of assessment and institutional research, believes that access to this data, and data in general, can create a stronger campus. Though the information was public, faculty and students wanting access to the files needed to sift through them--making fact-checking a tedious and laborious process. Barge hopes to change this. Barge, along with other faculty from the Institutional Research Office, has produced Goshen’s first online, interactive “Fact Book.” Barge started assembling the book...

James “JT” Townsend has new eyes for Goshen’s image
When James Townsend, Goshen College’s new vice president for enrollment and marketing, first arrived at the college in June, his first question was: “Where’s the admissions office and where do students park?” In response, he said, he received a vague series of gestures and roundabout explanations, to which he said, “Well, that’s probably something to address. If it’s confusing to us, it’s confusing to them (prospective students).” That became a guiding phrase for Townsend as he toured the campus with a camera, taking note of anything that might be confusing or disappointing to a prospective student. He said the most...

Through the tunnel: Changes carry campus from old to new
Each year, the beginning chills of fall have beckoned a new first-year class to Goshen's campus. However, for the past three years these classes have only gotten smaller. This year's class of 2016 is comprised of 166 new students from 22 different states and 14 different countries. While there are only four fewer new faces this year compared to last, Goshen's enrollment numbers have been shedding students each consecutive year since 2009. James Townsend, Goshen's new vice president for enrollment, management, and marketing, said it's not just about increasing numbers, but attracting the right kind of students. “There's not...
