Indoor track gets set at the starting line
The indoor track and field team kicks off its season tomorrow at the Grand Valley State University Holiday Open and the Early Bird Open at Defiance College. These are the only meets they will compete at in December, as the rest of the season will be in January and February. Though the team is essentially the same between indoor and outdoor, there are some events that differ between seasons. For the throwers, the weight throw is similar to the hammer throw but shorter and heavier. The sprinters run the 60 meter dash and 60 meter hurdles. Distance runners take on...

A new season and a new team
The Goshen College women’s basketball team has several new additions this year, including three first-year athletes and a new assistant coach. The year has not started off as well as the team had hoped, with only one win of the seven games they’ve had, but they are confident things will start looking up. “We’ve been starting off a little rough,” said the new assistant coach, Teana Lewis. “But how the team is developing has been tremendous since day one.” Part of the reason for this rocky start is last year’s loss of seniors. “Last year, we had 10 seniors. So...

Wrapped up, but looking forward
Goshen College women’s soccer faced a challenging 2025–26 season, marked with multiple injuries that began during the preseason in August. In addition to injuries, the team graduated 10 seniors this year. The Maple Leafs finished their season ranked last in the Crossroads League with an 0-8 conference record and a 1-10-4 overall mark. By the middle of conference play, Justin Crew, head coach of women’s soccer, had only eight healthy players available on the bench, forcing one game to be canceled. On Sept. 13, the Leafs tied 1-1 with the Wolverines of Michigan-Dearborn, with the only goal coming from a...

Goshen College’s track and field team now has all-star experience with the hiring of Tyler Miller, a former Purdue thrower, to coach the Maple Leafs throwing team. Miller, who grew up in Goshen, has decided to come back to his roots, coaching the throwers at his home college. “His background really helped him, making him a really good coach,” said Nick Hofer, a first-year thrower. Liam Shaw, a sophomore thrower, said, “I may have had four weeks of throwing practice with him and the amount of belief I have in myself again is insane.” He continued, “Tyler gives us this...

The Goshen College men’s and women’s bowling teams are starting their second season of competition, hoping to improve upon their performances last year — and promote breast cancer awareness. The changes for this season will allow both teams to be more connected to their home lanes at Maple City Bowl, 10 minutes away from campus. Last year, team members used a storage room for their clothing and gear. This year, they have official lockers. “They only had this little bitty room, and we shared it with the bowling alley for storage,” said Scott Curtis, the bowling head coach. Now, with...
