Goshen College hosted the annual Low Voice Festival at the Music Center on Tuesday. GC’s Vox Profundi was joined by tenor-bass choirs from four area high schools and a tenor-bass choir from Goshen, the Open Fifths.   The high school tenor-bass choirs present at the festival were the Logansport High School Berrytones, the Manchester High School Squire Choir Low Voices, the Elkhart High School Roaring Blue and the Goshen High School Crimson Men’s Choir. The Goshen College Chamber Orchestra, a new string ensemble, debuted last Saturday at the Homecoming Gala with Myroslav Skoryk’s “Melody.” The orchestra — composed of four first violins, four second violins, four violas and one cello — consists of both student and faculty string players.  The orchestra was conceived last year by Solomia Soroka, professor of music, and Rosalyn Troiano, applied music instructor and adjunct instructor of viola.  When asked about what sparked inspiration for the Chamber Orchestra’s creation, Soroka said that she has fond memories of her chamber string group from high school. Goshen College hosted its annual Kick-Off talent show on Friday to start homecoming week. Students brought lots of energy and enthusiasm to each act and were dressed in masquerade-themed outfits and masks.  This year’s event was hosted by Teo Kingsley, a senior theater major, and Maille Goodwill, a junior sign language interpreting major. While the acts were onstage, students jumped, clapped and waved their phone flashlights. On Saturday and Sunday, the 15th annual Michiana Pottery Tour made its way to downtown Goshen as one of 10 different locations. Thewas stop number four on the tour and welcomed six local artists and their exhibitions throughout both days: Eric Kaufmann ’96, Seth Krabill ’14, Fred Driver, Kristen O’Dell, Barb Johnson and Aaliah Higareda ’24.  Many different styles of pottery were available for purchase, showcasing a wide variety of techniques. Advocates, in partnership with the Literary Activism Club and the women and gender studies department, hosted the fifth annual drag show in Umble Center on Saturday. The show featured three professional drag queens: Natosha Salad, Lili Xtravaganza and Beba Hollywood. Salad acted as the night’s master of ceremonies. This drawing is a recreation of Big Fish Eat Little Fish by Pieter Bruegel the Elder that I finished recently. Bruegel is a Renaissance artist whose work I had studied a couple of times when I was in elementary and high school as part of the artist study that my curriculum did. This engraving was originally falsely attributed to Hieronymus Bosch by the publisher because of its absurdity. I really enjoy the surreal, quite silly, style of Bruegel’s more fantastical engravings. The flying fish is my personal favorite, but there are many whimsical creatures to be found!

As the Christmas season draws near, Goshen College music ensembles are working to prepare one of their biggest events: A Festival of Carols. The event opens on Friday at 7:30 p.m. in Sauder Concert Hall. FOC will continue throughout the weekend, with shows at 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 4 p.m. Sunday. In addition to showcasing her composition skills, the performance will also feature Stoltzfus as a vocalist alongside a number of Goshen College students and community members.
