150 highschool students at Nursing and Public Health Career Day
Carrie Eikler, admission visits and events manager, found herself closing the Goshen College Nursing and Public Health Career Day sign-up form for this year after the event received 150 student reservations. The admissions office hosted high-school nursing and EMT students from all over Indiana at the Westlawn Center for Nursing and Public Health on Friday, Oct. 10. Getting a Harvard education from GC’s doorstep
Four Goshen College students spent the first three weeks of January studying public health at Harvard University. The January term, which ended last week, was mostly remote due to concerns over COVID-19, but the students still traveled to Boston. Public health professionals speak on COVID-19 disparities
On Monday at noon, a workshop co-sponsored by the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and the MLK Jr. Day Planning Committee was held, featuring three presenters who spoke on COVID-19 disparities among the African American and Latino communities. The workshop was led by Richard Aguirre, coordinator for community impact. The presenters were Dr. Rose Alvarez Gillin, family physician; Brianne Brenneman, assistant professor of public health; and Zenton Yobera, the first student set to graduate with a degree in public health. Eligible GC students receive vaccines; some turned away
On Tuesday, an estimated 225 Goshen College employees and students received the first dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine, due to a last minute opportunity given by Goshen Community Schools. However, many students registered to receive a dose were turned away later in the day. The clinic was made possible by a federal vaccination initiative to vaccinate educators, coordinated by Meijer Supermarkets and Goshen Community Schools. Public Health practicum to offer global engagement
This year, Goshen College is partnering with Mennonite Central Committee to offer SST-alternative courses in the form of a year-long series on global public health. Local health workers share COVID-19 experiences
According to USAFacts, a non-profit civic initiative, the confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Elkhart County have been declining since cases last peaked in the middle of June. Most recent numbers indicate there are currently 5,702 known cases.
