Maple Leafs not enough to defeat Indiana Wesleyan
On Tuesday, the men’s basketball team traveled to Marion, Indiana to take on the Indiana Wesleyan University Wildcats, who are ranked as the No. 1 team in the NAIA, Division II. The scrappy Maple Leafs fought hard and kept the game close, never trailing by more than 11 points and were able to make it a two-possession game. Unfortunately, they were not able to pull out the victory, ultimately losing 88-81. IWU got the majority of their scoring from the trio of Lane Mahurin (23 points), Jonny Marlin (19 points) and Zac Vandewater (18 points); along with their double-digit scoring...

Maple Leafs Edged By Cougars
Deck: Despite good shooting percentages, Goshen fell to Mt. Vernon last Tuesday night. The Goshen Men’s basketball team rode a two-game winning streak into Tuesday night’s clash with the Cougars of Mount Vernon Nazarene University. Freshman Christian Grider appeared to secure the back-and-forth battle for the Maple Leafs by scoring, giving Goshen a 1 point lead with only 11 seconds remaining in the game. But it was the Cougars who had the last laugh as MVNU’s Eric Roby tipped a missed shot at the buzzer to send Goshen home empty-handed. After falling behind in the game’s opening minutes, Goshen fought...

Winning Streak Ends
The Goshen Men’s basketball team looked to up their win streak to seven on Tuesday night, but the visiting Pilots of Bethel College put a halt to that dream with a 96-76 victory over the Maple Leafs. Goshen came out strong and led 11-2 in the early minutes before Bethel roared back with an impressive run to take the lead. Goshen’s Stefon Luckey, a senior, and Dominique Cartier, a sophomore, both scored to briefly give the Maple Leafs a lead before Bethel went again on a run and ended up leading at the half 35-26. The second half saw an...

Former Goshen Basketball Player Joins The PBL
The Premier Basketball League picked up a Goshen graduate for this fall season. Jerron Jamerson, a 2014 graduate, will be playing in the PBL, a developmental league in the United States that creates exposure for players in the league who have hopes of going overseas to play professional basketball. Jamerson said he has been playing basketball for the majority of his life—since he was about 6 or 7. Before transferring to Goshen College, Jamerson played at Owens Junior College, and while at Goshen he had a major impact on the team. Jamerson averaged about four rebounds and 16 points per...

Four seniors end four years of GC men’s ball
Seniors took the court for the last time on Saturday, Feb. 22nd when the Maple Leafs hosted the Saint Francis Cougars. Jerron Jamerson, Matt Glick, Kyle Capps and Sunday Mahaja, seniors, were honored for their commitment to the team throughout their years at Goshen. “I will take away most the shared sense of pride between all teams and groups of people that put in a gargantuan effort towards a common goal,” said Glick, captain. “I will most miss the private times working on my game by myself, the moments spent pushing myself to become the future me that I knew...

End of Regular Season Marks End for Leaf Basketball
In a way, the Goshen basketball teams have spared themselves one of the stresses of March: when the regular season ends on Saturday, the Leafs will not need to wait to learn their playoff opponent. The men were eliminated from Crossroads League tournament contention with a loss at sixth-ranked Indiana Wesleyan on Tuesday, while the women saw their postseason hopes fall by the wayside Saturday at Taylor. Before the unfortunate reality of mathematics set in, the Leafs kept their season alive Saturday afternoon in a 73-64 men’s basketball victory over Taylor in Gunden Gymnasium. Matt Glick, a senior playing his...

“Black Out” Brings Crowd
The men’s and women’s basketball teams hosted a “Black Out” Tuesday evening during their double header against visiting team Mount Vernon Nazarene University. The event was thrown to encourage students to come out to the games and support the last stretch of their seasons. The women’s team started off the night at 6:00 p.m., with the men following after at 8:00 p.m. “It feels really great knowing you have support even after having a hard season,” said Tyra Carver, a sophomore women’s basketball player. Fans formed a cheer block that soon “Black(ed) Out” the bleachers. Complimentary chips and salsa were...

Painting by Numbers: Math Changes the Picture of the GC Basketball Season
One of the postulates of sports’ quantitative analysis is that “numbers never lie.” Of course, there is truth to this; statistics are as close as we can get to an objective picture of what has happened. But in the words of Mark Twain, there are three sorts of lies: outright lies, even more significant lies, and statistics. There is also truth to this, since there is no catchall statistic; every figure omits something. The ramifications of these dueling realities are significant, especially in a league and a region that has spent more than a century consumed with basketball. This sport...

Weather Conditions Continue to Plague Basketball teams
As frigid temperatures continue to control the schedule of the men’s and women’s basketball teams, coaches and players learn to adapt to change. Both teams have experienced numerous schedule changes throughout their seasons, as weather has not always been in their favor. “We were luckily able to get our Marion game in and save ourselves a three game week. Unfortunately the men were not so lucky,” says women’s basketball head coach Steph Miller. As games are being rescheduled due to weather, teams are booking heavy weeks with as many as three contests in a week. These rescheduled games continue to...

Maple Leafs Lose, Inconsistent
The Goshen College men’s basketball team had a Western-movie feel to it this week. Saturday afternoon, there wasn’t enough shooting. Tuesday night, there was too much. When all the dust had settled, losses to Taylor and Indiana Wesleyan left the Maple Leafs ninth in the Crossroads League. Saturday in Upland, Taylor scored the game’s first basket after six seconds and never surrendered the lead. Goshen fell behind 35-23 at halftime en route to a 73-57 loss. The Leafs never trailed by more than 21 points, but couldn’t close the gap to within 12 in the second half. Despite 14 points...

Lokken to Step Up in Young’s Absence
Tuesday afternoon, the announcement was made that Goshen’s Head Men’s Basketball, Neil Young would take a temporary medical leave of absence. With the announcement, assistant Coach Brandon Lokken will step up as head coach for the time being. “I decided to take this leave because at this time I do not feel I can adequately perform the duties associated with being the head basketball coach. It was a difficult decision however I know there are better days ahead and I look forward to getting well and working with my team again soon,” said Young. Young took on the job as...

A fresh start: Young players add new talents to basketball program
This year, both the men’s and women’s basketball programs have added a substantial number of underclassmen to their rosters. With the men signing four freshman and the women bringing in seven, each team has the potential for greater depth on and off the court. Steph Miller, women’s head coach, and Neil Young, new men’s head coach, have each worked hard to recruit players that will continue to build up their programs. The men’s basketball program has faced significant changes this season, both with the addition of new freshman players as well as with a new head coach. With two of...

Men’s basketball scores big win in Hoopefest
The men’s basketball team pulled off a big upset Saturday with an 80-62 win over 17th ranked Madonna University in the annual Maple City Hoopfest. The win followed a disappointing 50-71 loss to Lourdes University on Friday night. Madonna entered the season with the national preseason ranking of 17th before a Friday night loss by four to number nine Bethel College. The loss to Goshen dropped them to 0-2, and, one would assume, a significant drop in the rankings. Goshen attacked the Madonna defense with a variety of methods right from the start. Behind transition layups, strong drives in the...

Basketball teams to kick off season with Hoopfest
It’s getting colder, most of the leaves have fallen, the soccer nets are being taken down, which means one thing – it’s time for basketball season. The team will face Lourdes University in the opener at 8 p.m. Friday and Madonna University at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
