The Bachelorette: GC edition
It’s not often that reality TV finds its way to Goshen, Indiana. Instead of waiting for that to happen, Hayley Kirkton and Rachel Mast are working on their own satirical take of a national phenomenon. The GC Bachelorette will be Goshen College’s very own rendition of ABC’s hit reality show “The Bachelorette.” In GC’s version, instead of actually trying to find love, Kirkton and Mast will poke fun at popular tropes and give a comedic take on competing for love on a national stage. The project’s conception began when Kirkton, a senior social work major, came up with the idea...

Students and faculty compete in new Fantasy Premier League
Philipp Gollner, associate professor of history, began watching soccer as a boy in Austria. Today, he is dominating the sport ‒ not on the pitch, but in the Goshen College Fantasy Premier League (FPL). Gollner is competing against 25 students, faculty and staff in the college’s first FPL. As of this week, Gollner is in first place with 504 points; Brian Yoder Schlabach is in second, with 474; and Andy Bennett trails in third, with 425 points. Students, faculty and staff were invited to sign up for the FPL through a link that was sent in the communicator earlier this...

GC memes: Soggy, well-fed and full of squirrels
Historians of the present study old newspapers, letters, journals and books when trying to understand the past. Historians of the future will probably study memes. For Lydia Nolt, one of the creators of the Instagram account “Goshen_memes_4_2000s_teens,” a meme doesn’t necessarily have to be an image with text, even though that is the generally understood definition of a meme. According to Nolt, the thing that really matters when it comes to memes is “some sort of unifying factor.” “Everybody gets it,” she said, “or at least they should. Memes are about community.” Nolt is a junior history and secondary education...

‘You feel like a celebrity’: Goshen students reflect on cosplay
At the Oct. 31 Haunted Prairies Halloween costume contest, the crowd of Goshen students cheered as the winners came up to accept their prizes. Among them was Cara Wilson, a senior film and theater major. It wasn’t her first time in costume. Wilson’s first exposure to cosplay, the act of dressing up as characters from pop culture, was at the 2013 Indianapolis Comic Con. “It was really crazy,” Wilson reflected. It was then she decided, “I want to do that.” In 2014, she appeared in her first cosplay as Lady Deadpool from Marvel. The process to put together costumes can...

‘Crash Landing on You’ smashes quarantine boredom
After moving into quarantine this past week, I had some time to fill. A friend recommended the Korean-drama, “Crash Landing on You.” I was skeptical at first, but after just one episode, I was hooked. The show centers around South Korean businesswoman Yoon Se-ri, played by Son Ye-jin, South Korea’s “Queen of Melodrama,” and North Korean Captain Ri Jeong Hyeok, portrayed by award-winning Hyun Bin. While testing out a new paragliding product for her fashion company, Se-ri is swept into a tornado. The strong winds carry her into the Korean Demilitarized Zone, where she is discovered by Captain Ri. After...

Spooky campus folklore: The prank that said “boo” with a “moo”
As told by Al Lohr, graduating class of 1942. Story and picture from “The Cow in the Science Hall,” 1994, by Kyle Schlabach. One dark night—it may have been Halloween—a bunch of us decided to place a cow in Kulp Hall. Now, in order to do this, we needed the help of one of the girls in Kulp Hall to unlock the main door on the street or College Avenue entrance. There were quite a few steps into the dorm, so the task of getting said cow into the hall was not an easy one. In those days, there were...

Spooky campus folklore: The bride of Mr. Smith’s nightmare
In 1930, a Halloween costume party at Goshen College convinced at least one person that the college was going down the toilet. Nowadays, Halloween is not the most controversial holiday at Goshen College, but this incident – which came just 6 years after Goshen’s hiatus to reorient itself as a progressive institution within the conservative Mennonite Church – would go down in history as a symptom of the larger tension many Mennonites were feeling as they tried to make peace with the rapidly changing culture of the 20th century. That year there was a costume party at Goshen College where...

Spooky campus folklore: Alice, the friendly ghost
There is a light in the Umble Center that never goes out. And it’s there to keep the ghosts away. The haunter in residence is Alice, a friendly ghost who is rumored to have been heard tiptoeing around when students are alone in the theater. She is named after Alice Umble, the wife of John S. Umble, the building’s namesake. Their picture is kept in the box office. Her son, Roy, was the first theater professor to use Umble Center after it was built. Melanie Hertzler, a sophomore, once thought she heard Alice when she was studying around suppertime and...

Spooky campus folklore: The secret signings
Turn now to a strangely haunting legend right here at Goshen College: retold by Jeffrey Moore after conversations with Joe Springer at the MHL and Jodi Beyeler from Public Relations. Once there was the basement of Kulp. In the basement of Kulp there was a fireplace. In the fireplace in the basement of Kulp there was a secret shelf – one you could only find by standing up inside the fireplace. On the secret shelf in the fireplace in the basement of Kulp there was a book. And in that book in the secret space in the fireplace in the...

A battle for Wyse 3
History department seniors have used their senior seminar class this semester to apply their knowledge into senior theses, but in the process, have stumbled upon a piece of history about their own department. An old football, which resides in the kitchen on the third floor of Wyse hall, bares a story nearly seven years old that some students are hoping to reenact. “Back in 2005 history majors challenged bible/religion and PJCS majors to a football game,” said Steve nolt, professor of history. “the football prize remains on Wyse 3rd as a trophy.” The third floor of Wyse Hall is home to the...

The Conscientious Objector: An Underground Newspaper
Author’s note: The names of the students involved have been changed to reflect their Conscientious Objector pseudonyms. You see them tacked on bulletin boards, hidden within stacks of papers, scattered across the dorms or maybe tucked into your bike’s basket. Any way that you can get your hands on the two-sided black and white paper, The Conscientious Objector, is a bit like a game of hide and seek. Similar to their sporadic publications and discrete distribution habits are the people behind the paper: a Goshen College underground newspaper shrouded in mystery. Until now, for the most part. The Conscientious Objector...

Family tradition creates a festive role for professor as Santa Claus
Tiny presents wrapped with string, full of toys and trinkets among other things. While the children await for that special night, Santa Samuel would soon take flight. But not by plane, train or sleigh led by deer, but a car and a suit to visit all he holds dear. Jason Samuel, professor of communication, has a yearly tradition that brings joy to family, friends and strangers. Those acquainted with Samuel know him as boisterous, friendly and more energetic than the average 41-year-old. Although he does not have a white beard, these notable qualities have since made him a perfect match...

Soaring to new heights
In early March, Kris Miller, a senior, gave interested students a chance to see another view of the Goshen College campus, as well as an experience many never had the opportunity to take until now. “I once read, ‘Flying is one of the greatest thrills known to man,'” Miller said. “I have always been incredibly fascinated with defying gravity. My dad is also a pilot, and he had me flying at a very young age. I knew from the time I was in middle school that I wanted to be a pilot when I grew up.” Before attending Goshen College,...

New! Fun and games at the library
For those of us who are board or card game aficionados or just bored on a Saturday afternoon, the Good Library is now offering games available for week-long check-out. The games are located on the 2nd floor in two locations: the lounge and the area in the back, known as “The Cage.” There are between 20 and 30 games ranging from traditional games like Monopoly and Yahtzee to new games like Crusaders or Settlers of Catan. Much like the books or DVDs that our library offers, these games have barcodes and date cards, and they are ready for use. The...

Overcoming the Winter Doldrums
Now that the initial excitement of the new semester has worn off and the reality of winter life in Indiana has set in, many of us are searching for activities to look forward to. Some Goshen College students have found that it only takes a little creativity to find interesting things to do. Ice-skating is one activity that students have discovered. NIBCO Water and Ice Park in Elkhart offers ice skating on a lazy river and costs $5 for admission and skate rental. “They have great jams to skate/dance to, which is pretty entertaining to watch, I’m sure,” said Summer...
