Localizing executive orders: Effects on GC
Nine weeks into his second term, President Donald Trump has signed over 100 executive orders. Last Thursday, one of four executive orders signed included an order to start the process of dismantling the Department of Education. The Education Department was created through a congressional act in 1979, under former President Jimmy Carter. Ann Vendrely, vice president for academic affairs and academic dean, said, “The president’s executive order was expected and is not legally binding. ‘A remarkable Indiana woman’
Anita Stalter, a retired education professor and academic dean, unexpectedly died on Dec. 10, 2024. She was age 77. Stalter began at Goshen College in 1987 in the education department. First, teaching part time, and later becoming a full-time professor in 1989. She later served as the chair of the education department, and eventually became the interim dean of students. In 2001, Stalter became the first woman in the history of GC to be academic dean. She continued to serve as academic dean for 14 years until her retirement in 2015. GC proposes master’s degree in teaching
This weekend, the Goshen College Board of Directors will evaluate a proposal to add a Masters of Arts in Teaching program. If accepted, it would be GC’s fifth graduate program and second to be added in two years. Since 2005, GC has offered a transition to teaching program. Through this year, GC has offered those classes at the bachelor’s level, which is uncommon, as most other institutions offer those at the master’s level. Education department adds online option
The education department on campus has been working to identify ways in which more people can get involved within the educational field. Suzanne Ehst, director of secondary education and core director, commented on the switch from primarily offering the grad programs in-person to now switching to virtual. Ehst said, “We have two post-graduate programs. One is the Transition to Teaching program for people who have a bachelor’s degree but no teaching license, and the other is the English Learners licensure addition program for teachers already licensed in one area who are coming back to add EL to their certification.” “This...
