The BSU wants you
The Black Student Union (BSU) is looking to become a prominent club on the campus of Goshen College this year. Led by first-years Alia Byrd, Lydia Beachy and Nashon Lora and sophomores A’Sean Street and Étienne Davis, BSU wants students to learn more about the group, starting by removing common misconceptions. For instance, Street made it clear that BSU wants students “to feel a part of BSU regardless of skin color.” “BSU is not just for African Americans,” Street said. “It’s for anyone who wants to learn more or just be a part of the club.” Street is not alone...

C.O.F.F.E.E. club encourages interaction
On Friday March 27, the first meeting of the C.O.F.F.E.E Club was held in the first floor connector. The acronym stands for Coffee On Fridays For Engaging Everyone. Club founders Luis Perez Lerchundi and Philip Longenecker arrived early and sat at a table by one of the middle windows as they waited for interested students to arrive. The table was covered with Java Junction’s signature stainless steel dispensers full of coffee, hot chocolate and water for tea, as well as a sheet of paper bearing the logo “Sign in, Cuties.” The newly-founded club, one of the newest on campus, had...

What does Catholicism look like at Goshen College?
The Goshen College Catholic community meets every Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. in the third-floor connector for a small group discussion. This semester, the group is focusing the discussion on apologetics. Apologetics is a branch of theology devoted to the reason-based justification of faith. Hannah Quast, campus minister for the Catholic Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend, said that this series “has been training us in how to defend and explain our Catholic faith with kindness and confidence!” Quast, who leads the Goshen Catholic community meetings, said that the discussion content is determined by the needs and desires of the current...

Students organize Divestment Day potluck
EcoPAX hosted a potluck on Saturday, February 14 in honor of Divestment Day. According to Cecilia Lapp Stoltzfus, a sophomore and one of the coordinators of the event, the potluck was created as an attempt to engage the larger campus and community in the divestment discussion. Everyone on Goshen’s campus and members of the surrounding community were invited to eat, discuss and learn more about divesting from fossil fuel companies. Global Divestment Day is a day devoted to education about fossil fuels and how they affect our global climate. On this day, people and institutions are encouraged to divest their...

Service Club partners with local Habitat for Humanity
An overwhelming amount of compassion and giving sparked the collaboration of Goshen College’s service club with Habitat for Humanity this past Saturday. Habitat for Humanity, which provides homes for people in need, recently developed a need for more space at their ReStore, a donation center that sells new and gently used furniture, home accessories, building materials and appliances at a lower than retail price. “They were [finding that they needed] to turn away large donations, because their building wasn’t large enough, which is really bad for an organization like that,” said Brianne Brenneman, sophomore president of Service Club at Goshen...

Students Connect Via Art
From weekly meetings to field trips, art club is grabbing the student body’s interest quickly. Art Club meets every Wednesday evening at 9pm on the top floor of the art building. The club is led by Ida Short, a senior; Dona Park, a sophomore; Ardys Woodward; a sophomore; David Jantz, a sophomore; and Maddie Gerig, a sophomore. “So far this year we have held weekly meetings that revolve around a craft activity,” Short said. The club traveled to Grand Rapids, Mich. to see ArtPrize, a national art competition showcasing contemporary artists. Short said that the art has a popular voting...

Black Student Union Hosting More Events
Goshen College is known for its many student-led groups on campus, and this year, there is one in particular that’s standing out: the Black Student Union. With its lack of attendance and support last year, Tyra Carver, a junior, is determined to make significant changes to BSU. “Last year there were events, but they weren’t advertised well,” Carver said. “People just didn’t show up. So that was our main focus this year. We made it our goal to bring not just African American students, but all students to all of our events as well.” Carver is the president of the...

Behind the Bars: SRC Visits County Inmates
Every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, male volunteers from GC’s campus Social Reform Club (SRC) visit the Elkhart County Jail to help incarcerated male minors work toward their GED. They tutor, laugh, and simply enjoy each other’s company. Every other Saturday, the women of the SRC visit the smaller female section of the jail to push around carts of books from the jail library, make small talk with the women there, and brighten up their days. “It’s a very humanizing experience,” said Andrea Moya, a leader of the SRC. In the summer of 2012, the SRC took root; they wanted to...

Enactus club rolls with service
The Goshen College business club Enactus is stepping into their second year of activity and focusing on local community. “We focus on the local community because at first it seemed more simple and realistic,” said Corine Alvarez, a senior accounting major. “We had connection with the business, so it is easier to build trust than with some other companies from somewhere else.” Goshen College Enactus’s current project is helping with Meals on Wheels, a national organization that distributes hot meals to homebound individuals in local communities. Its branch in Goshen is based at The Window, a local non-profit homeless shelter....

New clubs to bring tails, justice, quiet to campus
This fall, Goshen College adds to its cultural diversity with the formation of 5 new student clubs: the GC Pet Club, Rock Climbing Club, Salsa Club, Social Reform and the Introvert Club. A group of GC students were fed up with living in a society where one's ambition and leadership ability are assumed to be linked to sociability and extroversion, so they decided to do something about it by forming a club for introverts. The introvert club will compliment large-scale events with smaller, quieter and more intimate options for introverts. The group has a number of ideas for for these...

Swim club offers opportunity for all levels of expertise
A new club is making waves this year, inviting all students to come to the Recreation-Fitness Center to swim for exercise, fun and maybe even become better swimmers. Although the swim club’s membership is small, club leaders Kolton Nay and Elizabeth Bryant, both first-years, hope to gain interest from all levels of swimmers. “There are usually about 10 people at each practice,” Nay said. “Most of them swam in high school and wish to continue to get exercise and just enjoy the sport they love along with others who want to do the same.” “However,” Nay added, “there is a...

Kansans celebrate their home state
If you were on “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire” and the million dollar question was “When is Kansas Day?” would you be able to answer correctly? Perhaps not. Kansas Day is Jan. 29, the day in 1861 when Kansas joined the United States. There are a select few students on campus who would win the million, and those students are part of the newly formed Kansas Club. Kansas Club was created by seniors Ben Baumgartner and Daniel Penner, both natives of the Sunflower State. Penner and Baumgartner began the club mainly for the purpose of celebrating Kansas Day, and...

Sons of Liberty club offers space for minority views
A yellow piece of cloth and a red poster don’t usually say much about a person, but in the case of Ryan Troyer and Garrett Cannizzo, they certainly do. On the wall of the men’s apartment living room hangs a yellow Revolutionary War flag with a snake in the middle and a line of text underneath which reads “Don’t tread on me.” Across from the yellow flag is a TV, on which the film “For the Love of the Game” plays, and a huge red poster from Rawlings—a sports equipment company that specializes in baseball gear. Although they might...

Jugglers unite on campus in new club
If you notice students juggling outside the Union or inside a classroom in Newcomer Center, don’t assume they are training for circus performances; they are Goshen College’s very own juggling club. The club, an idea from 10 year old Simon Graber–Miller, son of professor of Bible, religion and philosophy, was made possible by professional juggler LaMar Yoder. Yoder had the idea to start the club at the college in hopes of finding more people who wanted to learn how to juggle. The club meets every Tuesday for about an hour, and while LaMar can’t be involved every time since he...

German Club connects students with like heritage, interests
Goshen College no longer has a German major, but it has a German club. New German students on campus brought a fresh idea to the Goshen College community: establishing a German Club. Leah Moreno, a senior from Texas, is the student leader of this club; Paul Keim is the head professor. “I was asked to be faculty sponsor of the German Club by a former student,” Keim said. “Since we lost our German courses we have been looking for ways to promote German language and culture on campus.” Moreno noticed many students on campus talking about creating a German club...
