Hippo Campus around the globe
The four-man indie-pop band Hippo Campus performed at Ignition Garage this past Thursday, with several Goshen College students in attendance. “It was the first time the crowd was singing along to the songs,” said Maria Bischoff, a GC senior who works for Ignition Garage. “It was an awesome concert to be at. The band was really legit and the crowd loved their energy.” The energy didn’t stop with the band. The students and community in attendance were thrilled to see Hippo Campus, whether it was their first time hearing the band or they knew them well. “The concert was probably...

Among them are a number of recent Goshen College graduates, including Caleb Longenecker and Nina Fox. Longenecker started work this year in the Goshen College Admissions department, while Fox teaches at Bethany Christian High School. Gerig to teach for Goshen’s new youth arts organization
This fall, junior art major Maddie Gerig will step behind the pottery wheel not only as a student, but also as a teacher for an Intro to Ceramics course for Goshen Youth Arts. The eight-week class begins October 7 and is open for students ages 11 to 19. Although this will be Gerig’s first time teaching an art class, she gained valuable experience teaching young students one-on-one last year. “That’s what got me into [teaching]—giving one- on-one lessons and really enjoying that,” said Gerig. Goshen Youth Arts is a non- profit organization that provides after school, weekend and summer art...

Sticking with it – GC graduates teach locally for the new year
As another school year begins, a number of recent Goshen College graduates are finding themselves in their first year of teaching at various schools in and around Goshen. Becky Snider and Brody Thomas are just two of nearly ten first-year, Goshen-grad teachers that chose to stick close to Goshen. For both Snider and Thomas, the reason was simple: the Goshen community. During their time as students at GC they became connected with a community that offered them support. After graduation, they were not ready to give that up by moving away. And for first-year teachers, to already know and feel...

Give, and it will be given to you: anonymous individual leaves $1 bills
About one week ago, The Goshen News reported that an anonymous individual has begun leaving envelopes containing $1 bills around downtown. Over 20 envelopes were left in locations such as outside of Olympia Candy Kitchen, Goshen’s hand-dipped chocolate store, and The Window, a local food pantry. The envelopes contain not only money, but also a message reading, “THIS IS FOR YOU! If you need the money, keep it. If somebody needs it more than you, add $1 and pass it on!” This is followed by a quote from Luke 6:38: “Give and it will be given to you” as well...

Five things to do in Goshen over spring break
Students stuck in Goshen over midterm break may be jealous while looking at pictures of their friends having fun, tanning on a beach somewhere warm. While there is no beach in Goshen to enjoy, there are lots of other fun things to keep students entertained over break. Here are the top 5: 1) Volunteer for Habitat for Humanity: Students who will be around the week of midterm break can volunteer with Habitat for Humanity to help put up walls and construct a shed for a Goshen family. Winter’s run to the Farmer’s Market
Last Saturday, I was rudely awakened by my alarm at the unholy hour of Before Nine in the Morning because I planned on making an expedition to the Farmer’s Market for the first time this semester. I tend to wage war on sleep deprivation (bane of the college student!) on Saturdays, and I am not one to wake easily or soon. So if I am out of bed before noon, rest assured that whatever I find myself doing is going to be worthwhile (or at least interesting.) It was a picture-perfect sort of morning, with a conspicuous lack of nasty gray...

Downtown thrift store to teach calligraphy lessons
Urban Gypsy & Co., a vintage and handmade goods store, will be offering calligraphy classes to the community. Calligraphy means “beautiful writing.” It is a unique form of art and according to Beller, “It will be a lot of fun” for Goshen to learn. The store is on East Lincoln Street, located next to the Soapy Gnome and Venturi’s, and features 45 handmade vintage dealers from the local area. Urban Gypsy & Co. sells mostly “upcycled” goods, such as handmade furniture, baby items and home decor. The store opened on the first Friday of June 2014. It is open to...

From teaching to soap making
Gnomes are hardworking caretakers of the earth. The sustaining nature of these mythical creatures is the theme of The Soapy Gnome home goods store, which opened this past June. Owned by Jenny Frech, the company uses the wisdom of the gnomes to create soaps and body care products that are kind to skin and to nature. The Soapy Gnome opened last summer in downtown Goshen, but Frech had been ‘playing’ with soap making since January of 2013. “It started as a hobby,” Frech commented. “[But] the ingredients are pretty expensive, so to play with it the way I wanted...

Community Displayed In Film
The Good of Goshen project, a compilation of videos and stories documenting the lives of the people and businesses of Goshen, began in June. The project is the result of a combined effort between Goshen College, the City of Goshen, Goshen Chamber of Commerce and Goshen Community Schools. FiveCore Media at Goshen College was subcontracted by Eyedart Creative Studios to film the short videos. According to Kyle Hufford, general manager of FiveCore Media, the purpose of the videos and stories are to strengthen the image of the Goshen community by examining the good things Goshen has to offer. These videos...

What you can do during May term
Not going out of the country for May term? Fear not: there’s plenty of culture and entertainment to be had right here in good old Goshen. May term is a great time to get out and experience classic Goshen hotspots and special events. Here’s a guide to some cool things to do in Goshen this May term. 1. Get some ice cream at the Chief. Goshen’s premiere ice cream location opens up for the season on April 21. It’s some of the smoothest, most flavorful ice cream around, with some of the nicest people serving it. 2. Go see a...

Soaring Over Goshen: A Look at the Goshen Municipal Airport
Just four and a half miles from downtown Goshen—a nine-minute drive from the Goshen College campus—lies a 6,000-foot sod airstrip, where 68 aircraft reside, including seven private company jets. As I drove up to the main terminal, a small yellow Arrow-Trek aircraft flew overhead and touched down on the landing strip. The Goshen Municipal Airport is the “best well-kept secret” in Goshen, according to Randy Sharky, manager of the Goshen Air Center. Sharky, who flies about 400 hours per year in both jets and helicopters, has managed the Air Center for 22 years. “People tend to think of a municipal...

Students Uncover Histories of Local Homes
The Public History class investigates Goshen houses A new history course entitled Public History began this spring semester for ten history majors. In the past three or four years, the History Department has noticed that some students were interested in museum work and archiving as a career. “We have students go through our history program and then two or three years later, they write back to us and tell us that they decided to go back to school for museum science or historical preservation,” said Jan Shetler, professor of history. In response, the department designed a few classes around the...

Professor Engages Local Latino Community
Nearly every third person in Goshen identifies as Hispanic or Latino, according to a 2012 census estimate. Among elected city positions, however, Goshen has never counted a single Latino representative. The disparity between the city’s elected representatives and its Latino population, according to Gilberto Perez, associate professor of social work, is more than an issue of electing a Latino representative. Last year, Perez was appointed to the Goshen Plan Commission, a committee that promotes orderly property development. He said it comes down to an issue of Hispanic involvement in the community. Perez believes that candidates are elected based on how...
