GC’s annual Trebelfest Concert
On Tuesday, Nov. 4, Sauder Concert Hall had multiple local high school choirs come together for Goshen College’s annual Treblefest Concert. Each choir sang two to three songs where the concert then concluded with two combined pieces. There were 150 high school students in total; around half of the students had never been in Sauder Concert Hall. GC’s Voices of the Earth choir, conducted by H. Roz Woll, associate professor of music, sang “Ajde Jano,” “Ndandihleli” and “Organize, Agitate, Educate!” The mass pieces were “Courage” and “Plena.” “Ajde Jano” and “Plena” are both pieces about dance and the joy of...

Songs with purpose at fall choral concert
The fall choral concert made audience members chuckle and ended in a standing ovation this year. The repertoire included a mix of classical and contemporary arrangements, and even alluded to current social and political challenges. H. Roz Woll, Voices of the Earth choir director, said her final repertoire often “speaks to some aspect of human life.” The concert opened with Vox Profundi singing “The Music of Living.” Their second song, “My Spirit Looks to God Alone,” was arranged by Derrick Fox, a composer of Michigan State. Scott Hochstetler, choral director for Vox Profundi gave the piece a brief introduction: “There...

Vox Profundi: Brotherhood on the road
Vox Profundi, Goshen College’s low voice choir, wrapped up their weeklong tour over spring break with a home concert in Sauder Concert Hall on March 2. They began with their first performance in Sarasota, Fl. after a 23 hour bus ride, and worked their way up the coast — performing in Georgia and Ohio before returning to Indiana. The theme for this year’s tour was “Let All the World in Every Corner Sing,” which was also the title of their opening piece by Ralph Vaughn Williams. Additionally, the program included two spirituals, a traditional Irish piece, a song in Spanish,...

Voices of the Earth: a singer’s recap
Each year, the music department takes a choir on tour during spring break. This year, Voices of the Earth had the opportunity to go to cities like Chicago, Detroit and Cleveland as well as some smaller towns in Ohio. We left bright and early on Feb. 24. We loaded the bus after checking in with the one and only Marcia Yost. The bus was filled with energy and excitement, despite it being 6 a.m. We spent the whole first day in Detroit, and instead of starting our tour with performances, we got to visit two amazing museums: the Charles H....

Queen Singers share identity: ‘That girl.’
The feminine experience is something that cannot be summed up in words, or confined to general concepts. The feminine experience is a human life lived, in all its different cultures, contexts and colors: an identity that is made by the individual who lives it. This is a subject that the Queen Singers of Goshen College, a group made up of BIPOC women singers, have discussed. How do they want to convey the feminine experience? It may be through songs of empowerment like Alicia Keys’ “Girl is Fire,” or through songs about heartbreak and vulnerability like Yebba’s “Evergreen.” In these interview...

Music, together
For three afternoons a week, for an hour and a half (and two hours on Mondays), I forget about everything else going on in my life and walk into the Music Center, pull out my black folder, and start my vocal warmups. I’ve sung in GC’s low voice choir, Vox Profundi, every year of my college career. Now, over my time at this school, I’ve been a part of a good number of clubs, groups and extracurriculars. Don’t get me wrong: I love, love, love my work with The Record; I talk constantly about how much joy I get from...

Choirs sing for peace
The Goshen College choirs gathered in Sauder Concert Hall to put on the Winter Choral Concert last Saturday. The evening began with selections from the low voice choir, Vox Profundi, under the direction of Scott Hochstetler. They began with “Pacem,” which is Latin for peace, moved into an a cappella version of “Fix You” by Coldplay, and ended with a comical piece called “Lambscapes” which includes renditions of “Mary Had a Little Lamb” with influences from Gregorian Chant, Handel, Schubert and Verdi. Jocsan Barahona Rosales, a junior musical theater major and soloist in “Lambscapes” and “Fix You” talked about how...

‘Music is a social art’
H. Roz Woll has been an assistant professor of music at Goshen College for three years. Some of her duties include giving private voice lessons, directing Voices of the Earth, teaching a Music and Social Change class, and being faculty adviser for the Queen Singers. Her involvement at GC has revolved around voice and performance, with an emphasis on social justice and change. Woll grew up in Chicago in Hyde Park, a diverse neighborhood which made her “more conscious of race than … a white person who grows up in a more typically … white town,” she said. “I’m a...

Choirs perform at ASHE
On Saturday, the Goshen College choirs performed in South Bend, alongside UZIMA! Drum and Dance Company and nine additional choirs at the Debartolo Center. The event was called ASHE: A Celebration of Voices, and also featured the Pokagon Band Ribbon Town dancers and over 40 individuals from the Michiana area, coming together in a tribute and celebration to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. A solo portion was performed by Bongiwe Ncube, a senior biology major at GC and member of Voices of the Earth. “I think that this was a rich experience for our choirs because we all got to...

Goshen College’s Vox Profundi and Voices of the Earth choirs joined the Elkhart County Symphony Orchestra and the Camerata Singers to perform Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 on Sunday, Nov. 20th in Sauder Concert Hall. The symphony was directed by Dr. Soo Han. 800 people were present to watch the performance, and over 100 people viewed the livestream. Under his direction, each ensemble worked toward perfection. The orchestra is celebrating its “75th Diamond Jubilee,” with this season of...

GC choirs return to maskless singing after two years
It is a new season for the Goshen College choirs, and with that comes a mask-optional year. While it is up to the individual to decide if they will wear a mask during choir rehearsals this semester, the option of going unmasked is opening up new doors for the choral department. There is excitement for a new year, new events and new choral members joining, but, most of all there is a general boost in confidence. “It is night and day,” said Dr. Scott Hochstetler, professor of music and the director of Chamber Choir and Vox Profundi, in regards to...
