Red Cross annual blood drive successful
Every two seconds, someone in the United States needs blood, according to the American Red Cross. On Tuesday, January 14, Goshen College students, faculty and staff spent part of their day participating in a Blood Drive held in the Fellowship Hall. The environment was calm and pleasant, with soft music playing and a table filled with snacks. Sitting near the entrance, working registration, was Jane Schneider, a long-time volunteer for the Red Cross. For Schneider, giving blood is personal. She has been volunteering with the Red Cross regularly since her retirement in 2011. In 2004, one of her sons was...

Donating plasma to make ends meet
Being broke in college isn’t new, but some students have found that donating plasma can help ease the burden of day-to-day expenses while also helping others. According to the United States Biolife Plasma services webpage, “Plasma is the pale-yellow liquid portion of your blood that can be easily replaced by the body. It consists mainly of water and proteins, which help your body control bleeding and infection.” “I first heard about it back in high school,” said McKinzi Vega, a senior. “I wanted to do it because it helps to have a little bit of pocket cash for surprise expenses.”...

Campus host blood drive
A blood drive drew students from all different parts of campus to Newcomer 19 on Jan. 26. The event was organized by Travis Grimm and Cody McCoy, who have been the campus coordinators for the Blood Drive for the last three years. They were picked by a graduated athlete to help to advocate for and coordinate the blood drive. Their supervisor, Mara Miller, usually seeks athletes to help coordinate as their schedules line up better with the drive and they are known figures around campus. This year they’ll be on the lookout for new advocates to fill their role in...

GC hosts blood drive
Diona Beck, first-year, was particularly excited to give blood Tuesday afternoon at the Red Cross Blood Drive. “I tried two other times, and the other two times my iron was too low,” said Beck. However, she was determined to give blood and decided to give it one more shot. She indulged specifically in iron-rich foods, and her efforts paid off. “Today it was well above the recommended number, so I was really happy about that!” The blood drive was held in Newcomer Center. While there is typically only one blood drive during fall semesters, there are usually two during the...

GC Students Donate 39 Pints of Blood
Dave Ostergren laid with a needle in his arm, casually reading a book while pumping blood from his veins to a medical pouch. Ostergren donated one of the 39 pints of blood at last Friday's blood drive. Ostergren, director of Graduate Programs in Environmental Education at Merry Lea, said his reason for giving blood stems from his son's car wreck on last year's Groundhog Day. Though his son didn't need any blood at the time, he said that being in that situation reminded him of the need to donate blood. Compared to previous blood drives, this year's operation in particular...

Blood drive receives modest turnout
January 27 marked Goshen College’s most recent blood drive. Sixty-six individuals arrived at the Union building to donate their time and blood. Though some were naturally deferred due to illness or other medical reasons, 52 useful units of blood were collected and transported to a Red Cross center. One of the student-athletes who organized the event was Kelsey Morris, a junior. Regarding the student turnout, she said, “The past drive was pretty low in numbers and we can always use more students donating blood.” Students considering donating in the future can mark Friday, March 30 on their calendars. The location...

Students will pump at upcoming Blood Drive
Each school year Goshen College holds blood drives along with all other schools in the MCC conference. Each individual school picks two athletes to represent them, who organize the two blood drives in a given school year. This year the MCC has decided to add a third blood drive to its schedule. Nate Manning of the Men’s Basketball team and Kelsey Morris of the Women’s Softball team were chosen to be the Goshen College representatives and have been for the last two years. They have each received a scholarship from the American Red Cross for their efforts in organizing each...

Hochstetler gives back – Blood drive set for Friday
Austin Hochstetler’s life was saved this July, due in part to Indiana’s blood and plasma donors. Now, Hochstetler is asking the Goshen community to join him in giving back. Tomorrow from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., in the GC Union Gym, the American Red Cross will hold a blood drive in honor of Hochstetler. In mid-July, Hochstetler began experiencing severe abdominal pains and was admitted into Goshen General Hospital. Doctors hesitantly diagnosed him with a rare blood disease (TTP-HUS) that was attacking Hochstetler’s liver and kidneys. After transferring to St. Joe’s Medical Center in Mishawaka (Ind.), Hochstetler began his journey...

Save lives on Friday at annual blood drive
The American Red Cross wants your blood. And you'll have the chance to give it to them during a blood drive on Friday, March 6, from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Union gym. Sign-ups to give blood are already underway and will continue the rest of the week outside the cafeteria. "There is constant need for blood," said Meghan Hoover, a senior and community volunteer service assistant for campus ministries. "We have it; others need it. It takes only a small fraction of the day to give. You get to hang out with friends and lie around in...
