Crossing Over: Athletics prepare for season change
The close of winter sports brings with it the beginning of competition for spring teams. Along with that change of disciplines comes a phenomenon known as “crossover season,” in which multiple sports seasons overlap and increase the workloads of media, sports-information personnel, administrators, coaches and superfans alike. One group of people bears have an especially heavy yoke during crossover season: the players. At GC in particular, basketball season has backed up into the traditional late-October end of volleyball; on the other end, baseball and softball ordinarily start in February before Indiana’s state pastime concludes. While Goshen has had at least...

Math for indoor marathoners: 1 lap down, 203 to go
70 runners will participate in the fifth annual Maple Leaf Indoor Marathon this weekend, at least half of them running back-to-back races. The marathon on Saturday begins at 8 a.m., and the one on Sunday at 7 a.m. The 26.2-mile race consists of 204 laps around the newly refurbished track inside the Recreation-Fitness Center at Goshen College. “It’s the middle of winter, so the idea of being able to run a marathon inside is appealing,” said Doug Yoder, the race director and coach for the Goshen College track and cross-country teams. Of the 70 entrants, 53 are from outside the...

Too much of a good thing
Multiple Internet sources reported this week that the University of North Carolina may be on the verge of joining the Big Ten. Twenty-five years ago, UNC was 450 miles away from the nearest Big Ten school. In the last 10 years, the Crossroads League has expanded by 25 percent; both new schools are at least 100 miles from their nearest conference opponent. In college athletics, it’s clear that more is better. Why don’t we expand that to college sports’ biggest moneymaker: the NCAA basketball tournament? The three college sports governing bodies boast more than 1,600 four-year members between them, so...

Friendly competition
For the past month, I’ve had the privilege of watching thrilling basketball finishes in the Gingerich Center – often more than one on the same night. That’s not a reference to GC’s basketball programs, although as anyone who saw the men play Mount Vernon can attest, the Leafs are more than capable of close games. I’m referring instead to the intramural program that graces Goshen’s hardwood floor four nights a week, where King James can hold a lead instead of flaming out in the fourth quarter. In the “A” League, Steve Case grabs rebounds while triple-teamed and the Goshen Ballage...

Rooting for laundry
College is one of the few places we can set aside grade-school proverbs. “Don’t judge a book by its cover,” I’ve heard for years. But in college athletics–indeed, athletics in general–the team is used as a cover to separate one side from the other. Only in sports is it acceptable to dislike someone solely because their shirt says “Bethel” or “Huntington.” In life, the science of classifying based on exterior appearances spawns task forces and political correctness. In sports, it’s an opportunity to bond with people like yourself. For two significant reasons, the faithful Maple Leaf fans have an opportunity...

‘Tis better to have played and lost than never to have played at all
I love losing. To be clear, that’s not a reference to any team — believe me, as a Cubs fan, I’ve had more than enough experience associating athletic ineptitude with a group of players. And I certainly can’t stand being part of a losing team, because that’s just no fun. The key to understanding losses is realizing that they account for half of all game outcomes (soccer and its penchant for draws notwithstanding). So everybody is going to lose — in the major leagues, at least 60 games a year. But it’s not that you lose that counts — it’s...
