Art seminar takes a new form
It is not unusual for Goshen College to have mandatory uppperclass seminars for its major programs. While they all have their separate end goals for their specific areas of study, the art department has been focusing on students’ futures after graduation. Many of the focuses on the class itself are largely related to applying for internships, jobs, grad school and even art galleries. This fall, Sara Method, associate professor of art department chair, and Tiffany Wyse-Fisher, assistant professor of art, are co-teaching the art senior seminar class. Method observed other seminars in different programs and noticed integrating both junior and...

Wyse-Fisher brings Jewelry back to GC
After eight years in retirement, a jewelry class will once again be offered as an elective this May with the help of Tiffany Wyse-Fisher, assistant professor of art. Jewelry began at Goshen College when Marvin Bartell, a professor emeritus of art, joined GC in the 1970s. Bartell first taught the jewelry-making class before leading courses in ceramics and art education. Judy Wenig-Horswell, an associate professor of art from 1973-2009, took over the class when she began her tenure. “She was my jewelry professor,” Wyse-Fisher said, “I took every jewelry class I could under her. She was fantastic.” After Wenig retired...

Passion and Pottery with Dick Lehman
If you learn how to learn you can do anything.” These were the introductory words by Dick Lehman, ceramics Goshen College alumni, as he began a conversation based on the learning process as an artist who is driven by passion and experimentation. Lehman got his start in pottery as a student at GC learning how to throw from a fellow alumni, Bob Smoker who is now a part of the Northern Indiana Clay Alliance with Lehman. “We both harbored dreams of becoming potters,” Lehman said. As his curiosity in ceramics grew he had begun taking classes as an elective during...

House of Spirits
The painting I made is based on the song “House of Spirits” by The Veils. It is one I discovered over a year ago that has continuously stuck with me since. There’s so much imagery that I attempted to apply in my art piece in order to give life to the song. Even though I’ve never fully enjoyed abstract art, creating this painting opened my eyes to a different outlet that doesn’t particularly need to be “perfect.” I hope that comes across to others as it does for me.

Picture, Me
For this piece, I was assigned to create a self portrait, something I typically steer clear from as an artist. It was quite challenging as I wasn’t used to staring at myself for long periods of time and I felt uncomfortable. I had to produce a reflection of me that people would stare at and critique for themselves. “Picture, Me” was an opportunity to know myself better and let other people picture me the way I do.

Training Nature
This piece’s grey tones represent the busyness of life in America. Everyone is in a rush to commute to work in grey cities and blocky offices. American lifestyle is basically draining the color out of nature, and our environment is becoming less healthy by the day. The windows show the liveliness that nature has to offer; when looking out from them, you can feel a fresh breath of pure air and realize how much our daily routines and busy lives are slowly but rapidly taking that freshness away. The name “Training Nature” demonstrates how humanity has been forcing out...

Creativity shines at Geek Off
For the fourth year in a row, the Good Library hosted its annual Geek Off event. The competition celebrates students’ passions, offering a platform to showcase everything ranging from cosplay and fanfiction to board game designs and digital art. The 2025 competition took place Feb.14 and brought students together through a shared enthusiasm for geek culture. The idea stemmed from Kelsey McLane, promotions and accessibility librarian, who participated in a Geek Off contest when she worked as a teen librarian in Denver, Colorado. “When I got to Goshen College, I knew we could, and should, do something similar. We...

Carving, inking, printmaking
Have you ever wondered about printmaking? Or about what that word even means? Well, at Goshen College we have a printmaking professional walking among us. Her name is Sara Method, assistant professor of art and chair of the department, and on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 1-2:50 p.m., she teaches a 3-credit arts class about, you guessed it, printmaking. Printmaking 1 is a class that follows a curriculum entailing “a variety of techniques following what I learned as a student in undergrad and grad school, what I have developed in my experience of teaching and in my own practice as...

Step away and create
During a time where technology giants like Mark Zuckerberg, Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk are front row of the inauguration, it’s important to disconnect from short-form content and to engage with art. On Jan. 19, TikTok was temporarily banned from the United States over speculation that government officials from China were collecting data to influence American users’ opinions by escalating or suppressing certain content. When the ban went into effect, every American user got a pop-up message explaining that TikTok was banned in the U.S., but the last part of the message made me scoff: “We are fortunate that President...

Carson Kreitzer, an award-winning playwright, hosted Goshen College’s Umble Master Class in Speech and Theater on Tuesday evening, drawing a crowd of students, staff and community members alike. Kreitzer earned a bachelor’s in theater and literature from Yale University and a master of fine arts from the Michener Center for Writers at the University of Texas at Austin. A playwright for over 20 years, her plays have garnered recognition and been produced internationally. One of Kreitzer’s newest works, “Lempicka,” is a musical she co-wrote and lyricized alongside...

Ancient goddesses, feminine energy
Last Sunday, on Jan. 12, the Goshen College Hershberger Art Gallery presented an opening reception for the exhibit “Aspects of the Feminine” by Laurie Rousseau, a local artist from South Bend, Indiana. The artist talked about her previous work and what led her to create “Aspects of the Feminine,” then followed her talk with questions from the public, which was partially made up of students from different art classes. Sara Method, assistant professor of art and chair of the art department said, “One of our big goals with our art gallery is to show a variety of artwork from a...

An artist’s wonderland: The GC art collection
When you enter the side door of the Union building and walk toward the campus post office, you pass a door that almost blends into the wall — not wanting to attract attention. With a faculty key, the door opens and you ascend two flights of stairs. Through another door, you enter a mysterious space. Imagine a giant storage room filled with history and creativity — an art gallery tucked away far off of the beaten path. This is the home for Goshen College’s art collection, which consists of more than 200 unique pieces. Since she started teaching at GC...

Flying away: Krabill to retire
After 22 years, the longtime interdisciplinary and arts professor Merrill Krabill announced his retirement from Goshen College effective May 2024. Krabill ’79 started his employment in September 2001 and has been a professor of art since being promoted to the department chair in 2009. When asked about what he was most proud of in his time at Goshen, Krabill responded with no hesitation. “In the end, it’s all about people,” he said, “both as … a person and a parent and a teacher. When my kids do well … that’s the thing that … makes it feel worthwhile.” Krabill’s office...

Sara Method joins GC art department
Sara Method, the new art professor at Goshen College, got the first of her three degrees “at a small liberal arts college [sic] not unlike this one.” She has practiced and studied art throughout her life, growing up in Virginia before moving to North Carolina. “As a kid […] I would always ask people what I should draw on those long road trips we took as family […] and I stuck with it!” Method said, reflecting on what led to her becoming an art instructor. She has an extensive background in studio art and art history, having studied at Salem...

GC choirs return to maskless singing after two years
It is a new season for the Goshen College choirs, and with that comes a mask-optional year. While it is up to the individual to decide if they will wear a mask during choir rehearsals this semester, the option of going unmasked is opening up new doors for the choral department. There is excitement for a new year, new events and new choral members joining, but, most of all there is a general boost in confidence. “It is night and day,” said Dr. Scott Hochstetler, professor of music and the director of Chamber Choir and Vox Profundi, in regards to...
