Award winners ‘Buck’ and ‘Walter’ navigate life together again
Being a Buckwalter means loving coffee, being passionate about teaching and driving a car from Buckwalter Motors. Or so it would seem after getting to know Renee and Anne Buckwalter, twin seniors from Wellman, Iowa. Recently, another similarity has appeared: Renee and Anne are both being honored by the Indiana Association of Colleges of Teacher Education with the Outstanding Future Educator Award. Renee, the younger twin by 31 minutes, is an elementary education major who student taught kindergarten at West Goshen Elementary School. This semester she is spending around 18 hours a week there in a special education classroom. Anne,...

Career Networks event promotes value of summer internships
Though summer seems like a lifetime away, David Kendall suggests that students start searching for their summer internships now. That’s why Kendall, coordinator of the Career Networks Office, hosted an event on Tuesday evening with enFocus to equip students with the tools they need to search, find and obtain a “worthwhile professional experience,” said Kendall. EnFocus, an organization located in South Bend and soon Elkhart, works with college students and recent graduates to help impact communities within the area. Each summer, enFocus hires 15 interns and then finds several government-owned entities and private organizations within the Saint Joseph and Elkhart...

Moving Forward by Stepping Back
To be blunt, taking a semester off halfway through your undergraduate degree is weird. Between second and third year is where things are supposed to really get difficult. But instead of focusing on my junior project like so many of my classmates were, I went home. My two years at college had been spent jumping from purpose to purpose, major to major. I didn’t have time to think about whether I would stay interested in my latest major, so I didn’t. It was easier to keep changing majors and chasing the high that comes with thinking that this time I...

Meqbil solidifies passion for biochemistry during summer research fellowship
Yazan Meqbil spent more than 500 hours in a laboratory this summer. While that might sound unappealing to most, Meqbil says it was one of the most informative experiences of his life thus far. Meqbil, a senior Goshen College student majoring in molecular biology and biochemistry, worked as a research fellow at Purdue University’s College of Pharmacy — a position that is typically only available to Purdue students. From 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., five days a week, for 10 weeks, Meqbil hunkered down in a lab and studied the N-terminal methylation of 24 s.cerevisiae (baker’s yeast) substrates through investigating...

Academic Success center cuts out middleman in new web update
The subject matter may be challenging, but the path to tutors is now more accessible to Goshen College students. In years past, students who wanted help with chemistry, math or writing would send a request in writing to the Academic Success Center (ASC) and wait for a tutor. This semester, the center is introducing an electronic sign-up sheet that allows students to take initiative in making appointments. The new sign-up method allows students to schedule tutoring sessions directly on the ASC web page. The page uses Google Calendar, so students and tutors will have the added convenience of the appointment...

History students travel to Mennonite conferences
Recently, two groups of Goshen College history students and faculty attended Mennonite history conferences held at Bethel College in North Newton, Kansas and Eastern Mennonite University (EMU) in Harrisonburg, Virginia. The conferences provoked conversation about two important issues: Mennonite involvement in the Holocaust and the past and future of Mennonite higher education. Katie Yoder and Miguel Rodriguez, junior history majors, accompanied Dr. Jan Bender Shetler, professor of history to North Newton for the conference titled “Mennonites and the Holocaust.” This was the first conference ever to address the history of Mennonite complicity and participation in the violence of Nazi Germany...
