Gilberto Pérez Jr., dean of students, is currently on medical leave after his recent open-heart surgery. He plans to return after fully recovering, but is unsure of when that will be.
Pérez Jr. said that he learned of a heart murmur he had about 25 years ago, and recent testing revealed that he would need surgery due to his heart overworking. “The open-heart aortic valve surgery has solved this problem, and I am looking forward to a full recovery,” Pérez Jr. said. He added his gratitude for the prayers and messages for recovery that he has recently received.Pérez Jr. also expressed his admiration for the healthcare workers involved throughout the process, including several former Goshen College nursing students. “GC’s nursing faculty and their dedication to compassionate care and excellent nursing teaching is being offered daily in Elkhart County through our nursing alumni,” Pérez Jr. said.
Student leaders were informed of Pérez Jr.’s upcoming absence via email on Feb. 20. The email assured students that the Student Life team will continue to support students’ needs and thanked the student leaders for their effort in building community and creating engagement.
Chandler Buchfeller, associate dean of students, said that the directors of Student Life would be taking on Pérez Jr.’s critical roles throughout his leave. This team of directors includes Buchfeller; Patty Hartshorn, director of health and wellness; Jen Shenk, campus pastor; and Kris RappAfoose, director of campus safety. Both Buchfeller and Pérez Jr. were confident in their ability to function in Pérez Jr.’s absence. Buchfeller said that the team was well-prepared for Pérez Jr.’s leave and noted that students should not expect shifts on campus.
“During this medical leave, I am taking time to read more about student development, journal and take walks to regain my strength,” Perez Jr. said. He also urged students to exercise, stay healthy and seek help when it is needed. “One’s health is the most important thing we have.”
