Rebecca Haarer ’75, a Goshen College alumni art major, has been collecting and documenting Amish quilts since her days walking the campus.
Haarer, originally from Shipshewana, had a developing affinity for the Amish community, which progressed when the national recognition of Amish quilts began in 1971 after an exhibit in the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City. This affection for Amish quilts grew her collection, while she was also accumulating other domestic artworks. These pieces have not been displayed to the public since the year 1995.
The artifacts collected by Haarer will be exhibited in the Harold and Wilma Good Library gallery from March 8 to Oct. 8. GC will hold a public reception on Sunday at 2 p.m. The display is sponsored by the Mennonite-Amish Exhibit Committee.
