Cougars too much for Maple Leafs
The Goshen College women’s volleyball team started off hot, but quickly became overmatched en route to a three set 25-23, 25-10, 25-17 loss to Mount Vernon Nazarene this past Friday evening in Crossroads League action at Ariel Arena in Mount Vernon, Ohio. The Leafs were on attack early as they jumped to an 11-7 lead in the opening set. The tide quickly turned against the Leafs, however, as the Cougars went on a 5-0 run and never surrendered the lead the rest of the set. The second and third sets proved to be much of the same as the NAIA...

In a three-set sweep of the visiting Pilots, the GC volleyball team earned a “W” when they hosted Bethel College last Friday night. When there’s a fork in the road, take it: Jim Routhier
“Hey, girl! What’s happening?” I pushed the door to Jim “JR” Routhier’s office the rest of the way open. He was hard at work on his computer, finalizing the Goshen College volleyball team match schedule for the upcoming season. I took a quick survey of his office full of preseason trip souvenirs. The five-foot flip flop from Jacksonville, Fla, still hung on the back wall of his office. The faint memory of JR wearing the flip-flop like a backpack during our shopping night by the beach still brings a smile to my face. The 10-gallon hat from Denver, and a...

For the love of the game: fighting through major sports injuries
A jump. A fall. A pop. That’s how easy it is to tear your ACL. According to ESPN, there are between 250,000 and 300,000 ACL injuries per year. Katy Anspach, a senior volleyball player and sports management major at Goshen College, contributed to that statistic not once, but twice. While on the volleyball preseason trip to Ann Arbor, Michigan, in the summer of 2013, Anspach experienced her first injury. “I remember it like it was yesterday,” said Anspach, who was a sophomore at the time. “It was the second set of the first game that we were playing,” she said. ...

Volleyball wins on Prof Night
The Goshen College volleyball team defeated the University of Saint Francis on Wednesday, October 21 in their longest match of the season, with some of the players’ most influential professors present to cheer them on. The Leafs defeated the Cougars for the second time this season in five sets (22-25, 26-24, 35-37, 25-15, 15-5). For GCVB’s second annual Prof Night, most players on the team honored one or two of their professors at the start of the match. Head coach Jim Routhier announced all of the professors in attendance, their department, and which volleyball players invited them. The student athletes...

Goshen Volleyball earned a conference win last Saturday after a hard-fought battle against Grace College. The Leafs won on their home court in four sets (25-21, 24-26, 25-17, 25-19). The home team took the lead against Grace at 8-7 in the first set and never looked back. The Leafs stayed ahead as Whitney Peterson, a first-year, racked up four kills in set one alone. Numerous unforced errors by Goshen provided Grace with the momentum they needed in game two, with a two-point victory in the second set leaving both teams hungry for a win. Goshen’s well-balanced attack and stellar defense...

With a perfect 4-0 record for the weekend, the Leafs defeated Lawrence Technological University, Siena Heights University, Rochester College and Concordia University. Freshman outside hitter Whitney Peterson greatly enjoyed her first tournament at the collegiate level. We learned a lot from that weekend and grew as a team. Our new trophy...

Mackowiak Reaches 1,900 Digs
Senior libero Missy Mackowiak set a new program digs record at the opening game of the season at Grace College’s Wyndham Classic on August 22. Mackowiak entered the season just 17 digs short of Anna Herdeck’s GC best, 1,867. Then, during the game against Indiana University East, she became the all-time digs leader. As a varsity starter, she wanted to break the record for digs at Goshen College, and become the all-time leader in GC history. She said “I was pushing hard to break it. I knew I was close, but I didn’t know how many more I needed.” She...

Wyse digs for Goshen
Stacy Wyse, a senior, recently became the second volleyball player in Goshen College history to record at least 3,000 assists and 1,000 digs. Since her freshman year in 2010, Wyse has made 3,597 assists and 1,023 digs. The only other player who set this record was 2003 graduate Kristi Miller. Wyse, who is from Archbold, Ohio, said she is honored because many people do not get the opportunity to play college sports. “To leave a mark in Goshen history books is a great accomplishment for me,” said Wyse. “I could have not done so without my wonderful teammates to push...

After making history, Leafs repeat it
History, the axiom says, repeats itself. For this, the Maple Leaf volleyball team could not be happier. Four weeks ago, on Wednesday, Oct. 10, Goshen made history: they defeated Taylor for the first time since 1991 and snapped a 38-match losing streak to the Trojans. Tuesday night, the Leafs traveled to Odle Arena in Upland, Ind., to take on Taylor once more. Since the match marked the opening of the single-elimination Crossroads League tournament, one team’s season was about to end. It was Taylor’s. After dropping the first set 25-12, the Leafs hit .344 in the second stanza to level...
