Track and Field Defiance results
This weekend, the Track and Field team sent all members but its racewalkers to Defiance, Ohio, home of the Yellow Jackets, to compete in the Defiance College Winter Open event. The DC Winter Open took place on Friday. The Maple Leaf racewalkers, on the other hand, competed in Goshen’s own Maple Leaf Indoor Race Walk on Saturday. Friday in Defiance, senior Jordan Smeltzer continued his successful season with a first-place finish in the 3,000 meter run with a time of 9:11.62. Another record falls at Anderson
Hannah Barg, junior, rounds out a turn in her race at the Anderson Raven Invite. The Goshen College track and field teams had another important performance Saturday afternoon at the Raven Indoor Invitational hosted by Anderson University. The Maple Leafs had a national qualifier and several top-three finishes. With this national qualifier, the Maple Leafs will have six runners in the NAIA national meet, which will be held in Geneva, OH in less than a month. Track team sets new records
The Goshen College track and field team had a strong performance at the Don and Riley Zimmer Indoor Classic. The event was located at Angola, Ind. and hosted by Trine University. This event gave Goshen College some good news as a school record fell and a Maple Leaf athlete won her event in her second career race. At Trine, senior Mollie Nebel set a new school record after taking the third place overall with 1:01.81 in the 400-meter dash. Track opens season
Over the weekend, our beloved track and field team opened its season in Findlay, Ohio, participating in the Findlay Classic. Since this was the first meet of the year, it was hard to know what to expect from the athletes going into the event. As the 2013 indoor track season reaches its end, the Maple Leafs seem to be peaking at the right time. This was evident Friday in the Goshen College race walk, as the hosts swept the top two spots on both sides of the gender divide. Jake GunderKline, a senior, and Mitchell Brickson, a sophomore, finished first and second respectively, with GunderKline posting a season best of 13:39.1. Track and field has big day in tune-up for conference championships
With the Mid-Central College Conference (MCC) track and field championship only two weeks away, the Maple Leafs headed to Manchester College on Saturday to compete in the Spartan Classic. The Leafs were one of seven MCC squads present, and looked to make an impression leading up to the championships. Webster highlights Leafs’ big day
Matt Webster, a junior, broke two of his own school records Saturday as the Maple Leafs traveled to St. Joseph’s College for the Puma Invitational. The junior’s hammer throw of 189 feet was eight more than his previous record from earlier this season and his discus throw of 162 feet and 2 inches was also a new school record. Both were good enough for first place in the events. Webster rounded out his day with a fifth place showing in the shot put. Track and field teams begin outdoor seasons
The Goshen College men’s and women’s track and field opened their outdoor season on Saturday, March 19 at the Dick Small Invitational hosted by Defiance College. Goshen, led by Matthew Webster, a junior, recorded five event wins and 18 finishes in the top five. Webster already held four Goshen College throwing records going into the meet. Webster added to this tally with a record-setting toss of 180 feet, 10 inches in the hammer throw. This hurl overtook the former Goshen College record set last year, by Webster, by over a foot. Track and Field Boasts an All American and Two School Records
On Friday, Mar 11, the Goshen College Maple Leafs sent three participants to the NAIA Indoor Track and Field National Championship at the GaREAT Sports Complex in Geneva, Ohio. Erin Helmuth, Jacob GunderKline and Matthew Webster were the only Maple Leafs to qualify for nationals. Webster and Witkowski Excel at Taylor Invite
The Goshen College men’s and women’s Indoor Track and Field competed alongside eight of their nine MCC rivals and more than 600 student athletes at the 7th annual Taylor Indoor Invitational on Saturday. Both junior Matthew Webster and freshman Andrew Witkowski were standouts for the Maple Leafs. Each won an event, Webster taking first in the Weight Throw and Witkowski took top honors in the 5k race. Three Maple Leafs qualify for indoor track and field nationals as season opens
The Goshen College women and men’s indoor track and field teams began their season last Friday by splitting into two partial squads and competing in a pair of different meets. In total, 18 Goshen athletes, nine at the Findlay Classic and nine at Trine University International, participated in their first competitions of the year.
