Matt Webster, a junior, broke two of his own school records Saturday as the Maple Leafs traveled to St. Joseph’s College for the Puma Invitational.

The junior’s hammer throw of 189 feet was eight more than his previous record from earlier this season and his discus throw of 162 feet and 2 inches was also a new school record. Both were good enough for first place in the events. Webster rounded out his day with a fifth place showing in the shot put.

The other Maple Leafs’ mens’ victory came in the high jump, where freshman Kyle Mishler took home first place with a jump of 6 feet, four inches. Senior teammate Kyle Laker cleared 6 feet, 2 inches, which was good enough for second place. Senior Dietrich Alderfer was the other Maple Leaf to place in the field events, garnering second place honors in the pole vault with a jump of 11 feet, 5 and ¾ inches.

On the track, the Maple Leafs’ success continued. Junior Billy Funk took second place in the 1500 meters and eighth place in the 800. Two Leafs finished in the top six in the 5000 meters as well. Freshman Andrew Witkowski placed third with a time of 16:01.84 while senior Paul Verluis took home sixth with a 16:49.79 showing.

For the day, the men finished fourth in an event that only scored the top six teams with a 73 point showing.

For the Lady Leafs, senior Cassie Grieves placed in the top 10 in three events, including fifth in discus with a throw of 117 feet, 8 inches, sixth in the hammer with a toss of 125 feet, 1 inch, and highlighted by a throw of 35 feet, 4 ½ inches in the shot put, good for third place. Fellow senior Krista Nussbaum finished in the top ten twice, both in shot put and hammer throw.

Back on the track, Alita Yoder, a sophomore, and Jessica Corbett, a first-year, finished sixth and eighth in the 5,000 meters. Fellow first-year Dana Christner also took eighth place in the 400 meters, finishing with a time of 1:07.27.

Overall, the Lady Leafs finished the day with ten points, good enough for fifth place.

The Maple Leafs track and field squad next event will be held this weekend, April 8 and 9, at Indiana Wesleyan University for the Little State Championships.
