Flying away: Krabill to retire
After 22 years, the longtime interdisciplinary and arts professor Merrill Krabill announced his retirement from Goshen College effective May 2024. Krabill ’79 started his employment in September 2001 and has been a professor of art since being promoted to the department chair in 2009. When asked about what he was most proud of in his time at Goshen, Krabill responded with no hesitation. “In the end, it’s all about people,” he said, “both as … a person and a parent and a teacher. When my kids do well … that’s the thing that … makes it feel worthwhile.” Krabill’s office...

Goshen College to say ‘goodbye’ to longest serving employee
There’s not much that Glenn Gilbert can’t do. In June, the jack-of-all-trades will add one more thing to his decorated resume: retirement. Following his 35th year at Goshen College, Gilbert will retire as the longest serving employee currently on GC’s campus. In 1985, Gilbert started as an electronics technician, working in a small room in the science building. On the side, Gilbert was also the chief engineer for the WGCS radio station. Later, he transitioned into computer maintenance for the six PCs on campus at the time, he says. Gilbert eventually moved into the physical plant shortly after as utilities...

Nursing and Theater department chairs to retire after combined 59 years at GC
Brenda Srof of the nursing department and Doug Caskey of the theater department will retire at the end of June after both making the announcements before the start of the semester. The pair both graduated in the GC class of 1982 and have both served as chairs of their respective departments. In Strof’s 31 years at GC, she has witnessed a shift from a predominantly Mennonite campus to a more diverse one. Strof is excited about the change. “I think we have more of a stake in the community that we live in and in the region, so those are...

A Lifelong Passion for Education
During her senior year of high school, Kathryn Aschliman and her parents met with I.E. Burkhardt and Leland Bachman, two representatives of Goshen College. As they sat around the Aschlimans’ dining room table, the representatives discussed the need for teachers. After the conversation, Aschliman’s parents thought it would be a good idea for her to attend college and become a teacher. She did so and began a lifelong commitment to education. Aschliman began attending Goshen College in 1948. After taking classes for two years, she began teaching first grade in Archbold, Ohio at the age of 19. She returned...

“Did you know they’re selling smoothies at Java Junction”
“Did you know they’re selling smoothies at Java Junction?!” Even after my interview with them is over, Sue Burkholder, a Greencroft resident, along with her husband, J.R. Burkholder, continue to pore over the contents of The Record with a level of engagement I rarely see from students. Sitting on a wooden shelf near the doorway of Sue and J.R.’s home are a multitude of editions of The Record going back several weeks. Each of the four Greencroft residents interviewed have connections to the college that go back decades. “I was very involved for 15 years in serving on a planning...

Clay Shetler: a good steward
There’s a photograph pinned to the north wall of Clay Shetler’s small office, one that might easily be missed among the many photos and documents taking up the space. Pictured is Shetler himself, beaming and leaning over Kenneth King and Clarence Burkholder, who are both seated. The one unifying fact about these three men, who are decades apart in age, is that they were all at one point directors of the Goshen College physical plant. Burkholder was director for 19 years, followed by King for 16 years, and finally, in 2017, Shetler will join their ranks as a retired director....

Shriner announces retirement
Shirley Shriner, longtime assistant administrator for student life, officially announced her retirement effective the end of May 2016. Tagged as the “do it all girl” by her colleagues, Shriner never sees a dull moment. A common day would consist of answering phones, processing reports or answering the array of questions from students here at Goshen College. “I certainly can’t say I was ever bored with my job,” said Shriner. “Our campus has such a creative and fun energy that has kept me enjoying my job for all these years.” Shriner is known for her laid-back and easy-to-get-along-with attitude. “She is...

Stan King’s retirement opens new position
Stan King, longtime head coach of the Goshen College men’s tennis team, recently announced his retirement at the conclusion of the 2015 season. And with King’s decision brings change. Big change. King served as the head coach for the men’s tennis team for a total of 17 seasons and amassed 106 team match wins—the second highest number of wins of any coach in the history of the athletic program behind Jim Routhier, the current volleyball coach (109). King was a 1961 graduate of Goshen College with a biology major, and competed in both #1 singles and doubles on the tennis...

Employees moving on, retiring
As the semester draws to a close, Goshen College prepares to say goodbye to a few longtime employees. Lois Martin has served for ten and a half years in the Academic Resource Center. Providing academic support for students, Martin has done a number of things, including helping students with their writing, sharing tips for time management and setting up tutoring. “I will treasure the opportunities I had to work with outstanding students and colleagues,” said Martin. “My work was...

Beloved athletic trainer to retire
Linda Kaminskis, the head athletic trainer at Goshen College, and a member of the Indiana Athletic Trainers Association Hall of Fame, will retire at the end of the 2016 spring sports season. Kaminskis, also known as K, reflected on her time at Goshen. “This is my 11th year at Goshen College, but it only seems like two or three [years],” Kaminskis said. “It has gone by very quickly.” Kaminskis, who has spent 34 years in the field of sports medicine and athletic training, ended up on the career path as if by chance. “After college, I was coaching women’s basketball...

Vickie Miller to retire after 21 years
Vickie Miller, who has served Goshen College in Human Resources and ITS, will retire this week after 21 years of service. Miller finished her college degree in 1995, even while raising six-year-old twins, and wanted to go into the Information and Technology field. After seeing an ad for a help desk coordinator position at GC in that same year, she made a phone call, got an interview, and landed the job. Despite a 40 percent pay-cut, Miller took the risk and came to work for Goshen College. “I can say, almost 21 years later, I made the right decision,” Miller...

Anita Stalter retires as dean
Anita Stalter, Academic Dean at Goshen College since 2001, will be retiring at the end of this school year. Stalter has been at GC for nearly 27 years, serving as a professor and a department chair before her time as academic dean. Stalter came to Goshen College in 1987, and during her first two years she spent half of her time in the teacher education department. The rest of her time was spent starting a school for patients at Oaklawn Psychiatric Center in Goshen. “I knew I would miss teaching,” said Stalter, “but I liked the administrative work, especially working...
