Worship night returns this semester
Continuing on from the success of last semester, worship night returned this Sunday, the 28th of January. The night offered a place for students at Goshen College to come together and worship through singing, as well as time to break off to either pray for oneself, others or journal. “It’s a really good time to connect with God and also to support other people who are there,” Kelsey Winters, the organizer of the event, said. “It’s not just focus on yourself all the time.” Winters, a sophomore from Upland, Indiana, is a ministry leader this year at GC. She first...

Prayer Odyssey begins this week
Prayer: an earnest appeal for assistance or expression of thanks spoken to God or an object of worship. Odyssey: a sequence of experiences that give knowledge and deeper understanding to someone. Prayer Odyssey: seeking out a deeper meaning and understanding of yourself, your surroundings and the people around you through the “expression of thanks to God or an object of worship.” The Prayer Odyssey was started in the fall of 2010 by then-senior Casey Diener, who was part of a prayer movement called the International House of Prayer, which held sessions of worship 24 hours a day, 7 days a...

Convocation to focus on meditation practices
It's easy to define prayer in narrow ways when put in the broader context of spirituality across religions. Monday's convocation will provide an opportunity to broaden one's spiritual horizons, as Sanyatha Thawalanthanne, a Buddhist monk, and Ann Hostetler, professor of English, present "Meditation Practices: Buddhist & Christian Perspectives." The convocation will explore the purpose and value of meditation, which has arisen from the Buddhist tradition, in the context of our society. Senior Ross Weaver, who will introduce the chapel speakers, met Thawalanthanne at a meditation course in which they were both participating over the summer in Illinois. Both Weaver and...

Students engage in prayer, 24/7
The prayer room in the basement of the Coffman small-group housing building is being flooded with non-stop prayer this week as students partake in a campus wide 24/7 prayer movement. The campus’ movement has been going since Sunday and will continue until Sunday, Oct. 31. 24/7 prayer – referencing the 24 hours a day within the seven-day week – is a crusade for encounters with God through peace, worship and creativity inspired by a desire to find God through nonstop communion with him. One of the hopes of the 24/7 prayer movement is to give students a specific time...

Coffee, Cushions and Christianity
Coffee or tea with your Bible study? Or how about a cushion to sit on? Coffee, meditation, and singing are but a few of the many diverse focal points of groups that reflect an increasing spirituality at Goshen College. Arienne Johnson, who has a double major in History and Bible, religion and philosophy, co-hosts an informal prayer and reflection time at Aurora House with Andrea Kraybill, a senior Art major. The atmosphere is informal and friendly, and the focus is on prayer, collectively experiencing God, and the inherent communal draw of tea and coffee. The approach now is “organically balancing...
