GC in reach of becoming Hispanic Serving Institution
Goshen College is within 5 percent and approximately two years of reaching its goal of being a Hispanic-Serving Institution. This week, President Barack Obama declared Sept. 12 through Sept. 18 National Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) Week. Goshen College is an emerging HSI, with this year’s Hispanic student population reaching 20 percent of all full-time undergraduate students. A Hispanic-Serving Institution is an institute of higher education that has an enrollment of full-time undergraduates with at least 25 percent Hispanic students. According to NBC News, there are 435 qualified HSIs in the U.S. and 310 “emerging HSIs,” whose Hispanic population is between 15...

GC builds relationships with Hispanic population
Nearly 30 percent of this fall’s incoming class identifies as Hispanic. As a college that prioritizes intercultural learning, Goshen College has been working hard to develop its identity as a Hispanic-serving institution. According to Richard Aguirre, director of corporate and foundation relations, notes that “despite their population growth, Latinos lag behind all other racial and ethnic groups in the percentage of students enrolled in college.” Aguirre adds that lack of financial resources is one of the primary reasons for this fact. According to President James Brenneman, Goshen College has worked towards becoming an institution that better serves Hispanic populations by...

HSI to create ‘positive cultural shift’
Goshen College is slowly and steadily building up to becoming a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI). The designation will make GC able to apply for federal funding that could increase resources for intercultural development. Without the HSI status, GC cannot apply for that specific funding. President Jim Brenneman said, “We have been building the infrastructure and the potential capacity that opens the doors for this kind of growth. We must incrementally keep building the systems.” GC was the first Indiana college to attend the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) six years ago. Rebecca Hernandez, associate dean for intercultural development...

Goshen College Path to Becoming a Hispanic Serving Institution
According to HACU.net, to become an HSI, Goshen College needs 25 percent of the student body to be Latino or Hispanic. This qualifies the college to apply for certain funds that help improve access and support for post-secondary education within the Hispanic population. Dr. Rebecca Hernandez, associate dean for intercultural development and educational partnerships, said, “This is a benefit for all of our students. The world has come to our door. So why not take advantage of the kinds of learning we can do together and grow to meet that really wonderful core value of global citizenship?” Lilly Endowment, Inc....

Enrollment Application Numbers Rise for Coming Year
Looking to the academic year of 2014-2015, Goshen College is hoping for a larger incoming class, more transfers and enrollment that may lead to becoming a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI). For the past several years, enrollment at Goshen College has been stagnant and goals to increase enrollment have not been met. However, James Townsend, Vice President for Enrollment and Marketing, reported that as of January 9, there was a 16 percent rise in applications and there has been a 12 percent rise in the amount of admitted students compared to last year. With these numbers, the admissions department is heading...
