Hogan makes history
Last week, Goshen College received national recognition thanks to the performance of Drew Hogan, a senior business major, at the Twilight Invitational hosted by Indiana Wesleyan University. Hogan placed first of 304 runners, setting a course record and earning the second fastest time in program history with 24:25.7, second only to Matthew Keitany last year. He led the team to their overall placement of fifth out of 20 schools, and the men’s cross country team is currently ranked 21st in the nation. This makes them one of five ranked schools in the Crossroads League, which includes the number three and...

Cross country in a ‘golden age’
Goshen College’s men’s and women’s cross country teams are losing a total of eight seniors as the school year comes to a close. According to some, the last few years have been “the golden age.” Rustin Nyce, the director of track & field and cross country, recognized this class of runners as special. “I guess what [the golden age] means is, like, the best that it’s been, right? … going back to look at any decade in Goshen’s sports history, this last decade of track and cross would have the most nationally competitive programs and the most all Americans and...

Letter to the editor
I would like to take the time to respond to Kevin Liddell’s article in last week’s Record. My initial response is to want to minimize the negative feelings that the article may have caused other athletes, coaches and people on campus to feel. Except, what Kevin said is true. And I want the members of our team to know I support them and how they feel. It is true that the track and cross country teams consistently perform at the national level. To date, there have been 26 national championships between cross country, indoor and outdoor track. Goshen College...

Cross-country team excels in Missouri
Goshen College cross-country athletes excelled last Friday at the Gans Creek Classic, held in Columbia, Missouri. The team showed up to the meet in full force, achieving impressive times in the process. Starring for the women’s team was none other than Mercy Chebet, a senior nursing major. Chebet ran a 22:17.5 in the 6k race, placing her 30th overall out of 307 athletes. This time broke her previous 6k best — and school record — in style. Chebet said, “I was happy with my performance and I believe that there is always room for improvement.” Chebet’s achievement led her to...

Men and women race together at nationals
The cross country teams ended their 2023 season in Vancouver, Washington, at the NAIA National Championships. The women finished 15th in the nation, and the men finished 16th. This was the first time the women’s team made it to the championships, and the men’s fifth straight visit. For both teams, it was their best overall performance in school history. Mercy Chebet was named an All-American for her 34th-place finish out of 331 runners. Chebet was in 128th place at the one-mile mark of the 6K (3.73-mile) race, but moved into the top 40 — the cutoff to qualify as an...

With just one meet to go before the NAIA National Championships, the men’s and women’s cross country teams are peaking at just the right time. Last Saturday, both teams traveled to the NAIA Great Lakes Challenge meet, which took place in Grand Rapids, Michigan. With nearly 30 schools present, the Leafs rose to the challenge. The women’s team placed second out of 22 competitors and the men’s team took home fourth place out of 27 competitors. Weekly recap: Volleyball, soccer and cross-country
Two-thirds of the way through their season, the 2-19 women’s volleyball team has had to look at things other than winning percentage to keep their spirits up. “We are growing and getting better,” said Kourtney Crawford, head coach of the women’s volleyball team. “I think that the girls are working hard and it shows at moments, but they truly are putting in the effort.” The team has not recorded a win since Sept. 3, when they beat Montreat College 3-0. With just 13 games left in their season, they are looking to hit the reset button. “We’ve started to [reset]...

Weekly recap: Soccer, volleyball, and cross-country
With mere seconds to play in a scoreless first half against Madonna University last Saturday, Felipe Carli found himself with the ball just outside the center circle. A few seconds later, the ball found itself 50 yards downfield in the back of the net as the clock read 0:01. Carli’s stunner of a goal sent the Goshen College men’s soccer team into a frenzy. The energy in front of a home crowd grew even stronger as, eighteen minutes into the second half, Lucas Bontrager gave the Maple Leafs a 2-0 lead after a beautiful pass from Mathurin Allawai. It was...
