Winter sickness spreads on campus
College students are no strangers to illness, and this winter is no exception, with reported instances of COVID-19, Influenza, RSV and cold symptoms, many missed classes and even rescheduled events. This was the case for both Fatima Rhana, senior music and theater major, and Victor Vegas, senior music major, who were forced to reschedule their senior recitals. These recitals are a requirement of the music major, and thus essential to complete. Rhana said that it was a hard decision to reschedule, but a necessary one that the department was very understanding of. “The department was so fast and super understanding....

GC returns to three-day orientation
Starting next fall, Goshen College will return to a three day orientation for first-year students, paring down the full week model that started in the fall of 2021. An email went out to GC employees on Tuesday afternoon that attributes this decision to their continued effort to “decrease costs while maintaining high quality.” The transition to a full week came in response to perceived loss of learning by high school students due to the COVID-19 pandemic. While GC has seen an increase in retention from first-year students during this period, Academic Dean Ann Vendrely told The Record that the rising...

Art in isolation
After two and a half years of dodging COVID-19, I finally tested positive on Tuesday of last week. In some ways, it was great timing — we didn’t have an issue of The Record coming out, so I didn’t have to scramble to have the paper ready over Zoom. Of course, it wasn’t a big deal in the grand scheme of things (thanks to vaccines). All I had to do was lug my belongings up...

GC choirs return to maskless singing after two years
It is a new season for the Goshen College choirs, and with that comes a mask-optional year. While it is up to the individual to decide if they will wear a mask during choir rehearsals this semester, the option of going unmasked is opening up new doors for the choral department. There is excitement for a new year, new events and new choral members joining, but, most of all there is a general boost in confidence. “It is night and day,” said Dr. Scott Hochstetler, professor of music and the director of Chamber Choir and Vox Profundi, in regards to...

After the pandemic, I want to…
COVID-19 affected the lives of everyone. For many young people, that meant scrolling mindlessly through TikTok and binge-watching Netflix. It also intensified the looming uncertainty of the future. Despite the unknown, young people continue to hold onto the hope of a safe, Zoom-free world without COVID-19. Inspired by an article in the The Washington Post, we asked Goshen College students to respond to the statement, “After the pandemic, I want to….” In their own handwriting, here are their responses. Claudia Mobley, 19, was a senior in high school when the pandemic shut her world down. On Mar. 13, 2020, she...
