New café cures bad Catitude
Catitude Café, a new cat cafe in downtown Goshen, has been open for three weeks now. The cafe is the first of its kind in Elkhart County. Brenda Summers ’93, Catitude Café owner, said, “I really want people to come in here and just be able to feel. If they need quiet, if they need space, there is ample [room]. It is a calm and relaxing environment.” Summers wants people to find comfort in the lounge. She said it is okay to just go in there and only pet cats for a bit. She wanted to make the...

Best on-air personality, Kadie Daye
Kadie Daye, Goshen College alumna from the class of 2021, has been a “radio geek” since she was eight years old. She remembers sitting in the car with her mom, listening to various radio stations and passionately mimicking them. “I would do the jingles alongside the hosts, and every time they went to music, I would actually switch to the next station just to hear them talk some more,” she said. This early fascination with radio sparked her passion, which has only grown over the years. Daye, a former broadcasting and marketing double major, left a “secured legacy” at GC,...

Oldest, and arguably smartest, GC friend group
The morning sun shines through the windows onto the Kratz 1 lounge. One by one, five men — each donning either blue jeans or khakis, long sleeve button ups or polos with crewnecks, and some with a thermos in hand — maneuver chairs around to form a circle. A table sits in the center where a yellow National Geographic magazine lays folded open. The conversation starter is one that Vic Stoltzfus, former president of Goshen College and father of the current President, Becky Stoltzfus, reads off. “[Frank Lloyd] Wright’s behaviors line up with a more deeply entrenched mental health diagnosis:...

Letter to the editor
Letter to the editor Goshen College has made a very poor decision. The inauguration of an official Goshen College beer aka Broken Shield over Homecoming Weekend sends conflicting messages to the student body and campus community as a whole. I have no problem with alcohol at GC alumni functions, but naming a beer as the official drink of GC is essentially giving the students on campus the college’s blessing to make alcohol a part of their college experience. Yes, students party, and that will always be the case. Some would say that’s part of the college experience. But we forget...

Alumni return for scrimmages
On Saturday, Oct. 5, a host of past Goshen College athletes found themselves once again playing on home soil, taking part in the alumni matches that were a part of the Homecoming weekend activities. The baseball, softball and women’s basketball teams got together to take part in relaxed scrimmages against their coaches, former GC athletes and teammates. During the baseball match, Coach Brad Stoltzfus said, “Anytime you get a chance to come out on the field and actually play, it’s super fun.” While Stoltzfus enjoyed the opportunity to get out on the field and play against his team, he also...

Record reunion considers legacy and future
The Record has been under the management of students at Goshen College for 112 years. Over the course of that time, The Record has enjoyed contributions from thousands of students and many faculty members. The newspaper has also been led by faculty advisors each year. This homecoming weekend, current Record advisor Anna Groff organized an event that saw the return of 26 Record executive editors from eight decades. Each editor, as well as previous advisors, was given the chance to share a little bit about what The Record has meant to them. One of the first points brought up that...

GC goes public with campaign
On Friday, Oct. 4, Goshen College announced the public phase of their “Connected Cause” campaign after raising $60 million of $68 million during the first three years, making it the largest campaign in GC history, according to a spokesperson for the college. “Connected Cause is rooted in the mission and values that have guided Goshen College for more than 130 years,” President Becky Stoltzfus said in a press release. “It is designed to support thriving students, integrating academic excellence with real-world learning and active love for God and neighbor.” The quiet phase of the campaign began in June of 2021...

GBCo. and GC create homecoming beer
For the first time in Goshen College’s 130 year history, alcohol will officially be served at a GC-sponsored event in which the entire campus community is invited. The event in question is Connectapalooza, GC’s homecoming celebration at the Goshen Theater. President Rebecca Stoltzfus said via email to students and employees on Sept. 25 “In designing this event, we have prioritized celebration of our local community, hospitality that is inviting to a wide variety of people, and our commitment to healthy and clear boundaries around alcohol use.” Goshen Brewing Company, founded by Jesse Sensenig ’01 and Amanda Sensenig ’03, crafted the...

Homecoming preview: What’s happening
Hundreds of Goshen College graduates are expected to return to campus for homecoming weekend at the start of October, including members of the class of 1964, celebrating their 50th anniversary, and former Record editors, who will tour the Center for Communication Studies. More than 40 events are to take place for alumni, current students and families to enjoy. Activities include alumni awards, homecoming convocation, a theater production, soccer games, food trucks, the music gala and more. “I’m looking forward to the homecoming explore day because my parents and family can come visit the campus and I like to show them...

Graber joins faculty
Ben Graber is a new adjunct professor of Spanish this semester at Goshen College. The position opened when Cristobal Garza filled the role of SST leader in this semester’s Ecuador unit, and with the opening, Graber is taking over the Spanish 101 course. Graber graduated from GC in 2008 with a degree in Spanish education. In his time at GC, he went to the Dominican Republic on SST for further Spanish immersion and spent a semester in Ecuador with Brethren Colleges Abroad for his major. “I was excited about doing something different like this,” Graber said. “I’ve been a homemaker...

Alumni recognized during Homecoming
Five alumni were presented with awards for their commitment to “Culture for Service” and the core values of the college on Friday, Oct. 7. The annual awards were initiated to honor GC graduates who have made lifelong contributions to their communities, churches, colleges, or the world. “These awards are a way for us to recognize and honor our alumni who have lived our core values through their lives and their careers,” said Dan Koop Liechty, director of alumni engagement. There are three tracks in which recipients are nominated: The Culture for Service, The Young Alumni Servant, and The Champion of...

Alumni come home, rekindle relationships
Goshen College alumni returned to campus last weekend for Homecoming, celebrating their class reunions and catching up with old friends. It was a full weekend, with over 45 possible events on the official Homecoming schedule. Dan Koop Liechty, director of alumni engagement and international student advisor, said that “planning started intensifying in March … so that we can send out a paper brochure and registration form by July 1.” The main goals of the weekend, said Koop Liechty, are to facilitate “meaningful and fun experiences” that connect alumni “to each other and the college.” He thought the goals were achieved...

Girl Named Tom Q&A
The band Girl Named Tom won The Voice competition last December. Four months later, they reflect on the experience and share what comes next. Did you explain your Mennonite roots to other contestants on The Voice? Josh: You have to explain the Mennonite roots. People are very intrigued in us since we are a trio — it’s just different. We luckily have a number of things that make us strange: siblings, the homeschool thing and Mennonite thing, and then people associate that with Amish. It’s a great conversation to have with people, we love it every time. Proud of...

GC grad’s dream becomes reality at DreamWorks
Many children have goals that seem impossible or hard to reach, but what happens when those dreams come true? Dianna Campos, who graduated from Goshen College last year, can answer that question. In December 2021, Campos announced she would be working as an Animation Production Intern for DreamWorks starting in Janunary, and that she was “over the moon” to begin her work. Campos is working on an unannounced project in the production process. “I am currently five weeks into my internship, and I honestly cannot believe how much I’ve been learning!” she said. Campos explained how her dream came to...

Girl Named Tom makes it to final 8 on ‘The Voice’
The band Girl Named Tom continued their run on The Voice Tuesday, advancing to the final eight. The sibling trio — made up of two Goshen College alumni, Josh and Caleb Liechty, and their sister, Bekah Liechty — has recently seen their fan base skyrocket on a national scale. Goshen College has become a microcosm of the craze, as many people in the Goshen community have become fans in the past few months. Announcements in the Communicator advertise The Voice watch parties: “Good snacks provided!” Girl Named Tom stickers adorn water bottles and laptops. Girl Named Tom-branded shirts and crewnecks...
