As artificial intelligence becomes more popular, it also becomes an important discussion in education. As a future elementary school teacher, I have mixed feelings about its use in classrooms. While I know that AI has some benefits, I worry about the impact it may have on young students if it’s not used carefully.

Personally, I do not think elementary-aged students should have unrestricted access to AI. At that stage of development, children are learning how to think, solve problems and work through challenges on their own. These are skills that take time and practice to develop. If students become dependent on AI to answer questions or complete assignments, they may not learn how to think for themselves. I also think computer use in general should be limited to specific purposes for younger students.

I think teachers should also be cautious when using AI. Although it can be helpful, I don’t think it should replace a teacher’s knowledge, creativity or critical thinking. Teachers should be able to create lessons and explain concepts without relying on AI to do the work for them. If teachers use AI too frequently, students may wonder why they aren’t allowed to use it in the same way.

At the same time, I think there is a role for AI in education. It can be useful for helping teachers adjust their activities so they are also helpful for students who are struggling. When used carefully, AI can help meet different learning needs without replacing the teacher’s role.

Overall, I believe AI should be used as a support tool, not a substitute for learning. In elementary education, helping students become independent thinkers should always come first.
