Four members of Student Senate met on Monday evening, one of their biweekly formal meetings, in the Mark Community Room in Westlawn.
The meeting was opened with comments from the floor — Emma Gingerich, a senior history major, voiced concerns about the lack of convocation credit for Monologues, a misunderstanding between box office and seniors about commencement tickets and the state of the leadership hub.I’m a student leader with [Prevention Intervention Network],” Gingerich said. “We used to have our meetings there, and it was a really good space, but with the Westlawn construction, the dining hall staff took it over, and since then, my understanding is that it just hasn’t been used for anything.”
Student Senate President Javier Reyes noted plans in the next few years to move the commuter lounge to that space, but said that he did not know what the status of the space was currently and that the senate would check with the events office to see if it could be used until the transition.
In the senate’s agenda, they brought up the desire for additional meetings to supplement their biweekly schedule. An initial proposal from Reyes was shorter, more casual meetings in the Mark Community Room later in the week, or during different times of day. Carmen Merino, vice president, brought up an earlier idea of having casual times to meet with representatives in Java, which garnered support from the rest of the senate.
“I think we should make a poster that says ‘Catch up with your representatives,’” Merino said, “You know, something like ‘Come talk to me, bring up any questions that you have.’”
Plans were made to discuss the busiest times with Java so that meetings could be scheduled.
Student Senate sat in on a meeting with Brian Mast, head of facilities; Chandler Buchfeller, director of residence life and housing; Jordan Blank, resident director; and residents of Kulp 3 to discuss a mouse problem in the residence hall.
According to Maille Goodwill, senate treasurer, residents have been reporting the issue for a while and “feel like they haven’t seen anyone doing anything about it.”
Goodwill went on to say that the residents in the meeting were “continuously voicing that they felt very uncared for.” Additionally, Goodwill said that though she didn’t take sides, “there were several times where there was a lot of dismissal towards the students.”
Student Senate will meet again publicly on March 24, at 6 p.m. in the Mark Community Room in Westlawn.
