Owning your identity
A Hispanic-Serving Institution has to have at least 25% of its full-time undergraduate students identify as Hispanic for consecutive years. In athletics, though, only 16.3% of student-athletes identify themselves as Hispanic, according to Justin DeWeese, assistant athletic director of communications. Women’s soccer starts conference play
The women’s soccer team started the season with a perfect 5-0 start, their best since 1997. Following the undefeated start, they lost two and tied two games and had a record of 5-2-2 before entering conference play. In their opening conference game, the women traveled to Huntington University where they lost 2-0. Both goals for Huntington were scored within a span of 62 seconds. Excellence rewarded
Goshen College held the annual LEAFYs Awards this past Sunday, honoring the athletic and academic achievements of student-athletes throughout the 2022-23 seasons. The emcee for the event was Vince Turner, a former sports journalist for the Elkhart Truth and a broadcaster for 13 years who covered play-by-play for both local high school teams and Notre Dame events. Tennis adjusts to injuries, new coach
Men’s and women’s tennis are trusting in their early season improvements and new coaching adjustments to set themselves up for conference play. Last year the men’s and women’s tennis teams finished their seasons 7-6 and 4-9 respectively and have set bigger goals this season. The men’s team had a tough start against two conference powerhouses, losing to Grace College and Huntington University, teams who finished first and second respectively in last season’s conference standings. First win for men’s soccer
The Goshen College men’s soccer team recorded their first win of the season last Wednesday, moving to 1-6-1 on the year. The Leafs outscored Concordia University 3-1 with goals from Mathurin Allawai, Tim Wilkening and Tebello Ntene. Allawai, a senior, scored his second goal this season during the 16th minute of the game. Tim Wilkening, a junior, scored the second goal in the 75th minute, with an assist by Eli Simones, a sophomore. Soccer starts the year perfect
Last year, the Goshen College women’s soccer team ended with a record of 5-12-1. This year, the team hoped to take steps in the right direction. And indeed, they have had an impressive start to their season: the Leafs are currently 5-0, their best start to a season since 1997. Volleyball digs deep
The Goshen College women’s volleyball team is off to an explosive start this season. After their first nine games, they have a record of 6-3 — a stark comparison to the first nine games last year, in which they had a 1-8 record. Cross country takes on Division I
The men’s and women’s cross country teams began their season on Sept. 1 at the Winrow-Valparaiso Open in Valparaiso. The meet was made up of NCAA Division I schools and fellow NAIA team Grace College. GC men’s and women’s teams were nationally ranked in the preseason polls. The men are ranked No. 13 and the women are ranked No. 24. The top performer for the men was junior Mathew Keitany, who placed sixth. Three years ago, The Record began an annual tradition of honoring the best of Goshen College’s athletic department. Volleyball ends with a win
On Saturday, the Goshen College men’s volleyball team closed out their season with a win against Lawrence Technological University. The Leafs defeated Lawrence Tech in a 3-1 victory. The team started off strong, taking an early lead and winning the first set 25-18. The next set was closer, as GC allowed Lawrence Tech to trail by just a few points for the entire set, but the Leafs still managed to close out the set 25-23. Track and field moves outside
Last Saturday, the men’s and women’s track and field teams traveled to Cedarville, Ohio to compete in the Yellow Jacket Collegiate Open. The Leafs’ day began early with a 5:00 a.m. departure from Goshen. The weather conditions were less than ideal for an outdoor meet, as the team faced winds of 29 mph and gusts up to 54 mph. Additionally, there was a lightning strike near Cedarville University facility that caused the meet to be delayed by an hour and a half. Tennis opens spring with victory
Last Saturday, the Goshen College men’s and women’s tennis teams started off their spring season with a win. The teams traveled to Terre Haute, Indiana where they competed against Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. The teams competed indoors, since the temperature was in the low 20s. Softball continues strong start
For the first time since 2001, the Goshen College softball team won their first four conference games. Before Tuesday’s games against Marian University, the Leafs were on a seven-game winning streak and unbeaten in conference play. The Leafs dropped two close games to the Knights, who are ranked No. 23 in the nation, but still hold a conference record of 4-2 and an overall record of 12-7. Now that Goshen College students have returned from spring break, spring sports are fully underway, with many teams reaching critical points in their seasons. Here’s a look into what they’ve accomplished so far, as well as what’s to come. The softball team is currently on a five-game win streak, after finishing up their spring break trip in Florida with three wins and two more yesterday against Bethel. The Goshen College men’s volleyball team is heading into the final stretch of the regular season. There are five games left and three of them are against nationally ranked teams. They currently have a record of 6-10 and a conference record of 4-9. The Leafs are also 5-4 when playing at home. The Leafs played two spring break games at home, one against Cornerstone University and one against Aquinas College.
