As many students on GC’s campus are painfully aware, this past Monday was Labor Day. While public schools and many colleges and universities had a day off, Goshen College classes remained in session. I don’t think it would be wrong to say that there was a general mood of dissatisfaction from the student population on Monday. And yes, while it makes a great joke to point out that we are laboring on Labor day, it’s possible that we’re missing the point. Labor Day was initially created as a federal holiday to celebrate the contributions that the labor movement and the...

Welcome back, y’all. After spending a summer at home in Harrisonburg, VA with my parents, being back here in Goshen is both exciting and somewhat nerve-wracking—I’m sure all of you can relate. Among the freshness and energy surrounding new classes, roommates and professors, I’m also lucky enough to be organizing the Record this semester. In my opinion, the Record is one of the most efficient and interesting resources on campus. Each week, students, faculty and community members can pick up an issue and get a sense of what’s happening on campus. A newspaper is first and foremost a way of...

It’s hard to believe that exactly one week separates Goshen College from the end of the spring semester, and the beginning of another May term. It’s also hard to believe that this will be the last issue of the Record printed until next fall. I’ve spent a lot of time trying to figure out what to say in this space, considering this will be my final editorial as the editor-in-chief of the paper, but how do you even begin to sum up the experience of this job? Or on a larger scale, how the campus has evolved over the course...

On Thursday, March 26, Indiana state legislation passed a bill that legalizes religious discrimination. The Religious Freedom Restoration Act is one that will allow businesses in Indiana to refuse service and employment to individuals based on their religious beliefs. While supporters of this new law claim its passing would provide business owners protection from too much government control, the ramifications of this act are extremely unclear. If this law is meant to “protect religious liberty,” then why will it overrule any existing anti-discrimination laws that are already present in Indiana cities? The lack of clarity that stems from the passing...

Although the official first day of spring has come and gone, the weekend snow has reminded us that nothing is entirely written in stone. As much as we’d like the calendar to coincide with the weather, we’re able to accept this type of unpredictability because we know that there is nothing we can do in order to change it; it’s completely out of our control. Unlike the weather, however, we are at a point in this semester where we have absolute control. Whether we’re talking about our grades, our social lives, our final exams, our summer jobs or even our...

In the dictionary, there are two definitions for the word integrity. Integrity means 1) the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles; moral uprightness, and 2) the state of being whole and undivided. While there are two separate meanings of the word, I don’t believe that these definitions are interchangeable. Both parts of this definition need to be present in order to accurately use the word. You cannot reach a state of wholeness without being an honest individual with strong moral principles. In the same way, an institution cannot successfully achieve a state of wholeness without every individual...

Goshen College is an institution that takes pride in the development of a close-knit community with a diverse population. We arrive on campus as first-year students unsure of where we will fit within the community and no matter our interests, beliefs or physical appearance; we are accepted with open arms and this place becomes a second home away from home. In our Identity, Culture and Community classes, we spend the semester trying to answer the question: how do people with diverse identities live together in a vibrant community? We study elements that have the potential to both benefit and test...

We are halfway into the spring semester of the Record. It’s hard to believe. Thinking back to when I was nervously preparing for my first issue as editor, it doesn’t feel like it’s been six weeks. More importantly, it doesn’t feel like I only have six weeks remaining. So much has changed at Goshen College over six weeks. On an academic level, Goshen has had students recognized for excelling in their disciplines. We have students receiving awards for businesses they’ve started, for participating in oratorical competitions and interning across the country. Many recent graduates have stood out for making an...

President Barack Obama, in his video address at the 57th annual Grammy awards said, “artists have a unique power to change minds and attitudes and get us thinking and talking about what matters”. Watching the Grammy awards like I do every year, I wasn’t expecting the President of the United States to make an appearance in any way. But what he had had to say about ending sexual violence and about the influence each artist has over their fans to promote change was moving and intriguing. In light of celebrating Black History month along with discussing sexual violence awareness on...

Snow has overwhelmed campus this week. Fourteen inches of snow, to be exact. Beginning on Saturday night and coasting through the entirety of Super Bowl Sunday, the amount caused all schools within the Goshen and Elkhart counties to put their learning on pause for the day. All schools except for Goshen College, that is. Firstly, I’d like to extend my appreciation and gratitude to the snow crew from the Physical Plant for working as hard as they did in order to clear all sidewalks, walkways and parking lots by Tuesday. The amount of snow didn’t make things easy for you,...

“Why do you go away? So that you can come back. So that you can see the place you came from with new eyes and extra colors.” These words of young adult author Sir Terry Pratchett seem to go well with the impact that SST experiences have on this issue of the paper, as well as on all students on campus. Although Pratchett writes about talking faeries, young witches and magical worlds, he offers his readers glimpses of the reality they face when they leave the world they know in order to explore someplace new. Many of the SST stories...

In her speech at our Monday Martin Luther King convocation, Reverend Kanyere Eaton said that every individual has the potential to achieve something extraordinary. Another point Eaton made along with this was that college is a time where we recognize our own potential. Until attending college, Dr. King had believed that all white people were the same. Until then, all of the white people he knew degraded, publicly humiliated, and offended people of color. And all of them did so without a second thought. It wasn’t until Martin Luther King attended Morehouse College and Crozer Theological Seminary that he recognized...

The arrival of a new year brings with it many things: new challenges, new successes, new faces and new memories. The New Year also brings a new semester. A new editor of the Record follows soon after. The Record is more than a seemingly recyclable paper at Goshen College—it’s transcendent. Years of smudgy ink, smiling faces and stilled photos have passed through its pages. Goshen College history, questions, dilemmas and aspirations have all found a home here. The Record moves through time with the change of a date and a story with the change of a headline. Writers come and...

For The Record
As the semester ends amidst presentations, senior shows, finals and good-byes, I realize how much The Record has missed out on writing about this semester. Although we’ve had articles that covered clubs from Black Student Union to Art Club, we haven’t covered what has really mattered to students within these clubs. Printing an article about something happening is very different than printing an article about why something is important. Goshen College is known for having students that care. What happens on this campus is intentional and the students are deliberately involved. Yet, The Record published many articles that simply announced...

There is this sense that you can’t go back to the dorms once you’ve moved into upperclassmen housing. Perhaps it’s weird to go back to the dorms, but I remember it being far more terrifying to go to upperclassmen housing. The apartments loomed overhead, the houses were so removed I forgot they existed or who lived there and Kulp was a maze I was never inclined to figure out without a guide. But it’s not just in our living situations that we aren’t connecting with underclassmen. Academically, we aren’t always the mentors we could be. There are always department meetings...
