We are halfway into the spring semester of the Record. It’s hard to believe.

Thinking back to when I was nervously preparing for my first issue as editor, it doesn’t feel like it’s been six weeks. More importantly, it doesn’t feel like I only have six weeks remaining.

So much has changed at Goshen College over six weeks. On an academic level, Goshen has had students recognized for excelling in their disciplines. We have students receiving awards for businesses they’ve started, for participating in oratorical competitions and interning across the country. Many recent graduates have stood out for making an impact on the world around them.  Whether it has been making an appearance on American Idol or serving a community in Nicaragua, the important thing to recognize here is that Goshen College students have been making a difference.

While new education programs will be added to Goshen’s already diverse degree opportunities, like the addition of the new Film Production major starting next fall, our other academic programs have been drawing attention to our small Indiana school. Our radio station, 91.1 The Globe has been nominated as a fifth year finalist in the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System (IBS) and on Tuesday, February 17, our accounting program was nationally ranked and named the third best program in Indiana behind Notre Dame and Purdue University-Calumet.

Goshen athletics have been right there with our academic programs in terms of success. In six weeks, we’ve had a new athletic director announced, and we’ve had many athletes outperform others that have come before them. We’ve had five of our race walk members of the track team qualify for the Indoor national competition within their first race, and following them, a handful of other track athletes have followed their example by breaking records of their own.

Although a lot has taken place in this first half of the semester, there are equally important decisions and events that will take place during our midterm break. The GC Board of Directors will be examining the campus hiring policy at the end of this week. The Maple Leaf baseball and softball teams will travel to warmer places to start their seasons while our men’s and women’s basketball teams gear up for the Crossroads Conference tournaments.

Even though we take a step back from our classes and enjoy a week of time off, campus activities go on. Stay tuned to hear the Board of Directors’ decision on the hiring policy, follow all of our athletic teams as they spend their week off playing the sports they love and most importantly, travel safely for all of your midterm break plans. Like classes, the Record will start back up with our next issue in March.
